Something I appreciate about True Detective Season 3 is the deep, emotional friendship Roland and Wayne have. It’s rare that a tv show or film portray male relationships in a way that equals that of a partnership of a romantic couple.

Yes, but also no (let me explain), that's kinda (but no, but eventually, let me explain haha) the second meaning we can see besides the first meaning that is that Rust, as a nun, is a priest thus is going to the altar to marry the Yellow King. That's why also Errol when see him says that Rust is a prist also bc he can see Carcosa and the King, and all the signs. Marty been just common men, can't see and therefore is not a prist and that's why he didn't go for the bridal path. Rust went and saw finally Carcosa and the black stars. Marty in the other hand reached Rust and save him, who represent Christ as contrary to the King. Remember his dialogue about Yeshua in the garden contemplating death and the christ paint-like moment when we see him later in the hospital in a first plane of his wounded face and then with his hospital rob as a saint like robe a la classical sculptures. Rust was at some point thought to just die and given the place he was, end been one more of the brides of the King, but his child save him and his father love, also Marty's love. The salvation of Rust was not getting married actually, in a lot of senses, including in ended been abused as part of the rituals for the brides (that we see in the whole season). Speaking of brides, remember that Maggie was hinted as a prospect bride for the king? (This was a clue given by the creators of the show via an official post where we see Maggie as part of the group of young women in a institution, as well their kids recreating crime scenes and other background details). Maggie was a miserable wife bc ended been the bride of Marty. In the show been any kind of bride is a miserable path, and is that sense, that Marty didn't went the bridal path and Rust at last minute rejected the King in the altar, was the best option for all the reasons we know. So, they ended been married in that scene? No, not really, but that's good!! See, that's why later, at the end, when Marty gives the cigarette box and Rust says if they are getting engaged. They are not exchanging ring at other altar outside seen the stars, but just getting engaged, the first step that can lead to a wedding and all that, and that is all under their terms and as the positive picture of the negatives dark fuck up picture of the King''s engagements and weddings. Or we can also see this scene as a new altar wedding, but in the present of the light stars and not the black stars, face to the world and not the evil dimension of Carcosa and the King. And Marty is dressed in his usual clothes while Rust is in white dress (aka the hospital rob) and Marty takes his bride in arms to carry her/him to their now house and honeymoon (aka Marty's house to help Rust recover) and that, let's face ir, will be Rust's house from now on also.

I feel like the True Detective fandom is still yet to properly appreciate the sick moves Rust Cohle throws down at the barn dance.
