A full-page, color advertisement for Lait brand face cream (foundation, o-shiroi) featured a smartly dressed young actress, Hara Setsuko (b. 1920), who would not look out of place in any of the world’s cosmopolitan centers. The advertisement notes that women can choose among four different, “modern” colors of Lait: flesh tone, light flesh tone, ochre, and white. The prominent use of French (“Blanc de Lait”) in the advertisement, as well as the full-length photograph showing the entire fashion ensemble (not merely the face, even this famous one), and the female appropriation of masculine attire (suit with necktie), achieves an air of internationalism and sophistication.
