He tilted his head with a worried look in his eyes. He just couldn't get his mind off of you. Something felt off, and his heart couldn't rest a single bit.
He gave you another call, waiting for you to pick it up. Vernon could hear his heartbeat pounding out of his chest as he waited for you to pick up the phone.
“Hello?” Your voice replied through the reciever. Vernon gave a relieved sigh.
“Why weren't you answering?” He asked, finally able to walk with a destination instead of just pacing back and forth.
“I didn't take my phone with me in the bathroom.” You replied on the other end. Vernon let out another breath of relief.
“So I wanted to ask you something, you know that hat store we went to last summer? I wanted to know what the name of it was again?” Vernon asked, walking to his bedroom and putting on a pair of socks.
“I'm not sure about the name, but I think it was nearby that row of shops. It was right next to that restaurant we went to...”
Vernon gave a small chuckle, his phone pressed against his shoulder and ear. “We've gone to so many restaurants though?”
“Right…” Vernon finished putting on his socks and took his phone into his hand, still pressed against his ear.
“Maybe- I think... I think it was by the Italian restaurant.” Vernon listened to your voice. He went silent. Your voice seemed so tired, empty, and emotionless. Your voice, made him feel a sharp pain shoot through his chest.
“Hey… are you okay?”
-
Those words that you were waiting to hear pierced through you like a knife. Your eyes and throat began to fill with tears, as you tried to keep it in.
You covered your mouth with your hands, sitting against the wall with your knees up to your chest and your phone on speaker. The room was completely dark with the curtains drawn, blocking out the light. Yet, even a little bit of light broke through those drawn curtains.
Tears began to fall uncontrollably.
“Are you okay? Are you there?” You could hear Vernon ask. “I'll come over. Don't hang up, please. Please don't hang up.”
You didn't even have the strength to reach for your phone and press the END CALL button. You were too busy battling the painful and cruel loneliness that was building inside your nearing empty and lifeless body. Everywhere just felt numb. You didn't know how long you were waiting because like always, you lost track of time; through all that time you waited, you just wanted desperately for someone to share their warm embrace with you. If someone didn't hug you, or talk with you, you knew you would completely lose it, screaming and crying with the biggest pain you could bare.
Then, you could hear the small beeps of someone entering the passcode to your apartment. After that, the little click of the door unlocking.
“Y/N?” It was Vernon's voice. His voice was filled with worry and possibly even frustration.
Sitting in a lonely corner, you saw Vernon approach the doorway to your bedroom. Upon spotting you, he ran. He ran to you immediately, cradling you into his arms like it was the last day you two would ever see each other.
The feeling of his comforting embrace seemed dlik it could save the world. With his hand carressing the back of your head ever so gently, you just cried. You cried in his chest, you cried everything out, desperately wanting and wishing for it to all just go.
“I hate it!”
He just held you closely, not wanting to let you go.
“I hate being alone!”
Vernon just wanted to hold you. He was afraid that you were going to be a butterfly, flying away the moment he lets you go. At the same time, he was afraid that the world would break your fragile wings.
“I hate that I always cry alone just to feel emotionless after!”
He patted your back, where no wings were found.
“I hate that I don't know why I'm going through all this!”
Vernon just let you cry. On such a bright and sunny day, the apartment was filled with darkness. Vernon didn't want to see any light or darkness, so he just held onto you tight.
“I hate all of that too. I hate that it's all happening to you who's just trying to live a life.” Vernon said, his voice immediately calming. It had been so long since you heard some words of comfort. “I'm sorry I didn't realize it. I'm sorry I didn't notice your pain sooner.”
Though his voice was calm, it was like the missing pieces of your life had finally collide. The emptiness and loneliness inside was gone temporarily.
You held Vernon closer, desperate.
“Please save me, please save me.”
With a soft breath, Vernon leaned back against the side of your bed, holding you tightly.
