What TV writers think is good LGBT representation: *protagonist teary eyed* My attraction to the same gender is so painful I wish I did not feel this way…but alas it’s my burden to bear. Also I have dated both men and women but I don’t like labels. *dies* What is actually good LGBT representation: *protagonist wearing sunglasses playing the saxophone in front of a giant bisexual flag* How am I doing? Well I’m just getting BI!!! Haha get it?? Because I like both men and women so I’m bisexual.

I agree, all men should learn about women’s sexuality by reading My Immortal.

Hi friend! Foz here. Just a couple of points:

-  I’ve specified good fanfiction in literally the first tweet. While this is, obviously, a value judgement wherein YMMV, My Immortal is famous for being arguably the most terrible fanfic ever written, and is therefore demonstrably not what I’m talking about. Similarly, I’ve seen other responses to this post bring up 50 Shades, which, despite its popularity in mainstream circles, is pretty much universally regarded as being not just terrible fanfic, but an excruciatingly bad and dangerously inaccurate portrayal of BDSM that romanticises abuse. So no: these are not the droids you’re looking for.

- Here’s the thing, though: you already knew that. The decision to respond to this post with a flippant reference to a fic that’s notorious precisely because of its poor quality is exactly why I used up precious Twitter characters to specify good fanfic, even though I shouldn’t have had to. Every mode of artistic expression is composed of good, bad and mediocre works, but when it comes to genres that are traditionally viewed as less worthy or literary - like fanfiction, or romance - we have a reflexive tendency to conflate the bad with the whole, such that the good is implied to be either exceptional or nonexistant. I specified that I’m talking about good fanfiction, not because I think such fics are an exalted minority, but to pre-emptively combat the assertion that they are, and then you’ve gone and made it anyway. So, thanks for that.

- But while we’re on the subject of quality, let’s make a very important distinction. Though fanfic is a largely unmediated medium, it’s not bad; it’s amateur, in the very literal, dictionary-definition sense of engaging or engaged in without payment; non-professional. While there’s a stereotype that lots of ficwriters are teenage girls - which, why is that always wielded as an insult? oh right, misogyny, carry on - a lot of us are, in fact, grown-ass adults of varying genders, some of whom also happen to write professionally in other contexts; like me, for instance. I’ve read fanfics that are unquestionably as good as, if not better than, many professionally published works I’ve read, some I’ve simply enjoyed or felt meh about, and others where I’ve mounted up on my Nopetopus and ridden off into the sunset after the first paragraph. It’s a grab bag, is what I’m saying, but if you think that’s an inherently different spectrum of enjoyment over quality than applies to any other medium, then I’d politely invite you to reconsider the matter.

- In conclusion: fanfic might not be your bag, but it has its own culture of editing, collaboration, publication, criticism and dissemination, its own conventions and subversions of same, its own extensive history and trope awareness, and, yes, its near-unique status as a medium invested in female sexual desire. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other things straight dudes can do to learn the mystical ways of What Women Want like, oh, say, talking to them, always bearing in mind that women are not a goddamn hivemind, but given that there are a frightening number of guys out there whose first or primary exposure to any type of porn is whatever degrading mainstream het they can scrouge up for free without virusing the hell out of their PCs, then yeah: I’m gonna go out on a fucking limb and suggest they maybe balance it out with some fanfic.

This might be the best summary of the power of fan fiction and its inherent lessons about women’s sexuality that I’ve ever seen.

And if you look to your left you’ll see a well written, well thought out piece “In Defence of Fanfiction”.

Fanfiction was basically my porn back in the days. Now I have a confirmation as to why that was.

hey there LGBTQ kids who are also Christian/Jewish! If you feel like you’re disobeying God, questioning your faith, or feel wrong and dirty for loving who you love, there’s this fantastic site I found today called hoperemains that accurately and thoroughly combs through scripture and its (many) mistranslations, validates your orientation, and basically let’s you know that you’re not pissing off God. Shoutout to hypersexual sapphic women, sapphic women with a high libido, aro sapphic women, sapphic women who enjoy having casual sex with one or more partners, and sapphic women who frequently pleasure themselves.

You’re not dirty.  It doesn’t matter if you think your hypersexuality might have been caused by something in your life, or if you don’t know the cause at all.  Being sexual or hypersexual doesn’t mean you’re objectifying other women.  You’re not predatory.  You’re not perpetuating the stereotype that all sapphic women only love women in the form of sex as a performance for men.

It’s okay that the way you love women happens to involve a lot of physical attraction and/or intimacy. Your love for women isn’t worth any less than anyone else’s.  You’re allowed to be sexually attracted to women and to act on that attraction.

Because, you know, physical intimacy between women is pretty wonderful and beautiful and great.

Ancient moon priestesses were called virgins. ‘Virgin’ meant not married, not belonging to a man - a woman who was ‘one-in-herself’. The very word derives from a Latin root meaning strength, force, skill; and was later applied to men: virle. Ishtar, Diana, Astarte, Isis were all all called virgin, which did not refer to sexual chastity, but sexual independence. And all great culture heroes of the past, mythic or historic, were said to be born of virgin mothers: Marduk, Gilgamesh, Buddha, Osiris, Dionysus, Genghis Khan, Jesus - they were all affirmed as sons of the Great Mother, of the Original One, their worldly power deriving from her. When the Hebrews used the word, and in the original Aramaic, it meant ‘maiden’ or ‘young woman’, with no connotations to sexual chastity. But later Christian translators could not conceive of the ‘Virgin Mary’ as a woman of independent sexuality, needless to say; they distorted the meaning into sexually pure, chaste, never touched. —Monica Sjoo

I believe we need the whole “I want to kiss her and hold her hand under the moon uwu soft moon lesbian” thing, especially for young wlw, like it’s so important, but we also live in a world where girls who like girls are either hypersexualed and fetishized by men/porn or completely desexualized to the point where the world is convinced that older lesbians don’t have sex lives.

So here’s some positivity for all young wlw:

It’s okay to fantasize sexually about girls. It’s okay to get off thinking about girls. It’s okay to check girls out. It’s okay to have sex with girls, however many you want. It’s okay to want a girl to give you an orgasm, and it’s okay to want to give girls orgasms.

Wanting this doesn’t make your attraction any less soft or innocent because there is nothing dirty, bad, or perverse about being sexually attracted to other girls. You can make her a flower crown while the sun sets and count her freckles and then go home and go down on her for an hour. The two aren’t mutually exclusive.

And if you’re an older woman who struggles with this too, it applies for you as well.

before you make a joke about bela sleeping with anyone and everyone let me introduce you to a thing called canon

  • Merrill: You’ve had many lovers, haven’t you?
  • Isabela: Fewer than some think.

amazing

I’ll add Zevran:

  • Alistair: Fair enough. Have you… had very many women in your time? I mean… you seem like the sort of man who would…
  • Zevran: I have indulged from time to time, perhaps, when my interest is not elsewhere.

When these two are serious you get a slightly different view of them. They are not always having sex. They have other things that they have to get done. They have other things going on in their lives that means they can’t be the sex-obsessed characters they often get portrayed as.

They have had a lot of lovers. They enjoy sex. They will joke about it, flirt and use their comfort with sex to their advantage (Zev’s bosom banter to distract Wynne) but they are not uncontrollable nymphomaniacs or sexual predators or incurably horny.

The problem is ours, not theirs. We have this simple-minded paradigm where people exist on a spectrum between “pure” and slut and where you fall is defined by how tainted you are by sex. If you act as if there’s no such thing, you’re pure. If you dress, talk, act in a way that reminds others of sex or, God forbid, actually have it with any frequency (and with different people), you’re on the slut end.

Zevran and Isabella aren’t sluts. They have a healthy respect for sex. Zevran is concerned with consent (sometimes, asking him to your tent is a game of “Are you sure? Really, really sure?” from him) and skill  (“My only rule regarding sex, is that it be done well”). Isabella understands it’s power as a tool (Seneschal Bran) and a gift (Fenris). They don’t measure the worth of themselves or others by how often or infrequently they have sex. And when they aren’t having sex, they aren’t having sex. They’re sailing ships or fighting a Blight or helping friends or giving astute advice on politics.

If all we see is sex when we look at these two, the obsession is ours, not theirs.

An old post, but can we also talk about how the one time Hawke treats Isabela like this and tries to set her up with Du Launcet she defends herself? She doesn’t need your help Hawke and she isn’t going to sleep with anyone under the sun so fuck off.

Like seriously, Isabela simply appreciates sex for what it is and what more she is able to separate sex as it’s own. As in sex =/= love and love =/= sex, it’s consensual fun and release and Idk I just love that canonically Isabela has an open relationship with Hawke because she (and Hawke) knows sex isn’t an all holy expression of love.

Which Zevran is the exact same too, though he doesn’t have an open relationship with the Warden. His romance doesn’t “end” when you sleep with him, because sex is not a goal, it’s not the goal. Their romances continue on and in the end its the smaller affections, the smaller gestures that end their romance with I Love You.
