How do you know all these magical creatures? Where do you look them up?

I have a very large collection of reference materials in 2 languages that I started building in my childhood. See, my mom was a librarian, and as soon as I got a slight inclination for something thanks to tv or school, she would indulge. In 3rd grade, I had a teacher that read us bits of the Odyssey at every reading period until we got thru the whole quest, which got me into mythology, so my mom got me into kid’s series like this one :

Which were actually really well researched, featured international tales, and had CRAZY GOOD illustrations, so tiny baby Isa got into that reaaaaaal deep and real fast and read every book and magazine article her little heart could find and kept a couple making huge collages that said “one day i’m gonna marry Galahad and be a lady knight” because I was cool that way.

These days, I actually find a ton of reference materials online. Using Wikipedia (no, for real) as a starting point, you can find links to various university research papers on Witchcraft and Mythology, as well as published books. Because Wiki pages have references at the bottom. One can also not under estimate the content of the wiki page itself because people love magic, love writing about magic and history, and love to get the facts right about. Heck, here on tumblr, i’ve come across some pretty solid fairy tale analysis that I copy pasted to keep for the ages. There’s fairy tale blogs too - Sur la Lune (http://www.surlalunefairytales.com/) has a newsletter too.

Most universities have pretty big mythology sections - digitized, archived and in the permanent collection - as well as classes, because as stated before, people LOVE magic and history. And most universities, you can get a library card pretty easy as a citizen, alumni or student.

Finally - I like to ask questions. As soon as someone mentions they love a tale I don’t know I slide int here hot and fast with a list of questions.

Long story short, there’s a lot of ways to find magical stories, and you can do it comfortably from your home nest or out in the world - cuz we magic loving folks suuuure love to talk about magic. Always. All the time. I ask people to send me their papers all the time.

I also make up a lot of shit. Not all these critters I use are real.

I colored my "Lovers who can't look" piece inspired by the mythological characters of Medusa and Perseus. The lineart inspired a few folks. I really wanted to share my favorites...

By itjustgenetics : The closer he got, the louder each hiss was. She hesitated, pulling away as his hand gripped the small of her back pushing himself into the venomous latching bites across his collar bone. ” I want you,” his weak words slipped from his lips as his heart rate slowed, the venom raced through him. She stared in terror and disbelief thinking, “so this is what real love feels like?” Eyes beaming at his bruising lips she pressed against them. The space so empty that occupied her chest permeated a pain she’d never felt. Nothing more but a simple kiss was exchanged. His eyelids fighting to grasp one another let go of their grip, separating just enough to get a final glimpse of … her. His lips escaped hers with the last breathy words, ” So beautiful…” his body molded to hers, fermenting into the statuesque limestone, exemplifying the love he had for her. She slides out of his arms once more. It was all but a memory.

Shaggykorean : i love how his eyes are closed in a kiss, and hers are like a little bird that’s not quite sure if it’s safe to land here.  breath taking…

nothing worth having comes without some kind of fight
got to kick at the darkness ‘til it bleeds daylight

Ran off with some of secondlina's monstrously cute lineart for coloring practice, mostly because a) her lineart is always freaking amazing and b) omg I have wanted Medusa/Perseus to be a thing like my entire adult life, okay, get out of my brain

Hello everyone!

The kickstarter for the second book of the Namesake webcomic is now live.

I’m incredibly excited. And nervous.

This comic is absolutely quality and if you like the sound of the following description you should really check it out:

Namesake is the story of Emma Crewe, a woman who discovers she can visit other worlds. She finds out that these are places she already knows – fantasy and fairy lands made famous through the spoken word, literature and cinema. Her power as a Namesake forces her to act as a protagonist in these familiar stories as she figures out how to get home.
But as she travels, she discovers that those controlling her story have their own selfish goals in mind – and her fate is the key to everyone’s happy ending.
Join Emma, her sister Elaine and their friends as they tumble down the rabbit hole.
If you like, adventure, humor, stories of friendship, fairy tales and fantasy, this is the webcomic for you.

The art is beautiful, the writing is very well paced and it has the right balance of humour and drama while still being a rather serious story.

Reblogging to remind folks that the kickstarter is still running (and also to share that the people who have reblogged us already are sweeties!)
