Hakuouki Question Meme

From this post! (I just don’t like reblogging lists of questions with all my answers attached, and I don’t wanna bother anyone by tagging for credit, but please do go check out the linked blog.)

1. Why/how did you decide to start playing Hakuōki?

I saw a post of KW/EB’s CGs (back in early 2016, long before it was localized—might even have been before Edo Blossoms was out in Japan) on @chibitorra​’s blog and liked the post, so she was all excited that I knew what Hakuōki was. When she found out I’d just liked the post because of the art style, she showed me some more art and I fell in love and later bought Memories without knowing anything at all about it, including the fact that Hakuōki is historical fiction.

2. What routes and/or games have you played so far?

All routes, extra content, and DLC in:

  • Memories of the Shinsengumi (3DS)
  • Stories of the Shinsengumi (PS3)
  • Hakuōki Shinsengumi Kitan (iOS)
  • Kyoto Winds (PS Vita)
  • Edo Blossoms (PS Vita)

And as a bonus:

  • Warriors of the Shinsengumi (PSP)

3. What is your favorite character and route? They don’t have to be the same.

Favorite character… oof. Difficult question. Still the disgrace to all demon-kind that is Kazama, though it’s worth noting that my first impulse was to say Shiranui. But my favorite route is definitely Heisuke’s.

Oh, there you are! Or someone else taking the opportunity to ask. (I wish read-mores still worked on asks, since it’s a long one…)

General:

  • Rate the Ship: Awful | Ew | No pics pls | I’m not comfortable | Alright | I like it! | Got pics? | Let’s do it! | Why is this not getting more attention?! | The OTP to rule all other OTPs
  • How long will they last? They’re in it for the long haul and have been from the start. Sano in particular isn’t about to let Chizuru slip through his fingers, and she’s perfectly content to stay with him forever.
  • How quickly did/will they fall in love? Not too fast. Chizuru has always admired Sano, since come on, look at the guy, but she got too far into her head about it, so his feelings developed in a romantic way first.
  • How was their first kiss? You’ve seen it in canon and it was… uh… awkward. Their second kiss, during their actual confession, was much better.

Wedding:

  • Who proposed? Sano, sort of, but… he never officially asked. It was just kind of a foregone conclusion that they’d get married. One could argue that it was the purpose of their relationship.
  • Who are the best man and groomsmen/maid of honor and bridesmaids? They don’t have that kind of ceremony, not least because they’re no longer in Japan, but they drink to Shinpachi and Heisuke, and Chizuru spares a thought for Sen.
  • Who did the most planning? It was an informal enough ceremony that it didn’t really require much planning, but Sano made the exact arrangements (meaning… going out and buying the equivalent of sake).
  • Who stressed the most? Chizuru, since she had just moved to an unfamiliar country and this was another change. Her nervousness was drowned out by excitement and then euphoria, though.
  • How fancy was the ceremony? Back of a pickup truck | 2 | 3 | 4 | Normal Church Wedding | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Kate and William wish they were this big.
  • Who was specifically not invited to the wedding? They didn’t have the luxury of inviting anyone at all, so no one was specifically excluded, either.

Sex:

  • Who is on top? Sano, usually, but they both love it when Chizuru surprises him and takes charge like the demon she is. (Sano will almost never admit how much he likes it outside of that context, though.)
  • Who is the one to instigate things? Also typically Sano, but Chizuru loves turning the tables. He especially loves it when she gets that insistent because it assures him that he isn’t pressuring her and that she wants him of her own free will.
  • How healthy is their sex life? Barely touch themselves let alone each other | 2 | 3 | 4 | Once or twice a week, nothing overboard | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | They are humping each other on the couch right now
  • How kinky are they? Straight missionary with the lights off | 2 | 3 | 4 | Might try some butt stuff and toys | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Don’t go into the sex dungeon without a horse’s head
  • How long do they normally last? Depends on who’s in charge. Usually just long enough, never too short and rarely “too” long.
  • Do they make sure each person gets an equal amount of orgasms? Absolutely. Sano is very careful about that.
  • How rough are they in bed? Softer than a butterfly on the back of a bunny | 2 | 3 | 4 | The bed’s shaking and squeaking every time | 6 | 7 | 8 | 9 | Their dirty talk is so vulgar it’d make Dwayne Johnson blush. Also, the wall’s so weak it could collapse the next time they do it.

Children:

  • How many children will they have naturally? Probably three, all sons.
  • How many children will they adopt? None.
  • Who gets stuck with the most diapers? Chizuru, but she doesn’t mind at first since Sano doesn’t know what he’s doing anyway. It’s when more kids come along that she makes him step it up.
  • Who is the stricter parent? Sano, but only because he has a pretty defined code of honor as a warrior. He’s not exactly stern.
  • Who stops the kid(s) from doing dangerous stunts after school? Chizuru. She worries about them, since they and Sano are all she has.
  • Who remembers to pack the lunch(es)? Chizuru. Even if the kids are homeschooled and there’s no reason to pack lunches, she still makes them.
  • Who is the more loved parent? They’re about equally loved, but Sano is an almost perfect father once he gets the hang of it. (It does take him a few years to really hit his stride, though.)
  • Who is more likely to attend the PTA meetings? If such a thing existed, Sano would want in on it. He’d want to make sure his sons are being treated well and not disciplined too harshly for “minor” transgressions.
  • Who cried the most at graduation? Chizuru.
  • Who is more likely to bail the child(ren) out of trouble with the law? Probably Sano, but you never know; Chizuru might help. They’d both want to help out, at any rate.

Cooking:

  • Who does the most cooking? Chizuru.
  • Who is the most picky in their food choice? Neither of them, really. Sano never grows out of the soldier principle of eating what he can whenever he can.
  • Who does the grocery shopping? Chizuru, but Sano often insists on coming with her, especially shortly after they emigrate.
  • How often do they bake desserts? Not too often, since Chizuru is careful about health, but they do so more often after they have kids. She even has Sano help.
  • Are they more of a meat lover or a salad eater? Chizuru makes sure their meals are balanced, but Sano prefers substantial things like meat.
  • Who is more likely to surprise the other(s) with an anniversary dinner? Sano. He’d want to repay Chizuru for all the crazy amount of effort she puts into homemaking and making him the happiest man alive.
  • Who is more likely to suggest going out? Sano. He loves showing off his family, even when it’s just him and Chizuru.
  • Who is more likely to burn the house down accidentally while cooking? Sano, but he’s not a bad cook. He just might end up distracted, like if he’s trying to keep the kids from killing each other or something.

Chores:

  • Who cleans the room? Usually Chizuru, but she makes Sano help out if a.) it’s really bad and/or b.) it’s mostly his mess (the two go hand in hand).
  • Who is really against chores? Sano.
  • Who cleans up after the pets? They don’t keep pets until their kids find a dog. Then, they make the kids take care of them.
  • Who is more likely to sweep everything under the rug? Sanoooooooo.
  • Who stresses the most when guests are coming over? Chizuru, once they make some friends in the area. She wants to make a good impression.
  • Who found a dollar between the couch cushions while cleaning? Sano. When Chizuru didn’t know whose it was, he put it in savings, just in case.

Misc:

  • Who takes the longer showers/baths? Chizuru. She likes being thorough.
  • Who takes the dog out for a walk? The kids.
  • How often do they decorate the room/house for the holidays? Very often. Having been cut off from their homeland, they feel obligated to celebrate every single Japanese holiday that comes their way.
  • What are their goals for the relationship? Their major goal was to get married and have kids, which they did quite quickly.
  • Who is most likely to sleep till noon? Sano, soaking in the fact that he doesn’t have to work night shifts anymore, but Chizuru almost always wakes him up before that happens.
  • Who plays the most pranks? Neither of them want to risk hurting one another, so they never play pranks as such, but Sano is more mischievous by nature and occasionally plays good-natured tricks on Chizuru (“Surprise! I pretended to not be feeling well enough to go into town with you so I could clean the whole house while you were gone!”), especially after they have kids.

Oh, thank you so much!! That means a lot~ Especially as I’ve been trying to gather the inspiration to update it again, albeit with limited success.

And yeah, the meme’s still open! I can’t for the life of me remember whether I’ve done Kazama before, but if I have, it hasn’t been recently. I’ll go back and check later, and link to it if I have, but for now…

  • How I feel about this character: Everyone knows that.
  • All the people I ship romantically with this character: Just Sen, if you can call that romance.
  • My brOTP for this character: Kazama doesn’t really have what you’d call friends, but I think I’ll say Amagiri, just for the way they interact. They know one another pretty well whether they like it or not, to that point that Amagiri has basically adopted the role of mother. I frankly don’t know where Kazama would be without him.
  • My unpopular opinion about this character: Just the fact that I don’t hate his guts despite how terrible a person he is… that’s probably controversial enough already.
  • One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I can think of more things offhand I wish hadn’t happened, frankly. I’ll say I wish he’d had the opportunity to be a grudging ally in routes other than Heisuke’s and his own, because I really adore his sense of humor.
  • My het ship: KazaSen.
  • My slash ship: None, but if I had to choose, HijiKaza has potential in an AU.
  • My OTP: K A Z A S E N .
  • My OT3: KazaSenChizu, actually. I may still distrust KazaChi, even after KW/EB did their best to change my mind, but Sen always makes everything better. Think about it. Sweet girlfriends affectionately complaining to each other about their shared boyfriend, while also both actively working to reform him, good-cop-bad-cop style?? Beautiful. I should write something about that…
  • A headcanon fact: Not to get too far into my web of Kazama clan headcanons, but I theorize that Kazama has such a contradictory view of power and tradition because of a desire to spite his father (and, symbolically, demon conventions). Despite knowing and accepting his duty, he also resents the restrictions it imposes on his freedom, so he takes it out on those who fight against the inevitable and calls them fools… even as he does the same thing. Similarly, he scorns those who seek power, yet also insists on having control whenever possible. It’s an interesting set of contradictions that I, personally, chose to trace back to his upbringing.

  • How I feel about this character: I LOVE SHINPACHI. Honestly, he’s probably my third favorite character in the whole game after the inevitable Kazama and inescapable Shiranui. I have referred to him multiple times as “precious hotheaded angel”, and his was the route I played first in Shinkai.
  • All the people I ship romantically with this character: Just Chizuru. Unless OCs count, in which case, Chihiro too, since she embodies my own preferences.
  • My brOTP for this character: Harada Sanosuke!!!
  • My unpopular opinion about this character: I’m… not really sure I have one? Like, the general consensus appears to be that he is in fact a good character and significantly less shallow than he appears, so I doubt that would qualify.
  • One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: GIVE ME A MOMENT LIKE HARADA’S FOR GOD’S SAKE!!! That was the chastest damn kiss I’ve ever seen, and we don’t even have any Zuisouroku scenes to balance it out like we do for Saito!!! Fuck.
  • My het ship: Chizuru.
  • My slash ship: Don’t have one. All I know for sure is that I specifically don’t ship him with either of his fellow idiots. Beyond that… I don’t think I’m vehemently opposed to anything, so much as nothing has ever struck me as Specifically Shippable™.
  • My OTP: NagaChi.
  • My OT3: …NagaHaraChi?? As mentioned, I’m kind of reluctant to put him with either Sano or Heisuke, but that seems like the most logical choice for this one somehow.
  • A headcanon fact: Nagakura is mildly ambidextrous. (Inspired by Miyazaki Shuuto being a lefty.)

Ooh, it’s been a very long time since I’ve done this one! Basically since the beginning of the blog, in fact. I wonder if anything’s changed…

  • How I feel about this character: He’s fascinating. There are layers to everything he does, even when he claims otherwise, because so much of his objective and worldview have been sublimated into his behavior. In short, I love him.
  • All the people I ship romantically with this character: Romantically? Just Chizuru. Sexually speaking, I have a very strange and extremely specific soft spot for ModernAU!Sen for some odd reason.
  • My non-romantic OTP for this character: Saito. I don’t think I even need to explain.
  • My unpopular opinion about this character: Apparently, the idea that he’s demiromantic and graysexual doesn’t sit too well with people (or at least hasn’t in the past), because everyone is so madly in love with him that they want him to feel the same way by default, and I just can’t write him like that.
  • One thing I wish would happen/had happened with this character in canon: I’m gonna stick to my earlier answer—I’d have liked some variety of Harada-esque scene by way of consummation, even if not ‘all the way’. Or at least a fade-to-black with some genuine potential behind it.
  • My het ship: OkiChi.
  • My slash ship: Saito. Definitely Saito. I’m not what you’d call an active shipper, but of the guys, Saito is the one I can see most easily with Okita in any way. In my eyes, they’re a better brOTP, but also the most ‘borderline’ friendship either of them have.
  • My OTP: OkiChi.
  • My OT3: Okita/Chizuru/Saito. It’s one of the easiest triangular ships I can visualize in the whole game since I can at least see each branch of it, though I still prefer to relegate polyamory to AUs in the interest of smoothing it out a little.
  • A headcanon fact: Off the top of my head? Aside from my orientation headcanon for him, as mentioned above… Okita could give Yamazaki a run for his money in playing hide-and-seek.

My crossover OTP, huh…? Those two fandoms don’t have a great deal in common, thematically, but as a fan of character analysis regardless of context, I’ll go with:

  • Iba x Fuka: Okay, just… hear me out here. I may dislike both of these characters individually, but they’d work alarmingly well as a unit. Fuka seems to like a sense of romance, even if she doesn’t quite know what to do with it, and Iba is nothing if not romantic. Iba’s arm may make him a little borderline in the bedroom, but we’ve seen that Fuka takes no issue with that. I feel that Iba would appreciate Fuka’s optimism and indulge her boundless curiosity through going on miniature adventures—though of course there’d still be some things he couldn’t say—and that Fuka would appreciate how much Iba would look after and care for her. Yes, I think these two would work very well together indeed.
  • Scarlet x Chizuru: C’mon, it’d be adorable!! Gives me SouChi vibes, really, since he’s innocent but serious and dutiful. Nothing much more to say on this one; I don’t think I need to justify it as strongly, since it seems a little easier to imagine.

S A M E

  • When or if I started shipping it: Early May 2016. Despite it being my OTP now, I didn’t initially consider the thought at length since Heisuke’s was the last route I did. A friend of mine—not the one who got me into Hakuōki—mentioned that she shipped it, so I got curious. She didn’t have to say much; my own imagination did a lot of the legwork in convincing me.
  • My thoughts: Aside from the last 17 pages, this entire blog encapsulates my thoughts pretty handily, so I’ll refrain.
  • What makes me happy about them: They’re such a good and complex ship~
  • What makes me sad about them: The same thing that makes you sad about them. How dare they take that tiny scrap of canon away from us starving beggars?
  • Things done in fanfic that annoy me: When Kazama is the one in charge of the relationship instead of Sen, but honestly, “annoy” is a really strong word since KazaSen content always makes me happy.
  • Things I look for in fanfic: More like “I look for fanfic”. Sometimes, when the fancy strikes me. I don’t read that much since I’m writing a goddamn novel on them myself.
  • Who I’d be comfortable with them ending up with, if not each other: Frankly, for everyone else’s sake, I’d rather Kazama end up alone. OkiSen is a strong contender in a very specific modern-AU context, but as for canon, I legitimately think Chizuru is my second favorite Sen ship. By a long shot, sure, but it’s there.
  • My happily ever after for them: I hate the “learning to love each other” trope, but only because it implies that they just learn to put up with one another’s faults. So my happily-ever-after for them is learning to work together, and then to love each other, changing for the better all the while.
  • Who is the big spoon/little spoon: Kazama is usually the big spoon and Sen the little one, since he likes to ‘own’ and she likes to belong, but it’s not really fixed.
  • What is their favorite non-sexual activity: Arguing. Or… we’ll be generous and call it debating. Honestly, once they actually figure out how to stop trying to kill each other over their differences in opinion all the time, they enjoy swapping perspectives on various topics.

How old are you? Twenty-two and a half, almost exactly.

Are you a people person or a loner? I’m what I refer to as a ‘social introvert’. I’m capable of socializing when I’m in the mood for it, and can in fact come across very lively and even loud, but I most definitely need time on my own to recharge from being around people. And I thoroughly enjoy being alone. I just don’t like isolating.

Do you have any siblings? No, thank gods.

Relationship status? Currently in a friendship with some benefits, but that is by no means exclusive, so I’m not sure whether that counts. I suppose I fall under the category of ‘single’, though so many folks seem to use it as a synonym for ‘looking for someone’ that it feels kinda weird to call myself that.

What is your favorite animal? CATS!!

Have you ever been in love? Not so much the conventional, romantically monogamous definition, no. So even though I’ve loved before, deeply and in many different ways, I don’t know if you could say I’ve been in love. Gotta love those semantics.

Are you active? Not nearly enough so. I do try to get out there and dance on Fridays, but that only works out about a quarter of the time, if that. I really ought to move my body more often, or one of these days it’ll stop moving at all.

What is your biggest pet peeve? Well, that’s a pretty broad question. The last one that came to mind (and it’s super fucking hypocritical of me, let me tell you) is when people reblog ask memes from me without even asking any questions. I’m trying to get better about that myself, and failing miserably.

Are you a hugger? Sometimes, depending on a number of circumstances beyond my control. It’s honestly spin-the-wheel with me. Even if I’m almost completely relaxed around a given person, I still might end up jumpy. It’s best if it’s on my terms.

What are your thoughts on school? It was my first day of the semester today… ugh. Suffice it to say that I’m not really a big fan. I love learning, and in some cases I love my professors and/or the course material, but academic obligations and depressed-anxious executive dysfunction don’t mix well.

Are you okay? My mental condition has improved since a sensitive discussion a few days ago, but my cat is still not doing so hot (we’re honestly amazed he’s even still with us at this point) and school just started, so. I’ve definitely been better. In need of distraction, hence this meme, heh.

What is your guilty pleasure? Some of the things I write, especially if they’re canon-subversive without being explicitly AU. Don’t ask me why I feel such a sense of loyalty to established chronologies. Lately, it’s imagining Dynasty Warriors 9’s Cao Xiu as his cousin’s wife Zhenji’s not-quite-sexual sub, because why the fuck not I guess. It has to do with his vaguely sexual allusions to horse-riding, which reminded me that people whip horses to go faster and Zhenji uses a whip in battle. Just… don’t ask.

Ooh… quite the pair of dramatic romantic comic-relief redheads, huh. I have a couple things in common with each of them, from Impey’s obsession with his projects to Mineo’s love of history, but… I’d say I’d probably find Mineo easier to deal with in a dating context. He’s a tad less insistent than a certain moony vampire, at least. And less touchy in a physical sense. And maybe a little more easily shocked and flustered, which is always a great deal of fun to exploit. Yeah, I think we’d do juuuuuuuust fine.

Nobody’s too background for me! I mean, I might not be able to write essays, but I can safely say that I’d rather date Otori than Motoyama. For one thing, I know more about his personality, and what I’ve seen indicates that we’d be decently compatible. I mean, I’m a sucker for smart people with kind hearts. And also anyone prepared to give the Demon Commander a talking-to, even at the risk of life and limb.

And, um, I think… I’ve joked about nicknaming Miki “Fuck-and-Run”, since I’m more attracted to him than his brother, but uh. Date rape is very much a thing, and where virtue is concerned (either mine or his), I don’t trust him as far as I can throw him. So. Itou. He may still be a snake, but at least he’s a subtler kind of snake.

OH MAN. Compared to the otome around which this blog is centered, that’s kind of a complete non sequitur. But like hell am I going to pass up an opportunity to talk Tales, thank youuuuuuuu~

Anyway, I may adore Zelos, but he needs actual friends way way way more than he needs more hunnies—and besides, I would frankly rather break all my limbs than personally obstruct my literal, actual, all-fandoms-included OTP, which is of course the great, the beautiful, the insurmountable Sheelos/Zeroshii. Thus, my only real choice here is Richard, which is fine by me. Assuming he even swings my way. I confess I have my doubts.

It’s in my mental health instruction manual to keep the canon version of Iba Hachiro as far away from me as fucking possible at all times, thank you. So, even though I’m not attracted to Amagiri, I’ll still take him over Ibahime over there. And gladly. He’s pretty cool.

Definitely Nomura! Not only is Souma about 300% too serious for my tastes, but once again I’ve marked him as an adopted brother instead.
