I’ve been toying with this idea lately (its not really a theory since its pretty much entirely unsubstantiated, its not really a headcanon either, just kind of like a loose idea) about the Diamonds, going with the theory that Diamond is more of a title than what a Gem is (following ‘Rose was Pink Diamond’ theory). Like, if Diamonds were actual Diamonds, it would make sense for them to be in charge, because diamonds are incredibly strong gems (plus they’re overvalued so they work well as a metaphor for people on the top of a society overstating their worth in order to remain in power), but if the four Diamonds weren’t actually Diamonds but other Gems they might be strong, but not Diamond-strong. So it seems like there might be some other reason they could qualify for the title, that isn’t just strength-based
So maybe, going with the four Diamond theory, these Gems qualified to ‘lead’ Gem society because they created ways to make more Gems (perhaps Gems of specific types). So they were granted the title of Diamond because they’re furthering Gem society by making more Gems (since Gems themselves cannot breed). Because while the Kindergartens make sense as a way to make a lot of Gems, not all gems are formed underground by specific minerals and pressure, there have to be some other methods (to make Pearls at the very least, and other organic Gems [amber, jet, etc] is they exist)
So, like, Rose seems like she was involved in setting up the Kindergarten’s on Earth and for all we know she could’ve invented the technology (while Kindergartens might make all kinds of Gems, all we know for sure is that they make Quartzes. That could just be the Kindergarten’s on Earth or maybe all Kindergarten’s make Quartzes because a Quartz established them?). Yellow Diamond seems like she had a big role in the fusion experiments, which are made up of shattered Gems, so maybe she had something to do with using shattered Gems as soldiers, like described in “Frybo”? Since the rebellion, Yellow Diamond may’ve taken over Kindergarten productions, too
So then maybe the speculated White and Blue Diamonds invented ways to make Gems, too. Since this idea is entirely speculative and unsubstantiated anyway, I was thinking White or Blue Diamond could possible be the Nacre we’ve theorized about. Creating a method to make Pearls (and maybe Abalone? Ammolite? Perhaps even unrelated organic gems like Amber). White Diamond would be the obvious choice there but nacre can also appear very very blue and I think that would be a connection with Pearl in how her projections and holograms are blue. Currently unsure what kind of Gems the fourth Diamond would make
like I said, totally unsubstantiated and doesn’t really hold up to scrutiny or anything, so don’t take it too seriously, but it was just an idea I thought was interesting and wanted to share
