The future is not yet decided
some excerpts from heather havrilesky/ask polly's books and columns that snap me out of uselessly longing and obsessing over romantic love:
- 'let's try this: if i told you that you would never, ever fall in love again, what kind of plan would you make to ensure your own happiness moving forward? what would you work toward? what would you do more of?'
- 'you need to begin by painting a picture that doesn't include love. you need to stop making room in your life for someone else's love and start making room for yourself instead. [...] when you can imagine a beautiful life even in the absence of romantic love, finding love or losing it again won't seem nearly as scary.'
- 'you must break this fixation on love as the cure all to all of your ills. if you found love right now, you would run it straight to the ground in seconds. you need an outward focus that has nothing to do with guys.'
- 'it's time to forget about being lovable. and in fact, it's time to forsake someone else's idea of what gives you a spark or no spark. block the "other" from this picture. no more audience.'
- 'the central challenge in your life is not finding people who will support you and love you. the central challenge in your life is you finding a way to give yourself support and love. you need to shift your concentration away from this imaginary hole in your life, and shift it towards bigger projects that will feed and sustain you over the course of a lifetime.'

horror but make it healing
what i mean is: the house that hates you because it hates all of humanity because it is old, and abandoned, and left to rot. the house that tries to kill you because it doesn't care what you intend or what you want and all it knows is that its purpose has gone ignored and then has changed, by degrees, with malicious intent derived from neglect. a house that sees you as threat and will not wait for you to draw first blood - or worse, to just... ignore it more. again. forever.
but also; what does it look like to meet that house halfway and work to better it. can you renovate it? can you find the hurt and heal it? is it Horror if it can be Fixed? but not fixed like it never happened, but fixed like we reinforced the crack in the east wall of the foundation, we re-bricked the fireplace with respect to its original style, we found the rot and - as gently as possible - removed it, grafted new tissue, applied bandages. can you rehabilitate a haunted house, and offer it love? or is it prideful to even try - because all you're doing is setting it up for more failure and heartbreak in the future, after you die and it goes uncared for, neglected, again?
can you make a house that hates you love you without ensuring that it will hate again after you - because a house lives a long, long time after a human dies?
a couple of tumblr functions if you didn’t know about them:
- you can make tags on an individual blog display from the earliest to latest post by adding /chrono to the end, for example: http://gameofgifs.tumblr.com/tagged/season_202/chrono
- you can search through a tumblog by date using “http://username.tumblr.com/day/YEAR/MONTH/DAY”, for example: http://gameofgifs.tumblr.com/day/2012/09/16
- you can view just the photo posts on your dashboard in mosaic form by going to http://www.tumblr.com/photos
- you can save ask messages to your queue or drafts by hovering your mouse over the publish button and holding down “alt”, which will bring up alternative options
- by using the url “http://www.tumblr.com/show/type of post” you can filter your dash, for example “http://www.tumblr.com/show/photos” will show only photos
- you can retrieve previously used themes via the theme recovery page: http://www.tumblr.com/themes/recover
- when reblogging a long text post (like this one!), click on the “as” at the top of the post to reblog as a text post, link or quote
