picking up litter is worth it!!

individual environmentalism gets a lot of flak in the face of corporate pollution but picking up litter makes a significant, noticeable impact. I spend about an hour a week picking up litter from around my dorm complex and I'm literally outpacing my community's litter production. Just an hour a week from one person is enough to offset nearly 200 people's worth of littering.

it would take less than 100 man-hours of labor per week to keep my whole college campus entirely litter-free. If you got two classrooms' worth of people to spend two hours per week each picking up litter, the whole campus would end up spotless and they'd straight up fucking run out of things to pick up.

If you're looking for some way to make a noticeable and positive impact on the world around you, go pick up some litter.

Here's a good video on getting started and what to do. Yes, it's fully legal, just don't trespass on private property. All you need are gloves and a bag.

I've been litter picking in the background of my walks and I've removed several bags of trash from the area. The other day, children were playing in the creek that I litter pick at a lot. They were jumping into the water and swimming, right in the spot where I pulled torn up cans out of the riverbed and where I removed nearly-buried fishing wire that still had hooks on the ends. Just one person with a sharps container made it safer for those kids to go out and have fun.

That was the most direct cause and effect thing I've had with litter picking after just a little while of doing it, but even aside from that it's just. Good to do. It makes your area cleaner and safer and removes plastic from the environment. Plus, people are less likely to litter in clean areas, and litter can not be subconsciously normalized in people's minds in a litter-free area.

It's also fulfilling instant gratification. You get to go out and do something with your hands and then look and see for yourself that an hour or two of picking shit up has made an instant tangible difference in the world.

First of all hard agree on all of this. Every time I go out and pick up litter my mood noticeably skyrockets. The opportunities one encounters in their daily life to make an immediate positive material impact on a social/political issue that concerns them do not come up very often.

But what this post doesn't even mention is the community aspect. Which is possibly my favorite part.

Every single time I go to pick up garbage without fail I have at least one positive interaction with a stranger in my neighborhood. Sometimes small like someone walking past and saying thank you for doing it. But also people sometimes offering to help or even offering a bottle of water. And since I've started doing it I've seen more people in my neighborhood going out with gloves and a bag on a warm evening after school or work. In which case when I see them on my walks I become the kind stranger they meet that day.

So argue all you want about whether picking up litter is actually good for the planet (it is) but there is no question. It is good for your community and it is good for you.

Magnus - Studies

Magnus felt the presence hovering over his shoulder. It waited politely to be acknowledged, the same as every previous visit. The young boy had become use to the sudden arrivals; they had begun the moment Magnus was mature to be aware of his surroundings. The being was familiar and steady, a comfort for the young ward of Prospero to talk with. And the visitor always knew when Magnus needed someone to talk to.

Putting his quill down and setting the papers aside, Magnus closed his eyes, exhaled, and opened his inner eye to engage in conversation with the new arrival.

How are you today? Busy as always, it appears.

“There is much to learn.” He gestured at the rows of books sitting on crystal shelves. “I crave to know as much as possible.”

At such a young age. The voice held a hint of fatherly pride. Tell me, Magnus, and the tone changed, becoming sober. Do you take the time to enjoy the day? I see the weather is quite beautiful outside.

The ruddy skin child shrugged. “So it is. It’s been that way all of last week. I know it will be the same next week. I would much rather be reading this.” Selecting a book close at hand, Magnus held the cover up to where the presence hovered. “I’ve been refused permission to take the manuscripts back to my quarters.”

Why?

A sheepish smile appeared on the precocious’ child’s face. “I sometimes forget that I have the book in my possession.”

The laugh, warm and rich, surprised Magnus. He expected a reprimand.

You act much like one of your brothers.

“I look forward to meeting them, just as I will meet you.” Their conversations, ranging on a variety of topics, always drifted to this. A fixated point in the future where their paths would join, pre-ordained by fate.

Magnus sensed the nod and the smile that came with the unseen action. Reaching out, grasping the gossamer thread that was the psychic link, Magnus traced it across space, back to the benevolent man whose presence lit the library like a candle in the night. He was allowed this one accommodation, a testament to the profound trust established between them, seeing the world through the other’s gaze. The young boy found himself looking out of a porthole into the depths of space, unfamiliar with the constellations and double suns that was at odds with the single star Prospero orbited.

“You are still a fair distance away.”

I will be there in time. There is much work that I have to accomplish.

“I know,” Magnus said simply. He did. He had known early on when he had gazed into the Warp with his mind’s eye, outstripping his teachers and their lessons in scant heartbeats.

I will leave you to your studies. Although, I ask you one thing.

“Yes?” Magnus retreated from the mental bond carefully, pulling his consciousness back into his body. The reflection of another’s face in the porthole glass smiled.

Enjoy the day outside. Leave your studies until tomorrow. The books will be there in the morn.

Drawing away from Magnus, the presence departed. Opening his eyes, the library and its bookcases stared back at Magnus, quiet and still. The sound of lively debate and laughter floated through the air, coming from outside. Chewing his lower lip for a moment, clearly debating, Magnus pushed back his chair and stood. His father was right. It was too nice a day to stay inside.

Kohei Ashiya made some illustrations to pay tribute to the voice of Joseph Joestar, Unsho Ishizuka who had passed away today in one of his latest tweets: Unsho Ishizuka, during post-recording would act as everyone’s mood maker. During the launch party, I shook his hands and said, “Thank you so much for playing best JoJo!” to which he then replied, “Wow! I guess it was worth the yelling, huh!” and laughed. I’ll never forget it.
