the battle network anime completely baffles me to this day because it goes back and forth from being written really well to just disregarding any and all previous development and turning its own characters into nothing but anime tropes constantly

and the amount of filler episodes was unreal (and most of those filler episodes were where the shitty characterization happened lmao) like there were 200+ episodes and it’s close to no exaggeration to say about half of them are filler, and it’s not like a chunk of filler and then back to plot, they’re like semi-evenly sprinkled throughout the entire series

it’s such a weird show to sit through, just a roller coaster of changing quality and when it’s good it’s really fuckin good but when it’s bad it’s almost grueling to sit through but you do it anyway because the parts with the good writing made you care enough about these characters to put up with them suddenly being anime stereotypes for a bit lmAO

It’s like OkCupid for matching writers with editors  ♥

Need a high schooler to edit your dystopian flash fanfic?

Or a published poet to review your queer epic?

How about an English major to review the syntax in your personal essay?

On Yeah Write’s Workshoppers page, you’ll find hundreds of Tumblr users who have volunteered to peer edit other people’s writing. But what you may not have noticed is that each post is excessively tagged with everything that particular workshopper likes to read and edit. Click on a tag to see more workshoppers who, for example, like to edit screenplays, or scifi, or for characterization, or who are in college.

Dear Steven Universe Fandom,

image

As someone who has been in the Steven Universe fandom since the Pilot, I want to give my two cents about this situation that has everyone all in a tizzy.

There could be many reasons why CN has decided to pull SU reruns temporarily, and it’s not fair to jump the gun, point fingers and make wild accusations based on the previous actions of a completely different network.  Not to mention, I do believe Regular Show and Adventure Time have had their reruns pulled as well, and they are in no danger of being cancelled.

Let’s look at the facts. SU is still running premiere episodes weekly, has an ongoing comic book series, and still has a second season in the works. We haven’t even seen the entirety of season 1 yet! There has been no official word even hinting at cancellation, so there is no need to be so panicked.

All of this being said, the situation has looked much more grim in the past, and some newer fans might not know the history. Last year in the winter, premieres were sporadic and poorly advertised. This continued into the spring where premieres kept being pushed back until they were pulled from the schedule altogether and we had a SU hiatus lasting the entire summer. However this was in order to build up the stock of new episodes for a release at a later time, CN was also undergoing some changes among the higher ups at the time.

But then in August, the SU comic came out and even had a celebratory art show to go along with it! Later that month SU came back with the premiere of Coach Steven and things started to pick up once more. It was also revealed that they had been renewed for a second season and there were still plenty of first season episodes in store! Since then, the only hiatus has been the typical winter hiatus for holiday specials to air.

So to everyone running around like chickens with their heads cut off, don’t be so anxious and panicked, things have been worse and Steven is still here. That being said, it is still a good idea to show support by buying official merchandise, like the new DVD, episodes on iTunes, CN shop goods, or the comic.  And if you can’t, show your support on the web with art, tweets and the like and in general get more people interested in watching it.  There is no need to go into apocalyptic panic mode over temporary changes and widespread, fear-mongering rumors.

As always, show your support, keep calm, and believe in Steven ☆

(I probably should've posted this before anything else oops)

Alone Together used a different style than the other episodes but I thought it was still interesting! The episode raises a lot of questions (how Steven was able to fuse with Connie for one) but it was overwhelmingly just a very cute and happy episode (albeit a little strange towards the end) but my expression the entire episode was basically:

NO BUT DO YOU WANT TO HEAR MY THEORY FOR THIS SCENE

This doesn’t comply with the books, I realize, but it doesn’t exactly not comply either.

Why would Malfoy rip a page out of a random book? If he wanted the book, he could have just bought the book himself. He’s not poor, his family doesn’t discourage learning. He chooses to rip a particular page with a pointed glance out of a book. Why?

Think of what this and Dobby’s actions of warning have in common: Lucius Malfoy. The one who was apparently talking freely of the dangers that would face the Muggle borns this year. I think Draco knew more about what was going on, or at least figured more out, than he let on to his friends. Why? He was worried.

How does this connect to the ripped paper? How did Harry and Ron find out about the basilisk? How did Hermione?

A ripped piece of paper on basilisks.

Now we’re to assume that Hermione found this in a library book and promptly ripped it out to take with her.

But why would Hermione, with her love and care for books almost on par with the librarian, rip a page out of a book she could have just checked out? My guess is she didn’t find it in the library.

My guess is Draco somehow slipped her the piece of paper that he ripped out of a book before school started, detailing the monster he knew was in the Chamber.

He slipped Hermione the paper somehow, whether by leaving it on her desk or planting it in her bag. He tried to warn them, as best he could.

Animating female characters are extremely difficult. They have to go through a range of emotions, and having a film with two female characters and building distinguishing aspects was hard.

Michael Lee on animating Frozen

So that’s their (blatantly misogynistic) excuse for scrapping all but two of the female characters; that they’re too hard to animate? Those emotional female characters, they’re all the same, right? Here’s a hint: their “femaleness” isn’t what’s making them indistinguishable.

(via moopflop)

Frozen keeps getting better and better.

You morons do realize that less than ten years ago, it was considered next to IMPOSSIBLE to animate HAIR with CGI? I mean, ANY type of hair. When Pixar was making the Incredibles, they were so worried they wouldn’t be able to properly animate Violet, and went on and on about how her hair was so ridiculously hard to animate. VIOLET’S HAIR.

They had to develop and create entirely new programs to animate Rapunzel. Those programs are brand new, literally less than 4-5 years old. It takes TIME to develop new animation techniques, especially in a field of animation that is so new.

And you wonder why the protagonists of Frozen look so similar to Rapunzel. It’s because Rapunzel is their baseline. She’s their first big CGI female character (the only other CGI films Disney had done before Tangled were Treasure Planet, a animation-CGI hybrid, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, and Bolt). She’s their first major CGI project with the technology they used in Tangled and Frozen. It takes Pixar literally YEARS to create each new project that they do. And you’ll notice, that the only Pixar character to have significant amounts of hair since Violet was Merida, and they had to develop like three COMPLETELY NEW programs to animate her hair.

Basically, this stuff takes time and money to develop, and stylistically, it should not come as a surprise to anyone that Anna looks similar to Rapunzel, given that Disney often uses the same default facial structure from decade to decade (Wendy and Alice, Aurora and Anita, Ariel and Belle, etc) while their new animation style is in development.

I swear, it’s like you people have no clue how animation actually works, or how freaking ridiculously hard it actually is. Show some respect, please.

I’m going to reblog myself to add some context.

This is the article that the quote is from. The quote is unattributed.

Also included in this same article are these gems:

"Depending on the shot, it can take up to 4,000 computers and 30 hours just to complete one frame."

"Just in effects alone, it took over 50 people to make the the scene of Elsa building her ice palace during her musical number. According to the directors, it took “forever” to render."

"One of the challenges of Frozen was that the TD department had to populate the entire kingdom with people. In this case, the department ended up building 312 character rigs, 245 cloth rigs, and 63 hair rigs. It’s more rigs the department has build than any of the other Disney films.

  • To put that into perspective Anna’s character had 420,000 strands of hair; that’s 4.2 times more than a human.
  • Just in case you care keeping count, in Tangled, Rapunzel had 27,000 strands of hair.”

(remember how I said earlier that the animators talked loads about animating Rapunzel’s hair, body, and face, and how they basically created the programs they animated Tangled with from scratch? Yeah….)

"To cope with Anna and Elsa’s challenging Scandinavian hair braid style, the TD department built a new software called Tonic, which harks back to the hold barbershop days. Tonic used hair volumes and clumps, which would help build the strands and translate it into the vision. How the hair fell into place or if the character “had a bad hair day” helped the animators get an idea of how hair would work."

The TD Department approached the cloths from a real world perspective. Using a pattern based approach. The team built new software called Flourish to capture the sheer, stretch, and gravity  in a more convincing way so they can best represent silks, wools, and other clothing based materials. For example, by adding motions to a horses’ stirrups or tassels, they can dictate its behavior or the way it moves.

"The effects team were even conscious of how the wind would flow through hair and cloth. A variety of controlled simulations were done with the strength and length of the wind varying."

"Acting coaches were brought in to help animators create major and subtle character movements. So when you see Anna bite her lip, or Elsa’s diaphragm move, this is something both Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, respectively, do in real life. Basically if it made it more believable, the animators put that in.”

…have fun guys.

i hate what this site has done to this movie.

Look, I made a gif of this most awesome wizard at the Leaky Cauldron!

DUDE IS READING ‘A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME’ BY STEPHEN HAWKING

I NEVER REALIZED

are you serious

I always assumed wizards just ignored science, because the fact that “magic” exists, can explain anything. But there are MuggleBorn wizards, ones who, until they were eleven, lived in the real world and learned science and things. Did they all just abandon that normal, muggle knowledge, like Harry did? It’s always been there, itching in the back of my mind.

FOUR FOR YOU SCIENCE WIZARD

YOU GO SCIENCE WIZARD

can we point out that he’s doing wandless magic too

like voldemort couldnt even do that shit

molly fuckin weasley couldnt fuckin do that

who are you

pretty sure this whole series has been about the wrong wizard guys

Plot Twist: He is able to do wandless magic because his comprehensive understanding of quantum physics means that he is the only wizard/witch to actually understand how magic works.

Ignoring Cas’s blunt and completely hilarious sense of dry humor for a moment, think about what he’s actually saying here.  Castiel is the name given to him by God.  Castiel translates roughly to ‘my cover is God’ or ‘shield of God’ in Biblical theophory—the ‘el’ suffix means ‘God’, and ‘iel’ means ‘of God.’ Cas is the name given to him by Dean.  Deliberately or not, Dean removed the part of Cas’s name that means ‘of God’, and left him with ‘shield’.  Castiel isn’t actually a Biblical angel—it’s a variant of the name ‘Cassiel’, who was an archangel in the Kabbalah responsible for observing the Earth with no interference.  Making it up as we go, indeed.
