I APPROVE ALL THESE HEADCANONS ABOUT THESE CUTE DORKS
you know, black widow is a hard character to write and it’s not like they have a script just lying around-
well they can’t have had that for long-
it’s been such a long time though, i’m sure he doesn’t still want to do it-
well, it’s also not like there was ever another script in development before or anything-
but does she have any history of working well with Marvel and writing a great movie with a plot that seemed like a hard sell-
it’ll be hard to find a director though, that will have to bear the responsibility of directing the first Marvel female-led movie-
but is she a strong character who has been established in several other hugely successful/well-received movies and played by one of the most bankable actresses in the world-
then again, maybe she doesn’t even want to do a black widow movie-
wow, so what the fans have to say actually matters?! that’s great! so they might listen to us and-
but they do supposedly have movies planned up until 2028, we must at least be getting one black widow movie at some point-
but wait-
So I’ve been sitting on this gifset for a while, trying to think of how I want to parse this.
Maybe I’m following the wrong blogs, but I just do not see enough meta about Natasha’s story arc in this movie. This scene here is, to me, one of the three critical moments for Natasha that are the reasons she ends up being the one to release all of SHIELD’s data to the world.
As follows (quotes paraphrased as I don’t have the script):
What I believe this all points to is really well reflected in her line to Steve, “I don’t know everything, I just act like I do” (paraphrased), and then reiterated in the truck ride where she talks about being the person she needs to be, as opposed to who she is.
In other words, Natasha is so good at being “whatever you need me to be” that it is exactly what the people who know her best expect of her, and accordingly don’t feel like she’s trustworthy because they don’t know the “real” her. Meanwhile she has been operating on the belief that they do know the real her and so therefore do trust her.
It’s like…a double blind situation, where both parties aren’t privy to the truth, even though they think they are. Everyone up to and including Fury “knows” that Natasha is a spy and nothing she says can be trusted; Natasha “knows” that the people she trusts see through that mask and trust her in return because they know the real her. She goes around in this movie constantly surprised and disarmed by the fact that her closest friends/co-workers doubt her loyalty.
So in the end, when Pierce is asking if she is ready for her past to be revealed, she is so fucking ready it hurts. She knows it is the right thing to do, but putting that on top of the experiences given above, it’s easy to see that she felt she had to do it for herself too.
Can she be trusted? You’re damn right she can, and she was willing to burn down her entire world to prove that fact to the very people she thought knew it already.
”..Who the hell is Natasha?”
I became so engrossed in the idea of Natasha being the Winter Soldier I COULDN’T HELP IT sorrynotsorry
First attempt at Natasha. She ended up looking like a cross between 616 and mcu, haha u__u;;
tony walks into his living room one day to see clint on the couch eating cheetos “how did you even get in my house?!” “don’t worry,” natasha says “i let him in.” “hOW DID YOU GET INTO MY HOUSE?”
clint is like “fuck off i just saved the tri-state area.” “i didn’t hear about anything happening to the tri state area” says tony. “yeah,” clint says "that’s because i do my goddamned job.”
what if the first scene of age of ultron is just natasha going up to clint and saying ‘okay but seriously where the hell have you been for the past two years?' and then it cuts to clint playing grand theft auto and ignoring his phone which is ringing off the hook
i love that in thor clint’s like “yeah i COULD take him out but damn look at that fighting i’m rooting for him”
i assume nobody was surprised when he brought home a stray kgb agent
DON’T FUCKING TELL ME NATASHA IS COLD AND HEARTLESS.
Remember how he jokingly threatened her and got a powerfully afraid reaction?
Then remember when he cornered and almost killed her as the Hulk?
This man lives under an avalanche of guilt about the way he’s treated this woman.
And what she says here is, “you’re useful. We need you. Your abilities are a benefit to this situation.”
There is no higher compliment from Natasha. The kind of woman who will bare her soul to an evil god in order to get the information she needs from him values utilitarianism above all else.
She’s comforting him here, reminding him that even though he’s different, even though they’ve clashed, she needs and wants him on the team.
NATASHA ROMANOFF IS A QUEEN.
