This is so random, but how do you think all of the guys would have been like as teenagers growing up? I thought of this and was genuinely curious.

Oh man, this is so interesting to think about! Teenagehood is kind of a modern concept, since people used to come of age sometime during adolescence, but it’s still a crucial time for development. So let’s check ’em out…

the guys as a support network

Hijikata: besides the fact that he checks in on you a bit more often, you notice what he doesn't do more than what he does. he avoids subjects and pulls punches he normally wouldn't. you know he's there if you want to talk, and in the meantime, the steadiness of his behavior makes it easier for you to re-stabilize. nothing has really changed.
Okita: not the most sympathetic of friends, perhaps, but you know he still cares from the way he deftly maneuvers around certain subjects... or occasionally straight into them, if he thinks you're not addressing them enough. after all, it's better that he provoke you into articulating troublesome feelings than let them stay so ambiguous.
Saito: he may not know the first thing about dealing with deep and heavy emotions, but he's always willing to lend a listening ear and some rational advice. sometimes he tells you things you don't really want to hear, but desperately NEED to hear, because his every word is unapologetic truth. sometimes it's honestly the cold that shocks you out of it.
Heisuke: will not rest until he's seen you smile again. he doesn't want to pry, even though you can tell he's worried, so instead he distracts you from the pain as long as you'll let him. (after all, that's what he's used to doing for himself, so he's kind of an expert.) and if he accidentally brushes a sore spot, even you won't be sorrier than him.
Harada: hovers for days, making sure you're all right, but doesn't pry. besides offering some fun and distraction, he won't interfere unless you need to cry, and then he'll just hold you. he won't try to tell you it'll be okay, because he can't know that for sure. he'll just hold you, wiping away your tears with no words to get in the way.
Nagakura: asks too much, talks too much, and can't keep a secret to save his life... but his offer to beat up anyone who hurts you, no questions asked, always stands. he's not the best person to consult about feelings since tact isn't his mother tongue, but his advice is sincere, surprisingly practical, and comes straight from that heart of gold.
Sanan: the condolences he offers in the beginning feel a little bit scripted or even contrived, so you're not quite sure what to think of them at first. but in the coming days, he offers you fragments of unsolicited but pragmatic advice one phrase at a time. and the occasional cup of tea, usually over something cerebral enough to distract you.
Yamazaki: he may not ask what's wrong, but he understands, as much from his powerful intuition as his legitimate research. either way, he's never intrusive about it. he simply offers you small sympathetic smiles from a distance, keeps a watchful eye on your condition, and may or may not be responsible for sneaking you those mysterious sweets.
Iba: will support you unconditionally, regardless of whether or not you ask him to. despite his soft and soothing assurance and reassurance, in his heart burns an uncommonly fierce desire to protect you from any further harm. let him spoil you for awhile and dry your tears, and everything will be all right before you know it.
Souma: if there's anything he can do to help you, make no mistake, he will move heaven and earth to do it. you just have to be a little careful whenever you confide in him, because he's prone to misinterpretation, and the situations in which you find yourself are often more nuanced than he assumes. but it really is the thought that counts, here.
Sakamoto: has a habit of joking about acting as a rebound even when you're not going through a breakup, but once he's gotten all that pointless levity out of the way, he's capable of giving some frighteningly solid advice. his manner may not be the most diplomatic, but his perspective is different enough that the directness doesn't bother you.
Kazama: will needle you about whatever is wrong, then turn around and feign disinterest if you choose to tell him about it. but you can't help but notice that he's not being half as scornful as usual, nor does he immediately dismiss your feelings as irrelevant. in fact, he looks almost awkward. has anyone checked the temperature in hell?

In which Sen meets with two of Chikage’s relatives (and one of Amagiri’s) and discovers that her situation may be even more complicated than she realized. Thankfully, since Chikage has similar misgivings about his family’s opinions and/or agendas, at least this particular brand of adversity might actually form the basis for a modicum of unity…

Working Out the Kinks

For @reincarnated-regret, because this was really her idea.

Of course the one time Shinpachi turns out to be even remotely observant is the time Sano is trying to hide the bite marks on his neck.

“Oy, Sano, you never wear your hair down like that,” remarks Shinpachi, leaning against the wall, and startles Sano as soon as he enters the compound. Sano sighs internally; he’s never been good at sneaking around. “Did you lose your hair tie fighting that asshole, or something like that?”

“Something like that, yeah,” says Sano, rubbing his neck surreptitiously. He didn’t intend to let that go so far, but man, Shiranui really did a number on him this time. The semicircles on each side of his throat are much more pronounced than after the last visit, almost as red as his hair. Most of the marks should fade by tomorrow, but Shiranui’s skin cleared before Sano even left.

(What he wouldn’t give to be a demon…)

“Must’ve lost your little duel, if you’re looking that guilty about it,” says Shinpachi, grinning, and claps Sano on the shoulder. Sano almost buckles at the unexpected impact, wincing as a stray bite twinges, and Shinpachi eyes his reaction in some confusion. “Hang on—did he seriously hurt you?”

Sano hesitates, but then nods once. There was no easier way to explain his condition in the moment. “Nothing a little rest won’t fix,” he says, as confidently as he can. Telling Shinpachi he was going to face off against Shiranui seemed reasonable in the moment, if only so they’d know who killed him if he never came back, but it created a lot of unforeseen complications after the fact.

No no no no no,” says Shinpachi, grabbing Sano’s other arm a little more gently. “We’re headed for Fushimi tomorrow, so we need you in good condition, and demons are no joke. You’re going straight to Yamazaki!”

At long last, here it is! And it seems to have spiraled off into a real story, too. I try to keep the things I post on Tumblr under ~1.5k words (with varying degrees of success), but this somehow got to 2k, so I feel compelled to post it elsewhere and just link it here. I blame Shiranui.

Anyway, this probably isn’t worth the wait, but words can’t express how much I loved this idea. It was an utter pleasure to work with. Mostly bc Sakamoto’s Western wear is my favorite of all the guys’, so I get to borrow directly from my own damn thoughts…

Midnight Idea #14

It may not be midnight where I am, but my brain is about as hazy.

Now, this is absolutely just because I marathoned the “Ouran High School Host Club” anime over the last week or so, but I believe SSL would be approximately 200% better if a.) ages were skewed so that everyone was a student, because seriously though, and b.) there was—wait for it—a host club. I mean, they’re both reverse harems involving crossdressing, right?

I don’t think it’d be wise to translate it directly, but the similarity between the way Kyoya humors Tamaki is undeniably similar to the way Sanan and Hijikata humor Kondou. So I present to you the basis for… the Hakuō High School Host Club!

More has changed over the past five months than Chizuru ever could have imagined, but even considering the misfortune that came with them, she wouldn’t change a thing.

She feels as though she should be more affected by the fact that Heisuke broke up with her a few weeks ago, but as it is, he actually cried more than she did. They loved each other deeply—they still do—but Chizuru could feel that he wanted more from her than she felt ready to give. And he chose to leave her rather than pressure her, or ask her to change.

On the whole, Chizuru understands that she was true to herself and honest with Heisuke from the beginning, and therefore that there is precious little to regret. After all, he deserves to be happy, and if she cannot make him so, then she has no business being selfish and keeping him. She has only to look forward to the day they can be friends again, the air fresh and clear between them.

Still, given the stubborn innocence that ultimately drove Heisuke away, it is undeniably ironic that someone like Souji is still in Chizuru’s life.

…Barely. He fell out of it entirely for a while, once he had to drop the only class they shared, and her fascination ebbed away as everyday life demanded her attention. It flared up again only once, when Souji showed up on campus and called Chizuru’s name just before she opened the classroom door. Even the brief and superficial conversation that followed made her physically weak for an hour afterwards, so that it was all she could do to focus on her studies.

Since then, however, Chizuru’s life has gone almost entirely back to normal, and her feelings have calmed down again—more decisively this time. Enough that she is comfortable with inviting Souji back to her house, now that he has finally found some free time too.

But Chizuru was determined to keep her expectations of such a visit as low as possible. Having spent more time away from Souji now than the amount of time they’d known one another in the first place, she assumed they’d have to start all over again, rebuilding their rapport from the ground up.

Let the bite marks on her neck and the scratches on her back stand as testament to how wrong she truly was.

For those of you who missed my extremely brief memo, I have renamed prime and primal as nature/nurture, so if you’re following my KazaSen story, this is that!

Anyway, this chapter is by no means a masterpiece and certainly not worth a seven-month wait, but hey, it’s… decent. There’s some actual resolution, for one thing, instead of the usual placebo effect, although I can only hope I conveyed that appropriately since it’s a bit of a transformation. And also, as of this chapter, you’ve at least met everyone important! *cue protests from a few as yet unintroduced characters in the distance* Anyway, bios on my Kazama clan forthcoming, by which I mean immediately after this post.

I have also cross-posted to AO3 because I just recently learned how to use it (thanks, unrelated ship week!).

Una Sorta Bakumatsu: That Awkward Moment When You Realize That The Whole Game Was Being Named After Your Fave All This Time, The Key Word and Weird Translation Choices.

Some months ago, before Edo Blossoms was out, we made a theory about its translation, judging by the first part of the game (Kyoto Winds) and the choice of Kazama’s vocabulary in ALMOST ALL THE SCENES. It’s his key word, literally. So, @ people who played the second part, please tell me we were right.

Thanks @hameowlton and @once-a-turncoat for the idea! :>
