Warrior Merrill for a class-swap AU

I feel like Merrill and Isabela understand each other in ways other people don’t, except possibly Varric from his privilege of being a keen-eyed story-teller.

Isabela never mistook Merrill for being an innocent child, and I believe happily swaps human and Dalish sexual slang with Merrill and admires her ferocity in battle, rather than demonizing her use of blood magic. Isabela defending Merrill against Hawke and Anders and Fenris and the Keeper because who are they to know Merrill’s limits? Who are they to deny Merrill power and freedom of choice?

And Merrill sees beyond the presentation of “sexy pirate,” and values Isabela as a real, whole person. I imagine Merrill by Isabela’s side when cheerful, boastful drunk Isabela turns into Isabela who drinks to forget the horrors she’s seen, like all those enslaved elves she was supposed to deliver. Merrill comforting Isabela when she doubts her character, because what has she done to make people believe she’d be okay with the slave trade?

Isabela and Merrill are just so fucking fantastic together I can’t even deal.
