What do you mean? This isn’t a parody?

Oh my god he actually responded like this. He actually said those words on the debate stage when they did the smallest amount of debunking of the racist lie he’s been running with for weeks now. He actually said this.

How is he so bad at doing this??

I didn't watch the debate so I just assumed this was a meme. Are you fucking kidding me?

This is canon???

One of the fun benefits about being picky about formatting is that sometimes I see folks in the notes who clearly never learned that italics denote the proper title of a long-form work and are confused why I'm being so vehement about Batman.

Batman, plaintext, is the name of a character.

Batman, in italics, is the title of a long-form work in which we might suppose a character named Batman probably appears.

(When the title of a work is also the name of a character who appears in said work, the formal term for this is that the character in question is the work's titular character, which is a very fun word to say. Titular.)

The one I struggle with is when to use quotes vs. italics.

  • “Poem” (quotes)
  • “Short Story” (quotes)
  • Long form work (italics)
  • “Research article” (quotes)
  • Book?? (italics??)
  • Novella? Chapter of a book? Single issue of a comic?
  • “Tweet or other online content?” (quotes?)

I usually use quotes for everything, unless I don’t want to and use plaintext. But it would be nice to have a way to remember the distinction, which is more than ‘shorter things are more likely to use quotes’.

You're not alone in your confusion.

The rule used to be italics for standalone works, quotation marks for titled portions of a longer work, or for works which would customarily be published as part of a titled collection.

So, for example, the title of an album gets italics, but the title of a song gets quotation marks, because songs are customarily published as part of titled albums; the title of a novel gets italics, but the title of a short story gets quotation marks, because short stories are customarily published as part of titled anthologies. Research articles get quotation marks because they're customarily published in titled journals. In each case, the title of the collection gets italics, and the title of the thing that goes in the collection gets quotation marks.

Then the Internet came along and fucked everything up by making it feasible to publish short-form works primarily or exclusively as standalone pieces, so that rule doesn't work anymore (except in the case of titled portions of a longer work, in which case it's still fine).

Ok, to prove to my husband that this is more a European device than a U.S. device I am going to need more non-US people to reblog this.

Do not reblog for science. No science will be happening. Reblog to help me prove a point!

(If I am right I will show him this poll. If I am wrong he will never know this happened)

I am from the U.S. and I know what it is BUT ONLY BECAUSE my wife was raised in Europe!!!

cannot recommend more putting secrets and hints in your creative work that you dont expect anyone to figure out

act like youve got a ravenous fanbase of a million people poring over every detail, cuz then if nobody figures it out you feel cool n smug knowing something nobody else does, and if someone does figure it out then its like theyve joined a secret society

this speaking as a cis person. Nothing brings me more joy seeing people find gender euphoria in becoming a mediocre representation of humanity. And I mean that so genuinely. Local boy finds joy and fulfillment wearing a cargo shorts and t-shirt combo. Local girl has transitioned to look like someone's disheveled aunt, has never been happier. Local person experiences gender euphoria rocking the world's worst bowl-cut. Without a scap of irony, this shit makes me see the wonder and whimsy in just, being a human. An average, person going through their day-to-day, is a wondrous thing? That's amazing. And heteronormativity has stripped these experiences of their joy. Like you're right, wearing a basic girlypop skirt should make my heart sing. Why not? Why are these expressions lesser because they're normal? All this to say. Shoutout to all the basic bitches out there. Yes that polo shirt does make you look like a divorced golfer dad. Yes, that too is kind of a slay, now that I think of it.

Me: I mean if I don't believe in the divine and don't keep kosher and can't read or speak Hebrew why even bother trying to convert to Judaism?

Also me: *cries when I read Jewish prayers*

Me: fine whatever I'll keep working on it.

"They are acting out for 13 years the possibility of going back to that hotel room to find again that beautiful moment of burgeoning desires and innocence. And at the same time, to feel at ease with one another, the way they were there. So, throughout the entire arc, that’s what they’re trying to do. And finally, with the rivalry at that heightened level, the triangle finally found itself sitting in the same place, but now on the court. I needed to get this very, very visually amped up and really immersed for the audience to understand how much it meant for them not to win over the other, but to be back together, all of them.
