one of my friends found radiooooo which is a site that streams music from any country from any decade (well, most countries/decade combos work) and we’ve been digging going on a quest to find what is rad

so far the following is good

  • 50s/60s/70s/80s russia
  • 70s cambodia
  • 20s japan
  • 80s ethiopia
  • 80s india

let’s add 70s armenia and 70s japan to this list

actually im willing to bet 70s *any country will be amazing, it’s all been really good so far

and if you go for 90s india fast music you might get hit in the face with tunak tunak tun right away so get your meme groove on

one of my moms recommended 70s east germany and this proves true, this is weird and amazing in a good way

also set the mood to “weird” for maximum fun, it enhances literally every station

Archive.org deliver a windfall of lost music.

If you’re looking for a good way to spend the rest of your week, Archive.org have unearthed a gigantic collection of cassettes from the mid-eighties into the mid-nineties. According to their notes, the collection was saved from the archives of noise-arch.net and donated by former CKLN-FM radio host Myke Dyer in August of 2009. Due to the size and obscurity, the collection hasn’t been properly notated but is said to include cassettes ranging from “tape experimentation, industrial, avant-garde, indie, rock, DIY, subvertainment and auto-hypnotic materials”. Head to Archive now to download the free collection.

I know that some of you will lose your minds over this.

Let's talk about mynoise.net

Have you ever been listening to Rainymood and thought, “Yeah, this is good … but it would be nice if I could customize the sound more, or if there was a little more choice.

Let me introduce you to MyNoise.

MyNoise is a customizable sounscape looper with so many options, even within each soundscape.  So say, for instance, you really love rain sounds when you write or study or relax.  Anything.  I know I’m a big fan of rain sounds.  They have a page for that.

But say you like really high, pattery rain, and LOTS of low thunder.  Here’s where MyNoise really stands out: you can customize that.  See those sliders with all the cute colors?  That is your equalizer. You can adjust the levels based on what you want to hear more and less of.  Here’s how it looks when you want high, pattery rain and low, rumbly thunder:

But say rain isn’t really your jam.  Say you want something a little more ambient, a little more background noise-y.  Something with people.  Well, they have customizable coffee house chatter that even has the levels listed for things like “kitchen,” “babble,” and “table”:

Or say you miss the ocean.

Or say you miss your cat.

Or say you miss your spaceship.

Or say you miss the dungeon where you and your team of scalawag adventurers used to explore and face off against, say, dragons.  In the dungeon.

This site is seriously so helpful, and those are just a fraction of every kind of sounscape the site has to offer.  The best part is that if you want to layer it with music (for instance, I’ll layer a playlist + rain + coffee shop if the scene I’m writing takes place in a coffee shop), you can adjust the master volume, meaning all of your layers stay at their respective volumes, just louder or quieter.

Enjoy!

Hi, love your work. I recently got into chiptunes and have been having a hard time creating sounds I like. How do you get yours? Are they mostly samples, or do you create the instruments yourself

Avatar

Hi! I’m glad you like chiptunes! I draw a lot of the waveforms myself, but that only works for that specific kinda tracker-chip sound. For “accurate” or clean sounding stuff, here are some of the free tools I use to create my chiptune sounds:

Famitracker, NES VST – NES (Famitracker is also a tracker so you can compose in it, but I often use it purely for the instrument design feature which I find very intuitive).

VOPM – FM

Chip32 – 32byte wavetable synth (nice to draw your own waveforms in!)

Basic64 – C64

Hope that helped a bit!

So there's this website that gives you every song that played in an episode (no matter how short a time it was playing)

It even gives you a description of the scene so you know when/where you heard it

Look!

you guys probably already knew about this but yeahh. I’m just really excited because I was wondering what that song was when Mickey walks into the club

But it’s here for future references

I’VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THIS SONG FOR A WEEK OMFG I LOVE YOU

The Infinite Jukebox

Hello, Tumblr. See this thing?

It is the best goddamned thing you’ve seen all day.

Say hello to the Infinite Jukebox, an experiment in looping songs. See those curves cutting through the circle? What this bad boy does is analyze the song for similar beats and sounds, then randomly skips between said beats forever.

Yes, you heard me. Forever. With this piece of musical genius, you can literally play the same song for as long as you want - It will create the song that never ends.

Some examples include:

And if that’s not enough, you can upload your own MP3s to this bitch and it’ll loop those as well.

Have fun, kids.

I’ve seen some background noise pages around tumblr like rainymood, but I don’t think I’ve really seen this page recommended on tumblr.

The plus of this page is without a doubt the huge list of sound machines that you can open in several tabs and mix as you like, ranging from natural sounds like rain and waves to industrial noises to relaxing tunes like in utero. It’s suitable as background noise for work as well as for relaxing and sleep.
