Whedon, commenting on the relationship between Faith and Buffy from Season Three of Buffy on, has said that it was when fan-fiction writers and fan commentators saw an element of sexual obsession in the younger Slayer’s jealousy of the older one that he and the other writers looked again at what they had already written, and what Eliza Dushku and Sarah Michelle Gellar had acted on-screen, and realized that the fannish interpretation made sense.
