Any Chizuru and Kaoru role swap headcanons?
None whatsoever, before you asked. To be perfectly honest, I haven’t spent a great deal of time considering that, not even after Sakamoto’s route tried really hard to get me to do so. It’s just not something I want to think about…
- The Nagumo family is stated to have been especially interested in Chizuru due to her potential for bearing children. Therefore, she would undoubtedly be forced into an arranged marriage with Kazama the moment she came of age.
- Both Kaoru and Chizuru are fully aware of their heritage. Even if Chizuru’s memories are hazy, she is still raised as a demon among demons. Having been raised apart from humans and with the knowledge of the Yukimura genocide, she may not empathize with them as readily as her canon counterpart.
- As for Kaoru, I have my doubts as to whether Kodo would bother taking him under his wing, since his interest in Chizuru also seems to have much to do with her status as a female demon. Therefore, it is entirely possible that Kaoru spends the first part of his life as a street urchin in Edo, either because Kodo doesn’t bother saving him or because he runs away of his own volition (probably after Kodo goes ahead and hands her over to the Nagumo without giving him a say).
- Kaoru’s primary mission is to rescue his sister, but his secondary mission is a bit more complex. Free of the Nagumo family’s debt and influence, I can actually see him actively supporting the shogunate over the imperial army, since the Satchou were responsible for razing the Yukimura village. Although his ambition would ultimately be to destroy all humans, he resolves to start with the Satchou and then turn on the shogunate once victory is assured.
- The thing is, in order to be able to save his sister and take his revenge, he’ll have to become much stronger first, worthy of his title as head of the Yukimura clan. To become stronger, he’ll have to train until he’s capable of using Daitsuren. And which is one of the only dojos in Edo known to take in young, unproven strangers off the streets? That’s right: Shiei Hall.
…Gods help me, I kind of want to write this now… Thanks so much for forcing me to think about this!!
