Why is it always “Dumbledore is my fave” or “Dumbledore is abusive” and never “Dumbledore is so fucking afraid of letting another dark wizard come to power that he channels his own darkness into training a human weapon from childhood to fight the darkness that he knows he can’t while pretending to be the wise wizard mentor that he wishes he actually was wow that is a super fascinating character and we should write all the fanfiction about it?”
Dumbledore did what he thought he had to in order to save the world. He did not see another way and absolutely no one else was stepping up to fix the Voldemort problem. No one had a better idea.
Harry was always meant to be a contingency plan. Dumbledore worked his ass off trying to find and kill Voldemort while he was still weak but nothing worked.
Like, Dumbledore was who the world needed him to be. He sacrificed everything, including his life. Does this make him a good person? No. But it’s very easy to say he should have done things differently. I’m sure he would have loved to do things differently.
A truly evil man would not have kept Harry out of the fight for as long as he did. He really wanted Harry to have as close to a normal childhood as possible.
What I’m saying is that Dumbledore was a complicated character. Reducing him to flat ideas of “good” or “bad” is boring.
All of this and teenagers kind of have to be the ones to solve all of the plot’s problems in a young adult story. That’s how the genre works.
Other hot take as this came across my dash again: Dumbledore’s insistence on Harry having a ‘normal’ childhood, for better or worse, and even aside from the magic-protection related excuse, is a lot more poignant when you remember that Dumbledore is the Harry Potter of his generation. He saved the Wizarding World and no one will let him forget it, let him forget what he sees as the consequences of his failures that he had to then make up for. And then for the rest of his life the entire country is looking to him to solve all their problems, as if his judgment is without reproach. The smallest of benefits that he had was that he was at least a grown ass adult to carry that burden of fame and regret. And it’s far easier said than done to confront his past mistakes when everything to shit again, and then a third time still at the point of the books. But the last thing he can do is second guess himself with so many people looking to him for guidance, much less talk out his feelings about how he failed to see the signs because of his best friend, and then failed to see them again in one of his own students.
And now he’s got the responsibility of a kid that’s in an even more terrible situation than he’s in, while the country is currently going to shit for the third time in his life.
#all very obvious points and yet our fandom deliberately misunderstands Albus to villainize him #this is why all fanfics that have other character(s) pulling a “solution” to the big issues of the series out of their ass(es) fall flat #he is literally one of the more brilliant and humane characters in the series. if these solutions were available Albus would do them first
The thing that stands out the most to me is the idea that ‘Albus always intended Harry to have to die; a pig for slaughter’ When the entire story is of him very desperately trying to keep Harry alive. Risking everything just to try and find a way to save him.
People act like Harry coming back to life after Voldemort killed him was always going to happen. It wasn’t. Albus clawed for that. Even if he wanted Harry specifically to deal with the Horcrux’s for whatever reason - there was no reason to try and bring him back.
The man who has always struggled with love, who studies it as a scholar, who keeps everyone at arms length fought tooth and nail to mechanically replicate the magical miracle of Harry’s mother. Harry Potter was the boy who lived TWICE - once from his mothers effortless love and once from Albus’s dedicated love.
The reasons to kill Harry, or simply let him die, outweigh keeping him alive. There are points where simply taking Harry out back and shooting him would have been a stronger strategic move. Where Harry is more of a risk than a help. A complication. And yet his life is consistently put OVER the lives of others.
And people wonder why. Why does Albus act so strangely, sheltering and protective, considering Harry HAS to face darkness and die…? They think up elaborate reasons for Albus to have micro-managed every single little thing, making Harry live in The Truman Show. Or they have every decision be so needlessly risky and stupid that it’s insane anyone has any faith in him whatsoever. And those theories can be fun. Hagrid is a Death Eater type stuff. But the books give us a far more compelling canon answer:
Because he fell in love with Harry. He goes into detail about his thoughts, even when they are irrational and embarrassing, that he never expected to love Harry this much. It all lines up. His choices, his mistakes, his plans and his hasty decisions… Harry thawed his cold logic, his frozen heart.
But there’s such a prevalent 'Buzzfeed top 10 reasons why Albus is actually the villain Number 8 - he left Harry with his next of kin’ train of thought that every action, no matter how small, is considered deeply manipulative - and every actually manipulative action has no depth. To the detriment of all characters and the story as a whole.
Unfortunately evergreen
I know we’re still waiting on the House, but man. I knew he had a big chance of winning, but the margin by which he’s winning is crazy. It’s not nearly as close as I thought.
All I can say is, there are going to be good people doing good work. There are grassroots activists, lawyers, and some good lawmakers who will keep fighting for you and with you.
Please take care of yourselves. Cry, scream, distract yourself—do whatever you’ve gotta do. We’ve got each other and we’ll figure it out.
my bad for assuming everyone has critical thinking skills btw
ten years late to the party but hi

I honestly and truly believe all good AUs should be a little “”””ooc”””” in the sense that good characterisation involves understanding that changes a characters backstory and circumstances will have an effect on how they respond to the world around them
Good characterisation isn’t about creating a perfect 1:1 canon replica it’s about understanding why a character is different in your work and about grounding the changes you do deliberately choose to make in canon character traits
can I just log in
goodbye
“I’m…” Harry could hardly speak. “I’m scared, Sirius.”
“I know, Harry, but I’m here. You’re safe with me.”
Harry sagged against the embrace. And as he let Sirius hold him and promise him that no one could harm him now, a childish part of Harry could almost believe that as long as he was in Sirius’s arms, Voldemort could never find him and hurt him again.

He can finally hug Harry now 🥰 Just finished this painting in time. I am completely exhausted now, I have been painting this whole week.
So this is the full version of the Sirius portrait recently. No one guessed the scene correctly, but that’s fine, I already expected that. I was just so curious about your thoughts on his expression :)
Ok, I adore the Frogs to begin with, but the sheer finesse and dedication of this one boggles my mind.
me: this is cute and precious
my brain: 45 years ago this person could've made a public access television show that ran for half a decade on the strength of this concept with the right framing device and it would've been paid for with federal arts grants and maybe even national syndication rights. now they're begging for a single minute of engagement on tiktok in the hopes that maybe someday the abstract metrics of digital media platforms will translate into a tangible career
me: yeah me: cute frog though
my brain: it is a cute frog
This was Hillary's final rally in Philadelphia in 2016. She had a crowd size of 40,000+ people. If you think you don't have to vote because the numbers appear good for Harris right now, think again. It's not over until it's over. Vote.
