On This Day in 1942 - the Battle of El Alamein began. It would last until July 27, 1942. The battle was fought in the deserts of North Africa between the Axis (Germany and Italy) and British Imperial Forces. The Allied victory here stopped the Axis powers from advancing further into Africa and the Germans surrendered in North Africa in May 1943. For more details on the battle, visit this site.
