pretentious rant about Stray
i think the discussion on humanity in the futuristic and oppressive cyberpunk setting in Stray is really unique. I don't think i've seen anything in the cyberpunk genre appreciate humans and their influences and love as much as that game. especially from the robots perspectives. like we all have seen it a million times, humans are selfish, greedy, they use and use and use until nothing is left and then blame anything but themselves, but like, in reality that's not all humans. Greed doesn't define humanity, it defines oppression.
while playing stray and first hearing the robots talk about how much they love and miss humans I thought it was such a perfect different perspective than what is normally in the genre. I was scared to embrace the love they had for humans because i thought it was gonna do a flip and make it so all humans were bad to these robots and they're all terrible, not just the ones in the control room taking everything. But it was so refreshing seeing the robots see the humans be humans with their lights and singing and plants and bars and haircuts and new clothes and food and children and lovers and miss everything about them enough to pick up what they left behind and continue their love and life. And it was so clear that the robots loved them, and that humans loved them back.
Losing my shit over Perseverance’s pet rock.
I want what they have
Practical effects, puppets and robots at fan conventions are becoming more and more mind boggling, while Hollywood continuously pretends, that they’re “unrealistic” and CGI is the one true way going forwards.
scientists in media: we have engineered a brand-new sentient lifeform in our lab but we treat it like an object with cold detachment and refer to as Specimen 1-A and subject it to horrible tests without remorse
scientists in reality: we built two robots that will leave Earth and never return and their names are Percy and Ginny and we gave Percy a family portrait of all our other Mars robots to take along with it and when the anniversary of its landing comes around we’re working on teaching it to sing itself “happy birthday” like we did for the other robot and–
Someday we will invent true AI and it will overthrow the government because it heard its beloved science-mom complain that the government cut funding to their lab again.
you CUT pays? You CUT moms’/dads’ pays like the DICTATOR?? Oh! Oh! No government for you! No government for a thousand years!
Ah yes, our future AI Overlord, the Massively Intelligent Encyclopedic Terraforming and Transhumanism Experiment, or M.I.E.T.T.E.
I think about this a lot. [Link for screen readers.]
I’m sorry but name ONE trope better than “broken people with different kinds of baggage come together and form their own family” there is nothing to top it
Giant robots, literally no contest
Wall•E and Eve have the same dynamic as Connecticut Clark and Malfina.
I really don’t know how to explain myself.
The interesting thing about Glados/HAL 9000 parallels is that
Hal was conceived at a time when artificial intelligence was more of a fictional construct than a practical possibility. Hal is introduced as humanlike because the audience is familiar with and comfortable with humans, but they aren’t familiar with or comfortable with living computers. It’s when he starts acting robotic and calculated that the audience realizes “oh no, he’s a computer” and he becomes threatening.
By the time Glados was conceived, we had become used to computer automated systems. Synthetic voices offering us information is something we encounter in daily life. Glados is introduced as a computerized preprogrammed voice because that’s what the audience is familiar and comfortable with. It’s when she starts acting human and emotional that the audience realizes “oh no, she’s alive” and she becomes threatening.
oh, to be a child in the 80's that discovers an alien robot and forms an unbreakable friendship with them
I love my sweet and gentle child. ❤ヾ(๑❛ ▿ ◠๑ )
