25 Spyro the Dragon Facts | Thursday, 12.28.2023

The 25th anniversary of Spyro the Dragon isn't over yet!

Here are 25 trivia facts within series itself down below (while also featuring Crash Bandicoot):

  • the original game was released on September 9, 1998 on the original PlayStation console in North America
  • the very first Spyro game was conceived into development following the commerical failure of Insomniac's very first game they developed: Disruptor (1996)
  • the original game in its PS1 trilogy is the only one of the three (barring the Reignited Trilogy) where Tom Kenny doesn't voice Spyro himself, but rather by Carlos Alazraqui (who's known as the voices of the title characters in Rocko's Modern Life and Camp Lazlo respectively)
  • the game was released in Japan around on April 1, 1999 (April Fool's Day, roughly seven months after the game's North American release), though it had little commerical advertisement, nor an impact itself to the Japanese community, due to the game's "3D sickness" and how the controls and camera angels weren't going smoothly to anyone during gameplay
  • as the very first major antagonist introduced, Gnasty Gnorc was referenced in almost every mainline game (even he made a few appearances in a few Crash Bandicoot games either as a playable character or a boss)
  • Spyro was voiced by Akiko Yajima (known for her works in Blood+ and Mobile Suit Gundam at the time) in the Japanese dubbing of the first two games
  • Irony: the original game was released exactly two years after the original Crash Bandicoot game (developed by Naughty Dog) came out
  • Tom Kenny (known for voicing SpongeBob Squarepants shortly before Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage came out) is Spyro's most recurring voice actor for his major voice work as the title character in (down below):

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (1999)

Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000)

Spyro: Enter the Dragon (2002)

Spyro Reignited Trilogy (2018)

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (2019)

Crash Bandicoot: On The Run! (2021)

Crash Team Rumble (2023)

  • Irony: Spyro's Japanese name ("スパイロ") was used for during the making of introducing recurring villain, Ripto for Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage during development.
  • since his introduction in Ripto's Rage, Ripto became Spyro's most persistent enemy in the following games down below (cameos excluded):

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage (1999)

Spyro 2: Season of Flame (2002)

Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (2002)

Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs (2003)

Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy/Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage (2004)

  • Up until Crash Team Rumble (as of Season 3, where she'll be playable for the very first time), Elora's only major appearance was in Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, although she makes a minor appearance in Spyro: Year of the Dragon and a cameo in Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy as a collectible trading card (although she was cut in both Spyro: Season of Ice (2001) and Spyro: Attack of the Rhynocs (2003) respectively)
  • at the time Spyro: Year of the Dragon was released, Elora was voiced by Carolyn Lawrence (known for voicing Sandy Cheeks in SpongeBob Squarepants and Cindy Vortex in Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius)
  • Coincidentally, Spyro: Year of the Dragon was released in the exact same year the actual Year of the Dragon event occured (for the Metal Dragon in Chinese zodiacs)
  • Spyro: Year of the Dragon is the only game in the original Insomniac Games trilogy on PlayStation to not release in Japan due to the first two games performing below critical and sales expectations at the time (However, it's not possible, courtesy of the 2018 release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy)
  • Coincidentally, both Spyro: Year of the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot: Warped are the highest rated games in their respective series (they both scored an average of a 91 out of 100, therefore they both received "universal acclaim")
  • Spyro: Year of the Dragon not only marks the final Spyro release on PlayStation, but as the game developed by Insomniac Games themselves since they would go on and focus their development on the Ratchet & Clank and Marvel's Spider-Man franchises exclusively on PlayStation consoles
  • despite selling well at the time of release, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly is not only the worst rated game in the entire series (second only to the Nintendo DS-exclusive, Spyro: Shadow Legacy), but it was the only game in the franchise to developed by both Check Six Studios and Equinox Digital entertainment (both developer studios dissolved shortly after the game's original release)
  • despite being planned to appear in Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly as the main antagonist of the game besides Ripto, Gnasty Gnorc never made it in the final game, although he is mentioned in-game by Ripto at the beginning of the game
  • as sibling franchises previously owned by Universal Interactive (now owned by Activision since 2008), both Spyro & Crash have crossed over in each other's games several times throughout the years, which includes:

Spyro the Dragon / Crash Bandicoot: Warped (demos; 1998)

Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage / Crash Team Racing (demos; 1999)

Spyro: Year of the Dragon / Crash Bash (demos; 2000)

Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy / Crash Bandicoot Purple: Ripto's Rampage (crossover games; 2004)

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (crossover racing game; 2019)

Crash Bandicoot: On The Run! (Season 3 crossover event: 2021)

Crash Team Rumble (multiplayer crossover game as of Season 3 and onward; 2023)

  • Coincidentally, both Spyro and Crash were not only designed by Charles Zembillas himself, but were also voiced by Jess Harnell (although he voiced Crash between 2005 and 2021, he only voiced Spyro,as well as Hunter in Spyro: A Hero's Tail in 2004)
  • the 2005 release of Spyro: Shadow Legacy (exclusively on the Nintendo DS) was the last game in the classic series to be available until Spyro returned with the 2018 release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy (excluded The Legend of Spyro and Skylanders since they're reboots of the title character and aren't considered canon)
  • as of 2023, the Spyro Reignited Trilogy sold over 10 million copies worldwide (yes, it includes Japan)
  • Spyro made a few cameos in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, where one of his cameos includes being a balloon float for the level "Off Beat" (you can also see it in the background of "Jazz Junction" in Crash Team Rumble shortly before he became playable since Season 3 started not too long ago)
  • since the 2018 release of the Spyro Reignited Trilogy, its art style has returned in both Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (also developed by Beenox) and Crash Team Rumble (also developed by Toys For Bob) respectively instead of backtracking prior character design choices as, in a way of indicating any possible future installments being released when made available (even after Microsoft owns all of Activision's IP since post-2023)
  • a McDonald's TV commerical advertisement for Crash Team Rumble (credit goes to Lex Lang, the current voice of Dr. Neo Cortex) features a small cameo of Spyro flying in the background (as well as him appearing in some of the Happy Meal toys), foreshadowing his upcoming arrival in the actual game itself (as of Season 3 and onward)

Anyway, that's Spyro 25 facts that I could put in after looking them up before the end of the year.

Happy 25th anniversary, Spyro! 🎂

Is Sonic Dream Team Canon? | Wednesday, 12.27.2023

A lot of fans have been wondering for quite some time regarding the recently released Sonic Dream Team game for the Apple Arcade service on mobile devices: is it canon?

If Sonic Dream Team is suppose to be a canon game within the series, where does it take place? Maybe before (or after) Sonic Frontiers?

Sonic Dream Team is available now on Apple Arcade.
