"why are you walking six miles in the sun" thanks for asking

I've got an old special research in Pokemon Go that requires me to have TEN BEST BUDDIES which is so difficult to do already

but THEN I looked up the next several steps and it wants me to do a lucky trade which is even MORE difficult bc I don't live near my Pokemon Go friends. HOWEVER I will see some of them in October, and one of them is currently a *Lucky Friend* which means the trade is guaranteed to be a lucky trade

so basically I'm trying to maximize the number of hearts I can get with my buddies in a day in the hopes that I can get through this step and the next step before October so that the remaining pieces of this research don't have to linger FOREVER

update I've gotten through the 10 best buddies task, AND the next task which was to catch 10 Kecleon (which was SO difficult, I had to find a local Pokemon Go discord and ask people to help me find them), so now I will be able to successfully finish this task in October!

final update on this, the Pokemon I traded at the wedding ended up being a SHINY LUCKY 100% (HUNDO) DRATINI which is a big deal, I've never gotten a pokemon that special before.

Also I've been walking too much and now my doctor wants me to stop walking everywhere for two weeks, which is kind of a struggle because I do love walking and also I don't have a car, but it's only two weeks

Weird Q but how do you track your reading? Do you just keep track of how many books or do you use something? I'm thinking of using one of the websites/apps/what they are but wondered if you recomended any :)

I started using StoryGraph this year! I do also still track it by putting a sticker in the calendar section of my planner, plus a cute sticky note in the weekly section (with the title and author written on it).

StoryGraph my beloved <3

It’s an awesome book tracker and isn’t owned by Amazon like goodreads is

I like that and I like the stats

For me, I'm very good at taking in data like this or like a fitness tracker in a fairly detached "this is good to know" way, more than in a competitive way if that makes sense?

like it's been useful to notice things like "oh, my all-time stats show about 20% nonfiction, but for 2024 it's only at 10%. Maybe I've been in a slump because I haven't been reading any nonfiction and I need to bring that up for this year"

I think I'd stop using it if I felt like it was pushing me to finish books just for the sake of being able to say I'd read them

officially have read more in 2024 than I did in 2023! Really proud that I've been able to regain so much of my attention span and happy that I'm continuing to do better and get further out of the brain fog that I was in during the worst of my Hashimoto's.

also I know I keep singing her praises but T Kingfisher officially my top author of the year, and I don't think it will be possible to lose that title unless I read like 15 books by one author in the next two months

the thing is that I adore T. Kingfisher books because most of them feature aggressively practical women, but as an aggressively practical woman I also feel sooooo fucking called out sometimes

it's refreshing though because even when I figure out a mystery before the protagonists do, I'm never like "how the fuck did you not figure this out," I'm always like "that's a rational conclusion to come to considering the information available to you"

and now I'm reading one where the aggressively practical woman has a thyroid problem. this feels pointed.

some offense to people who recommend books on instagram reels but I feel like they always make books sound great, but then I actually start reading the book and I'm like "this writer does not know how to pace a book, their prose is poorly constructed, and the premise isn't really ending up as great as it sounded"

I think it's partly inherent to the format; when you only have a few seconds to make a recommendation, it'll be more attention-grabbing to just say an interesting premise than to actually review a book and make sure it's worth a recommendation.

sometimes I'm like "maybe I'm posting too many negative things" but when I posted a very simple, positive thing about how Pokemon Go is still fun, I had someone cursing at me in the notes because there are in-app purchases, so I think this is a lose/lose situation

Avatar

sometimes people are like "haha remember that summer when we were all happy and playing Pokemon Go" and like, I don't know how to tell you that the game is still going and it's actually more fun now because there's more shit to do and cooler Pokemon than just Pidgey and Rattata. I've got one that's like, a space lion with wings now. You can just start playing, it's very fun and it's a great motivator to walk more (because then you can hatch the eggs and recently, I hatched these little knight guys and they're adorable)

I feel like these underconsumption people are either 1) lying 2) not walking anywhere. They'll be like "I've had the same one pair of shoes for three years" and I'm just like girl, the structural integrity of your walking shoes wears out after 300-500 miles and sneakers generally can't be resoled, it is not a flex to wear shoes that no longer have any traction whatsoever.

we need to take the word "satire" away from instagram accounts. you're not satirical you're doing a parody, maybe a pastiche
