introduction post

  • i'll never shut up. i hope you find peace
  • big on destiny + tragedy + first overall picks
  • i tag players first and last name, no hyphens, no diacritics. i tag teams for either my original content or if a post has the vibes of or specifically discusses a team. my 1634 tag is "get soulbonded about it!" and my art tag is "the cody art tag" . i don't trigger tag (although you can ask!) and there will be (minimal but present) content that discusses sa/hockey culture. be advised
  • feel free to request a tarot reading about the future of your team. as vague or specific as you like. it's fun and it might even be true
  • i am not here to get mad on the internet about minutiae or drama. i am here for fun. sometimes that fun involves getting mad about minutiae because i am a bit of a hater though
  • please be polite!
  • i sell hats. like knitted hats! dm me if you want to buy one (75$ plus shippin') or a pattern (5$)
  • send in your gossip i'm NOSY
  • rip capfriendly. here is a link to a gdrive with their FAQ pages copied.
  • blue jays and sceptres enjoyer
  • leafs number 1 best in the world forever. other opinions subject to variation but generally pro lightning-stars-red wings-caps-flyers-hawks-cmd97. you can follow if you support any team(s) but i am telling you in advance my opinion of those teams may not be favourable

Rasmus Dahlin is a first overall pick. This means he was drafted when the Buffalo Sabres were terrible. This was six years ago. How did other first overall picks fare in this timeslot?

Well, Hughes and Hischier made the playoffs. Only once, and they've had a couple unlucky seasons, but they've done it. Lafreniere made the playoffs more than once; the Rangers shouldn't count if you want my actual opinion, but that's neither here nor there. Slafkovsky was a weak draft year, but he and the Habs both are at least going somewhere. Bedard's Blackhawks started their rebuild with him, but this was last year. They're tracking upwards. Celebrini might make the jump as soon as next year.

Dahlin was supposed to be the last piece. Before him, Eichel. No -- Ryan O'Reilly. No -- Jeff Skinner. Sam Reinhart. A million before him, all of whom have moved on. Most of whom have won the Cup, while he has yet to even sniff the playoffs. Rasmus Dahlin is the longest-tenured Buffalo Sabre, and he is twenty-four years old.

You can see this in his attitude -- he feels like he's holding back abject fury at every step. He's awkward and prone to temper (from scrapping with Matthews at the Heritage Classic to fighting his own teammate as a newly minted captain) and easily frustrated. It is the anger of being left behind.

My most problematic exclusionary unclebrained sports fan take is that you should have a Main. You can love everyone else according to a precise list or hate them all in equal measure, or have an inner circle you would die for, or only like your Team because one player is on it or whatever, but there should be one group of guys that, in every one of those thirty-one possible matchups you have, you want to win.

I regret to tell you guys but I am still thinking about the Extremely Chaste Mitch Marner Underwear Ad

blusical

you cant just say that and not send a link to it

This is the MOST revealing image from the ad. In every other photo of him you cannot even see the underwear.

Chart with two axes with which to organize hockeys: the Seguin-Marner scale and the Tkachuk-Bedard scale. The Tkachuk-Bedard scale is ease on camera; we're talking Matthew here for one end, but Brady's pretty far up that side too. Seguin-Marner seems to be awareness of their own charisma/appeal -- Seguin thinks he's hot to a cartoonish extent, Marner is literally fully clothed for an underwear photoshoot.

Marner/Bedard: A shocking amount of hockeys. Most hockeys, arguably. Nathan MacKinnon, certainly. For men who are filmed for a living, they certainly have no idea what to do on camera.

Marner/Tkachuk: Someone affable and fun, but totally unaware of the contingent who wants to see them in lingerie. Marner himself is in here on a good night. Kopi is very comfy with a mic but extremely Married Dad. Alex Lyon is firmly in this category as well.

Seguin/Tkachuk: Now these are the ones with real spice to them. Seguin and Tkachuk both reside in this quadrant, just with different strengths. Juraj Slafkovsky is a young contender for a place in the corner. Ovechkin. Pastrnak. William Nylander. Smile at the camera and wink at it too.

Seguin/Bedard: J Hughes

I feel like the people that think Auston is going to beat Ovi and Gretzky are fundamentally misunderstanding what is so impressive about Ovi. Like, the whole thing that’s crazy and is enabling him to be on track to beat Gretzky is unprecedented consistency and durability. You can’t just go “assuming consistency” when discussing Auston as though that’s not the extremely special quality. (I do think he’ll be able to get 70 at some point though)

ding ding ding! Auston has a higher peak than Ovi, but he's already known to be fragile -- I shrimply do not imagine him on pace for 55 goals at 39 entire years of age. If he is, I will be thrilled, but he won't be!
