I’m having thoughts that I felt I ought to jot down. Now this isn't to say that I want all sorts of hard-hitting angst or whatnot in BHC's full release because I'm hoping that the game will be a generally relaxing and fun time. But I do so dearly hope that Poplar's representation of the disabled experience is a Real one. I hope the cane isn’t a “token” if that makes sense.
I hope we get to hear something, even something brief, about his journey -- how he tackles chronic pain, or a mention of a compromise he has to make so cooking or working will be easier (cause cooking while trying to stay steady on a cane can be rough, trust me). A symptom of his condition that no one talks about, or maybe even how he deflects or copes with ableism. Because mobility aids do help, but they don't cover everything. They are a visual indication of a story, but there is always more to know. A disabled person’s form of the mundane can be vastly different from abled people around them.
I would love to see our community's experiences validated and acknowledged, even if in only a few lines of dialogue here and there or in the way the dates with Poplar go -- a sit-down date rather than going out. A pause in the conversation for mealtime medication. Something that we know and feel to be Real.
