What distinctions are necessary to be classed in the animal kingdom as a shark?
Hello~sorry for my late reply~this ask has been in my inbox for a while and I would like to explain it without being too complicated ^^||What is a shark? Generally:1. Sharks are cartilaginous fishes like rays and skates, they have skeletons made of cartilage instead of hard bones.
2. Unlike the bony fishes, sharks have sandpaper-like skin due to the presence of placoid scales. Each scale consists of a pointed tip (directed backward) and looks like a tooth! (Bony fishes have cycloid or ctenoid scales instead)
3. Sharks have 5-7 pair of gill silts behind their heads, while rays and skates have 5 pairs of ventral gill silts (at the bottom of their bodies)
4. Most sharks have sharp teeth in jaws to capture prey, while some species like the whale sharks and the basking sharks have gill rakers to feed on plankton.
Sawfishes (Pristis spp.) look like sharks yet their gill silts are located at the bottom of their bodies, so they are grouped with the rays and skates.
I hope that answered your question~^^
