Ah yes…a Tiger Shark
Get out.
In India’s Thar Desert, nomads rely so much on camels for survival that the animals are revered. Livestock owners take great pride in their camels, carving intricate patterns in their fur.
I’M ACTUALLY SO GLAD THAT THIS POST IS GETTING REBLOGGED A LOT BECAUSE I’VE HAD THIS IN MY QUEUE FOR WEEKS AND I’VE BEEN SO EXCITED FOR PEOPLE TO SEE IT BECAUSE WHEN I FOUND OUT ABOUT THIS I THOUGHT IT WAS BASICALLY THE COOLEST THING EVER

You can’t just post this without the context!!! This is a deep sea “pram bug,” probably a female. The gelatinous barrel she’s hanging from used to be a salp, a swimming relative of sea squirts. She catches the salp, eats all the innards, cuts the ends off and uses its corpse as a little vehicle she drives around with her paddles. She pulls prey inside as needed, and when a small male joins her, she’ll raise her babies in it.
Octopus restoration may be a labor intensive process, but the results often look incredible. I purchase the octopus frozen from a local bait shop and work with them to restore the appearance of the chromatophores in the skin to a life like appearance. It’s a difficult and labor intensive process that takes about two hours per individual. After setting for another week, they are ready to be shipped out to other specimen preparators, jarred, or embedded in glass or resin. (Yes I do sell them from time to time, pm me if you are interested.) INSTAGRAM / FACEBOOK / ETSY

For anyone not so familiar with cat behavior, this cat is out of its mind excited to do this. It’s much more rare for cars to wag their tails but it means the same as it does when a dog does it. This cat is curious and proud and playing. It keeps looking at its owner too, like “LOOK AT ME, DAD” and it’s so rare to get videos of cats this happy. This is fucking rad
Nope.. wagging tails means anger or irritation in cat body language.
hey y’all, hope you don’t mind me stepping in!
you’re both right :) a wagging tail means the cat is highly stimulated (think coiled spring, ready to go off). depending on the situation, this can be interpreted differently - just like people can smile nervously at job interviews vs. happily grin at friends.
in most cases, it’s safe to interpret overstimulation as ‘you’re doing something to amp up the cat & it wants you to stop’ (ex. unwanted petting). it should be seen as a warning; all that pent-up energy COULD be released as a swat or bite.
BUT in this case, that tail-wagging ‘frustration’ is the stimulation that comes from problem-solving (where can I jump? is it safe to go here?) and the excitement of play. it’s good to be wary of ‘cute’ animals vids, but this seems like an unproblematic video!
I’d like to add to this–just look at world-famous box-loving cat, Maru, who wags his tail every time he stuffs his body into a box or other small object. He’s clearly not about to attack the person behind the camera! It’s definitely based on stimulation, but more to the point of “ahhh FINALLY I’ve gotten into the small space, now how do I get the rest of me inside”:
i love everything about cats ever always
wombat riding turtle
the animal kingdom is a strange and beautiful place
Yeah, that’s one of my weird pseudo-suction-cup-footed babies on top of some species of tortoise. Hyrax will climb on anything.
Suction cup foot? On a mammal?
Sort of! Hence the psuedo. This is a rock hyrax foot:
See how there’s that depression in the center? They can actually use the muscles in their foot to retract that part of the pad while keeping the rest of the edges of the foot in contact with whatever they’re standing on. Hyrax feet sweat to help keep them too, and the combination of the sweat and the flexible center of the paw pad ends up creating a structure that creates a tiny bit of suction when they’re standing on rocks or other smooth surfaces. Hence, psuedo-suction-cups!

Cuttlefish pretending to be a hermit crab
Cuttlefish have such an incredible capacity for mimicry that isn’t talked about enough. Not only can they pretend to be a different sex in order to get sneaky matings with females who are already being guarded by a male, and change their skin color for camouflage, now they’re apparently pretending to be crabs.
What’s interesting is that when I went to look up pharoah cuttlefish mimicry, the only result I got was this behavior that potentially looks like hermit crab mimicry (the paper on it wouldn’t confirm for sure that’s what the behavior was, just that it seems likely) I couldn’t find evidence of cuttlefish mimicking any other species. So it’s just hermit crabs, I guess.
It’s fursona is a hermit crab.
I like how the two cuttlefish pretending to be hermit crabs make eye contact and guiltily revert back to normal. Like:
Crab crab crab Crab crab crab Crab-oh. ..uh…hi Larry Hi Bernice. Uh…sure is some. ..water in this tank.
