To expand a bit (and I invite you to listen to the podcast. Great interview.) Jensen explained that he didn't like the finale when it was first pitched to them by the writers. He thought it would either be Sam dying as a martyr (Swan Song like) & Dean stumbling through the rest of his life mourning his brother, or both of them going out like Butch & Sundance. So he called Kripke, who knew the SPN world the best but who wasn't as close to it as Jensen (having left the show a long time ago). Kripke sent him a long email the next day explaining why Dean dying and Sam going on with his life made sense, from a storyline POV. After reading it, Jensen said he was on board with it.
