Dude he knows her side She's the one who dosen't care about his side And the there's another diffrence to Varian and Hiro is that Hiro had friend and FAMILY His Aunt by his side from the begging Hiro had Love support his Friends were there for him Varians so called friend Rapunzel was NOT THERE FOR HIM AT ALL SHE JUST IGNORES HIM UNTILL HE COMES TO HER WHICH WAS AWILE AND SHE GIVES UP ON HIM AFTER ALCHEMISTS RETURN I DO NOT BUY SHE OR THE OTHERS EVER GAVE A CRAP ABOUT Hi
It's not just about that broken promise
Okay I’m sorry this got really long but I felt the need to clarify so!
Varian doesn’t know Rapunzel’s side though, he doesn’t know the whole story, she didn’t bother to tell him that her parents were missing and possibly dead, that she sent out the love of her life with a chance of him never returning, that the storm was threatening to destroy her kingdom and that she had the decision of what to do about her people resting on her shoulders. He had no idea the sort of burdens she went through and exactly why she couldn’t go with him to save Quirin, and she never really tried to explain that to him after the fact either. If she did, if he actually knew what she was dealing with, then he probably would have been more understanding. Instead all he knows and thinks is that she decided he wasn’t worth her time and that she just needed to make a decision and nothing else, and that is the main reason why he became so frustrated and angry with her. Everything she tried to tell him after that just sounded like poor excuses to him and he didn’t want to hear any of it—she had her chance to tell him what was going on and she didn’t, so he shut her out completely. By the time she came back to give him a proper explanation he’d already thrown up his walls and she couldn’t penetrate them
And she does care, she does, but she is still to blame for not taking action immediately afterward.
You are right about Aunt Cass though!! She represents Hiro’s important family member after Tadashi passed away, and along with her encouragement and that of Hiro’s friends and Baymax, he was able to take a step in the right direction, come to terms with Tadashi’s death and accept it. Meanwhile Varian doesn’t have anyone to push him towards that path, and he hasn’t accepted anything about Quirin’s fate, especially that part of it is his own fault.
And no, Rapunzel did try to make it up to him and be there for him, she offered him several times a way out and support, but this was after Varian had solidified his resolve and absolutely refused to let her in because he was so afraid she’d just go and betray him again. Rapunzel’s mistake isn’t that she didn’t try to help him, she did several times—she cares about him so much—but her mistake was that she was too late in reaching him, because he’d already been enveloped by anger, fear, and the belief that she couldn’t be trusted anymore. There’s several actions she didn’t take on time or at all and that was her mistake, but she definitely can’t be blamed for not trying, because she did. She tried to reach him repeatedly, but he was too far gone at that point.
She didn’t give up on him, ever, even in the last episode she kept pleading with him to stop and think about what he was doing. But when she realized he wasn’t going to do that and that was partly due to her inaction she knew she had to take a step up and stop him even though it hurt her. Rapunzel treasures her friends deeply and I’m sure it must have been painful to willingly go to battle against someone she holds so dear to her heart, but she knew if she didn’t he’d end up destroying both himself and everyone around him. At the end of the episode she even begs her father to go easy on him, because she still cares—and he’s just a child, there’s still tons of room for forgiveness and redemption. And she isn’t the only one that feels this way, everyone does—it was just the safer option, really, to stop him with everything they had rather than try to plead with him and fail and then have him doom them all. Varian was no longer in a state of listening to people, he was way way beyond that, he went all the way and decided that to get what he wanted he had to take it for himself without any hesitation, and Rapunzel and co. realized this strong conviction and were like “Well we all fucked up big time so we have to take responsibility for that now and stop him no matter what and get him help”
They definitely give a crap about him, they give a crapton about him lol and that’s why they did what they did. That’s why they fought and that’s why they decided to send him to jail, because while it’s horrible it’s the only way for him to realize his mistakes and get him to see reason, because they already tried that before and it didn’t work so!! They went to extreme measures because they care so so so so so much.
Like? If my family member pulled that shit yes I’d send them to jail even if it hurt me and was painful, because serving time and learning that what they did was wrong is important and would help them become a better person. It’s morbid and dark to put it this way but they sent Varian to jail out of love. They’re gonna get him help and make him better, and it’s super extreme but it’s the only option they had left
So yeah both parties are to blame, they both contributed to what Varian became and there’s no way that Rapunzel didn’t try to reason with him and support him;; But yes she got the ball rolling and Varian took it and ended up driving himself into a corner he couldn’t back out of. I love them to death but hell they’re definitely both at fault here!! Silly kids
It’s not just about the broken promise, yes, it goes way way beyond that, but it was the driving force behind Varian’s downward spiral into villainy and that’s what I was trying to point out haha
