soft anders, warm anders, little ball of extremist, happy anders, sleepy anders, blow up the chantry at worst possible time
After Leandra’s death, Hawke shut down. With the exception of the few days a week Aveline would force him to eat something, there was never a response from the mage. Merrill would leave flowers with Bodhan or Orana for him, Anders would bring buy potions and fruit so the man wouldn’t die of malnutrition or starvation. Varric and Isabela brought books and their company, trying to draw him out of the house.
Fenris had gone to him after Hawke had carried his mother’s body to the clinic in a desperate hope that Anders could do something, and that was where he crumbled.
It took Aveline and Fenris both to get Hawke back to the estate.
Aftermath of earlier perhaps???
You know what? Leaving aside party gender balance issues, DA continuity might just have been better off if Fenris and Sera switched places.
Allow me to play devil’s advocate!
Fenris in DA2:
- Has a background that is totally…
y’all will do anything to erase the only poc/poc romance in dragon age won’t you
up to and including claiming FENRIS, the slave who ran away from a magister and suffered horrific abuse at the hands of mages, has “has a background totally unrelated to anything happening in Kirkwall and makes a poor foil for Anders”
Fenris, who hails from Seheron and speaks qunlat, and translates both the language and the cultural nuances to Hawke who doesn’t know shit about qunari but is chosen to deal with the Arishok, who threatens Kirkwall
Fenris, who is befriended by Sebastian, the man whose home was blown up in the story’s climax and could have died there
Fenris, whose entire story is about freedom and the price one pays to achieve it and whose whole backstory involves the very abuses the Circle was made to prevent, abuses that Kirkwall’s templars use as scare tactics to justify their own abuses
Fenris, who has no real family to speak of except a sister who betrays him to get ahead in the system that oppressed them, and loses her like every other one of Hawke’s friends lost their family, and even Hawke themselves
this character ~isn’t a natural fit~ for DA2. lol
I also love how Vivienne’s only role in this nonsense is to play Mammy to him, that was extra classy
also pls why would Fenris go to the Inquisition in the first place? his purpose in Kirkwall is to wait for Danarius and kill him. He’s not staying in Kirkwall for Hawke?? he’s decided that this is the city where he’ll make his stand and that’s what he does. His friendship/involvement with the Kirkwall Gang is superfluous to his decision to kill Danarius.
the only role that I can imagine the Inquisition playing would be a role of protection, and Fenris has never asked for that. (the closest he comes is asking Hawke to come with him when meeting his sister, but that’s a request for personal support for a personal situation)
also, would Act I Fenris voluntarily stick with an organisation that has a Tevinter mage?? I suppose you can recruit Dorian later, but there’s still Solas, and Fenris would be super hinky about Solas and all his Fade dreaming and magic research (who’s had first had experience with magic research?? is it the guy with lyrium burned under his skin?? I think it is!) (tho Solas would really really love Fenris).
note, Fenris doesn’t actually join the Kirkwall Gang, he stays in Kirkwall and accepts requests from Hawke to assist in various ventures as repayment for Hawke being hired via Anso. Except for the method of game play/party dynamics Fenris never has to interact with a mage in Kirkwall!
worse would be if the Inquisition sided with the mages. Fenris wouldn’t align himself with that organisation?? why would he? he just wants to be free.
also. also. why is red lyrium Fenris a thing. please stop doing more shit to this horrifically abused person.
anyway I really disagree with the Sera/Fenris swap but mostly for very emotional reasons but also because the Kirkwall Gang are good for Fenris, they are the Friends He Deserves
da2 companions in the fade more like
WHAT? He doesn’t really does he?? Anders and Fenris don’t get along, but Ander’s whole deal is about FREEDOM, I don’t think he’d actually support handing Fenris over…
i had to look up a video to make sure (and i did not feel good at all about watching it tbh) but hawke can say, “if you really want him, take him” then anders will say, “i thought i was the only one thinking that”
i’m going to lie down in the corner now
Hawke: I like to give my friends each one free city-destroying terrible decision that I won’t hold against them. It’s just easier this way. Hawke: Fenris and Merrill still have theirs left, I can’t wait to see what they come up with.
hawke: (looks directly at the camera)
This sums up DA2 perfectly.
Leandra Hawke singing ‘Baby Mine' to her children before bed
and when she dies
Hawke pulls her into their lap, and starts singing the old lullaby to her… but they can’t finish because they start sobbing too much
so Leandra uses the last of her strength to sing the rest
anonymous asked: Favourite Villain from Dragon Age - Knight-Commander Meredith
↳ ”I tried to have sympathy! Maker knows, I’ve tried! But how can we allow them freedom when so many would use it to commit atrocities? They control minds, they become abominations, they began the Blight itself!”
*narrows eyes suspiciously*
HOLY SHIT
wait, what is this reference? I feel like I’m missing something.
i’m guessing that something like that could hold fenris’s memories? since it says “minrathous”
oh it was definitely trauma, but here’s my theory about Danarius: he intentionally wiped his mind, maybe through a combination of torture and magic via the lyrium ritual. we know Danarius can do it willingly and that it wasn’t just an accidental consequence of the lyrium ritual itself because if you give Fenris back to him he does it again.
it’s an effort to control Fenris and mold him into the perfect victim. the thing is, wouldn’t Danarius want a backup plan, just in case he went too far and rendered Fenris completely passive—Tranquil-like? Danarius doesn’t seem to want that; he wants obedience, but he’s obsessed with Fenris/whoever Leto might have been.
so I’m thinking Danarius might have made “copies” of his memories in one of these dwarven relics just in case something ever went wrong and he needed to restore a portion of Fenris’ mind.
companions in origins: we will follow the warden through fire and darkness to save ferelden
companions in inquisition: we will follow the inquisitor through tears in the veil itself to save thedas
companions in dragon age 2: we will follow hawke because we love hawke. hawke has no idea where they’re going and sometimes we’re just standing still for long periods of time while hawke thinks of a witty comeback. oh okay we’re following hawke to the tavern i guess. is that guy pissing in the street? we love hawke

Allow me to play devil’s advocate!
Fenris in DA2:
- Has a background that is totally unrelated to anything else that is going on in Kirkwall, making him a poor foil for Anders’ rebellion against the Chantry system.
Fenris in DA:I:
- Has a natural entry-point into the story as a hunter of slavers and magister assholes.
- Also provides a very good foil to Dorian, insofar as Dorian’s pride in Tevinter culture is couched in his own unexamined privilege.
- Could easily be given a personal quest that ties in to Calpurnia’s backstory, further bringing him into the main story. For extra heartache there could also be a red lyrium tattoo scare.
- Fits in with the Inquisition’s crew of experienced warriors who want to eradicate injustice. We see a lot of determination and sadness and loss in the Inquisition personal quests, but not so much anger. Maybe some anger would be good for them.
Sera in DA:I:
- Is out of place amongst the older and more experienced party members.
- Has a personal storyline that only ties in to the greater plot to the extent that it reminds the player that commoners exist.
An aged-up Sera in DA2:
- Fears magic because she witnessed blood magic firsthand in the Denerim alienage, and provides some context for why regular people are so afraid of mages in the first place.
- Vocally believes in the Chant of Light, putting a more human face on the doctrine that Anders speaks out against.
- Has an epic rivalry with Merrill, because let’s be real, in what universe is Sera okay with some Dalish blood mage feeling free to drag a dangerous mirror into the center of the alienage because her elfy elf research is more important than the safety of those around her.
- Fits right in with Hawke’s ragged crew of outcasts, but is not afraid to challenge a pro-mage Hawke.
Yes but let me expand on this:
- Fenris and Vivienne finding surprising common ground in their shared beliefs on the Circle and on magic. Fenris slowly coming to befriend a mage. Vivienne teaching Fenris to read.
- Sera leaving tips that in turn leave cloth and food and herbs on Anders’ doorstep - he’s wrong about everything, about mages and the Maker and that demon in his head, but he’s always helping people and never asks for anything in return and that has to count for something.
- Fenris and Krem going at each other in the courtyard with their ridiculously oversized weapons, chugging Aggregio Pavali straight out of the bottle (hopefully not sticking the bottle up their nose *cough*), talking in Tevene - Dorian is not invited.
- Sera always talking with someone new every time you visit her, putting real faces on the people of Kirkwall, laborers and servants and refugees who can’t afford to leave, who just want the chaos to end.
- Red lyrium Fenris during In Hushed Whispers.
- Sera and Isabela hooking up if neither of them are romanced.
Hawke: Your problems are my problems.
Fenris: Unlucky you.
