I’ve always felt the core role of this blog has been one of information. We make a lot of choices in design, and I try to use my various communications, including Blogatog, to walk the players through what we were thinking when we made key decisions.

The challenge with this approach is that it’s very logic-focused. It uses intellectual justifications to explain actions. But the problems I’m often responding to are emotional in origin. I have a good friend who’s a psychologist. He refers to this (using the words of author Robyn Gobbel) as an owl brain solution to a watchdog brain problem.

When someone is hurting, hearing about why the thing that is causing them pain is the result of intellectual decisions falls flat. That’s what has been causing some tension lately here on Blogatog.

It’s clear that for some Question Marks changes over the last few years represent the loss of something key to what makes Magic special to them. To them, the game is losing its heart.

While I can’t necessarily do anything about that, I want to better understand what you’re going through. So I’m using this post to ask players who are concerned with the recent changes to help me understand their feelings. Let me hear your stories about how your lives have been affected by these changes.

Hi, Mark, I am a long time follower, and I love when you reach out.

This is echoing both my irl friend group and some online forums I attend:

In terms of flavour, the game is suffering from a dillution from the strange and fantastical origins of itself. It feels like a marvel movie, getting less and less fantastical and more and more mundane. Bloomburrow was a step in the right direction imideately undone by Duskmorne, which in my opinion despite conceptualy sounding interesting was the pinacle of "world of funny hats". It's Dead by Daylight: the plane. Seeing that the next original sets not!Hotwheels Accelaracers, Skyrim but in Tarkir and SPACE! does not fill us with hope.

It also ties well to the next concern. I was a universes beyond hater from day one. I was baffled by the choices made in regards to franchises and how they were adapted, and I have a personal rule to not run a single universes beyond card. I am alone in this among my friend group though, but even them started noticing the sameyness of it all, how many of the franchises are either poor matches for magic (warhammer 40k with no raymond swanland art???), just normalish people in the real world (jurassic park, assassin's creed) or both (Doctor Who).

The last is one that has been repeated so much that it won't get a big paragraph: Commander rules over magic. I enjoy commander so its not that big of a deal. I am a gambler at heart so the problem of chasing cards is not so much a downside for me, as it is for my friends.

As a final all encapsulating anecdote, after the 2025 announcements, my friend group all joked about how the "Infinity Gauntlet" card that is ineviteably going to be made, is going to be the next "One Ring", but it does touch every problem: Magic losing space, the beyond getting bloated, and all on the back of people's enjoyment of competition.

The Yellow Switch Palace level in Super Mario World starts off with a large empty room, which becomes completely filled with coins once Mario presses a P-Switch. However, the switch's timer runs out way before it is possible to collect every coin, leading to many players perceiving this as unsatisfying.

Due to an oversight in the code, Yoshi can eat a P-Switch a few frames after it has been pressed, and it will be reset to its original state when it is spat out. Using this to press the switch several times, it is in fact possible to completely clear the room of all coins, as shown in the footage.
