Hot take: A villain is allowed to have a sympathetic backstory and not get a redemption arc. Having sympathetic elements in their backstory does not inherently make them worthy of a redemption arc.

Villains are allowed to be both sympathetic AND too far gone to be saved. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
