On a better note...

I really love what this season is doing for Gou so far. One of my qualms with last season is that she seemed to drop off the face of the planet after episode 5, and her role was minimized quite a bit. Although she was manager, she was more of a background character. Her role within the boys’ lives was undermined a bit in the second half.

But this season, emphasis has been placed on her place within the group and her role in the boys’ lives. Haru went to her to ask about Sousuke, Nagisa relies on her when he needs someone to back him up in his shenanigans, and Rei and her have finally come to understand one another on a deeper level.

I really, realy love that emphasis was placed on her ability this episode, too. She isn’t just there for the muscles. She’s there because she’s a damn good manager. She keeps those boys in place, keeps them motivated and task-focused, and really cares about seeing them succeed. She may not be a part of the relay directly, but she knows what it means. Not only because she’s smart, but she also has the ability to emphathize. She was moved by the relay in episode 12 even though she didn’t participate.

And as the season focuses on the future and careers, I think it’s great that Gou’s abilities are shining more than ever. She is someone who is good at her work and could do it professionally if she wanted to. She is a woman who kicks ass when it comes to sport management, a male-dominated field. She is someone a professional coach is wowed by and who the Iwatobi boys can rely on.

I want to see more of this throughout the season!
