You've said before that Kimigiku's real name is Kikuzuki, but where did you get the name from?

Amagiri refers to her as Kikuzuki in his DLC story, “The Waxing and Waning of the Moon”, for Stories of the Shinsengumi:

The woman’s real name was Kikuzuki. She had been Princess Sen’s eyes, ears, and hands in Kyoto, and spent much of her time gathering information in Shimabara. There, she had been known as Kimigiku…

I’m not sure if anyone else ever says it in canon, but Amagiri’s word is good enough for me!

Kimigiku 28, 47, and 48

Who do they see as their best friend? Their worst enemy? Kimigiku doesn’t have a ‘best friend’, but she is on good terms with most of her fellow geisha in the Sumi—human or demon—and considers Sen something of a friend in addition to a superior. As for her enemies, anyone who threatens Sen and/or Yase is fair game, but she prefers not to hold personal grudges since they take up valuable energy she could be using more constructively.

If they were to fall in love, who (or what) is their ideal? Kimigiku is duty-centric enough that she doesn’t spend a lot of time thinking about romance. Additionally, as a female clan head, her options are extremely limited, and she is pragmatic enough not to want to get her hopes up. That said, if she had her choice, she would prefer a partner who allows her quite a bit of freedom; understands that her first great love is duty; adheres to demonic tradition; and conducts themselves honorably.

How do they express love? As regards her patrons, Kimigiku behaves as is expected of a geisha; there’s a reason she’s the second-highest-ranking variety of oiran. Apart from that, she does not maintain many personal relationships of any kind, so both platonic and romantic love manifests more as unconditional support. If their goals align, she is more than willing to do whatever her allies ask to prove that they can rely on her, even if it is dangerous. Additionally, in matters of ensuring happiness and comfort, her intuition is so good that she does not often need to ask what her allies need from her, although she tends to shy away from most emotional intimacy.

Can I request how Amagiri would react to Kimigiku telling him she is with child?

I’m all fanfic’d out, so unfortunately I can’t illustrate this, but I think the best way to describe it is “quietly ecstatic”.

Amagiri and Kimigiku have been married for some time, and while they haven’t been trying for a baby as frequently as Kazama and Sen, having children is definitely one of their priorities. However, after several months with no success, it’s beginning to wear on them both enough that they’re considering readjusting their pacing/strategy. But now there’s no need for that, as their prayers have been answered. Kimigiku would be tactful about letting Amagiri know, of course. She’d come up behind him one evening as he reads, putting her arms around him in a loving embrace, and whisper in his ear.

“I have good news,” she’d tell him. Amagiri wouldn’t even need to respond; she knows to take his silence as encouragement to continue. “You’re going to be a father.” And while it wouldn’t be a surprise since they have been trying, Amagiri can probably count on one hand the times his heart has ever skipped a beat like this. He’d set his book down slowly and turn to look at her, to find her eyes shining. This is what they’ve wanted: a scion for both their clans, and a family of their own.

Even though they both know he heard her perfectly well, he’d ask her, softly, to say it again, because of all the beautiful sounds that have passed through Kimigiku’s perfect lips, those words are some of the loveliest he’s heard yet. She’d oblige him, of course. And then they’d share a tender kiss in celebration of new beginnings, and discuss breaking the news to everyone else.

#20 Hijikata.

What-ifs/alternate timelines

What if Hijikata had been injured in Osaka instead of Sanan? Would he have made similar decisions? In the event that he drank the Water of Life, would he remain in the forefront of the Shinsengumi or be presumed dead like Sanan? What role would Sanan take instead? How would this affect the plot and characterization in general?

What if Hijikata was as popular in Shimabara as his historical counterpart? What if he and Kimigiku had a dalliance, as in history? How would this romance affect his personality and actions, if at all? Would Chizuru still be in the picture for him, or would her ‘canon’ love interest change accordingly?

What if Hijikata and Chizuru’s relationship was assumed to have escalated much earlier on, given the traditional roles of a samurai and his page? Would Hijikata try to prove these rumors wrong somehow, or would he act on them instead? Would Chizuru? In the latter case, would theirs be a romantic connection, or purely physical? Would that affect Chizuru’s other prospects?

Do you know if Kimigiku and Sen-hime have last names?

The closest thing to established canon we have is that Sen is referred to as “Suzuka Sen” in SSL, due to her connection to Suzuka Gozen. However, her alleged ancestor in Demons’ Bond is most often referred to as “Princess Yase” instead, which I find more plausible. Meanwhile, Kimigiku (real name Kikuzuki) is stated to be a member of a clan that has protected the princesses of Yase for generations. That implies that she is of the same clan as Suzumori Yukina, who guards Princess Yase in DB.

So, short answer: I have their full names as Yase Sen and Suzumori Kikuzuki, but there is no canon answer for either one.

Best places to kiss on their body

She may kiss her customers, because that is a part of the game she has agreed to play, but she is not theirs to kiss. Human mouths are always indiscriminately hungry, and her flesh is not theirs to savor. Even the few demons that visit establishments like this have walked among humans too long, either learning their habits or proclaiming their superiority. But, though she has never been clasped in the arms of a true lover, she imagines the sensation often. Just a simple, chaste, reciprocal kiss on the lips—not her advance, because she must, but theirs, because they love her—would be enough.

Humiliating memories

Mizuage. As a maiko, she made sure to excel in all areas of her training, just like her mother before her: even as a girl, she was not a woman to be outdone, even by her predecessors. But to be auctioned off like a common human in preparation for becoming a fully-fledged geisha—she couldn’t help but delay it as long as possible, years after she was deemed ready to graduate, because she was terrified of losing an irretrievable part of herself. And even though they accommodated her wishes, and even allowed her first to be a demon of Yase, she couldn’t help but cry all the same. Her face burns to think of how frightened she once was of something that has now become so ordinary to her. After all, if a man pays her mizuage, what woman can be so heartless as to repay him with tears?

People who’ve influenced them greatly

There is the Princess, of course, but her lady’s parents were the ones she grew up serving first. From a young age, she practically lived in the palace alongside them, learning her duty by example as the youngest leader of her clan in generations. The former Princess and her consort instilled in her many of her current ideas of what it truly means to be a demon, regardless of blood purity, and encouraged her in developing all her skills almost as if she were their own child—but always with the same gentle distance her lady shows her now. They taught her what it meant to govern a clan as surely as they taught their own daughter, and she will be forever grateful for that.

KazaSen Appreciation Day 2017

An Oni’s Blush

By Lakerae

***This story takes place after Sekkaroku episode 6.

The harsh scent of sake and fish lingered in the room. Sen remained seated, fanning herself, her heart still recovering from what previously transpired fifteen minutes ago.

“What a rude asshole,” Sen muttered to herself, catching Kimigiku’s quick glance at her. “He left without saying good-bye.”

Kimigiku’s lips curled into a shy smile. “You sound wounded, Princess,” she teased, picking up empty cups and bottles onto a tray.

Sen scoffed and stretched her fan wide open, hiding the growing blushes on her cheeks. “Not at all,” she responded, her voice high-pitched.

<3!!!!!!!! I love this take on Sen and Kimigiku’s relationship and how easily she can read her emotions!! (I’m always a sucker for people having one another’s best interests at heart, especially when it results in matchmaking my OTP.)

ToT for Sen-hime: Of the Shiranui, Amagiri and Kazama, who would you feel most comfortable taking advice from (if Kimigiku were unavailable for some unfathomable reason)? And (if this is allowed) Kimigiku, IF you were unavailable, who would you rather Sen-hime listened to for advice?

“Amagiri,” responds Sen promptly. “Despite his position on the other side of the humans’ conflict, he is the most likely to give me an impartial perspective. I am sure that Kazama and Shiranui would try to lead me astray—either to further their own interests, or simply for their own amusement.”

Kimigiku inclines her head, giving a faint smile of approval. “Indeed.”

Character meme: Kimigiku

Heading back to the characterization ask meme I still need to wrap up, with another character I don’t write as often as I should: my beloved Kimigiku, otherwise known as Kikuzuki! Because of that, these are a few things I personally try to keep in mind when I’m getting inside her head than things I’ve seen other people do:

  • She’s neither a lover nor a fighter. She is adept at playing the parts she is given, and compartmentalizing aspects of her personality (which is an awesome skill and I’d really have liked to see more of it). Though she is obviously a competent and educated geisha, her role in Shimabara is primarily that of information-gatherer. Furthermore, she may be Sen’s bodyguard, but as she states in Heisuke’s route, her skills do not extend to open combat. Her role is more in waiting, watching, and reporting—only from the shadows instead of decked out in pretty fabric. That said…
  • She’s ready to fight anyone who goes up against the Princess. Despite not being a warrior, her convictions and loyalty to Sen are so strong that she is willing to give her best anyway. For instance, upon hearing Kazama’s not-too-subtle threats against Yase in the DLC story “A Meeting of Demons”, she straight up tries to go after him to defend her (delivering some pretty sick burns as she does so), and Sen has to hold her back. Although she is ordinarily cool, serious, and somewhat aloof, there is a certain level of impulsive protectiveness to her personality that likewise isn’t given a lot of screentime.
  • She is very much a demon at heart. Her heritage isn’t gone into in canon, but based on the fact that Sen stabbed her once on Heisuke’s route and she was fine, I’m assuming she’s not human. But no matter what her blood is like, I’m talking more about her values. Not only is she fixated on fulfilling her duty to the Princess as her servant rather than as a friend, but she also places extremely high importance on her lady’s station—to the point that, on Heisuke’s route, she would rather sacrifice herself to kill Sen than allow her to lose her honor as a fury. Because of her fixation on demon pride and social status, talking things out never even enters Kimigiku’s head. It is the combination of Chizuru’s attempt to talk her out of madness, clinging to her human hope, and Kimigiku’s demonic willingness to give her life that sparks Sen’s return to sanity. It’s an interesting commentary on the limitations of human versus demon systems of thinking and how they interact (whether clashing or working together), as Kimigiku points out the reasons for her choice.

Updated Sexual/Romantic Orientation Headcanons

I looked back at my ancient headcanons post and it’s hopelessly out-of-date, so I decided to fix that!! Now that I have a better grasp of things, here’s my idea of all the folks who aren’t totally straight. Keep in mind, once again, that canon and culture have shaped my perspective, and also that you needn’t share my idea of the characters’ orientations. (But as a sidenote, we don’t know that much about most Shinkai-exclusive folks’ lifestyles yet, so I can’t analyze too many of them here.)

Tot for kazama sama, kimiguki and chizuru : Do you believe in Fate ?

“Absolutely not,” growls Kazama. “Our existence is what we make it—no more, no less. Nothing, in this world or out of it, could ever have absolute command over all possible outcomes, and I refuse to believe there is only one.”

Kimigiku gestures for Chizuru to go first, and she clears her throat timidly. “I don’t know,” she says. “I don’t think our futures are destined to stay the same all our lives, but I’ve always felt pulled in certain directions. And sometimes I get premonitions, or feelings like I’ve seen this all before.” She hesitates. “I don’t know if that’s fate, but… it’s the only explanation I have.”

“I agree,” says Kimigiku softly. “Our futures are made up of our actions in the present. While I believe we have the choice to ignore our destined path or follow it, I cannot deny that there seems to be that foundation.”
