A new look at the critters known as “Elvis worms” has the scale worm family all shook up.

These deep-sea dwellers flaunt glittery, iridescent scales reminiscent of the sequins on Elvis’ iconic jumpsuits (SN: 1/23/20). “For a while, we thought there was just one kind of Elvis worm,” says Greg Rouse, a marine biologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif. But analysis of the creatures’ genetic makeup shows that Elvis worms comprise four species of scale worm, Rouse and colleagues report May 12 in ZooKeys.

Rouse’s team compared the genetic material of different Elvis worms with each other, and with DNA from other scale worm species. This analysis places Elvis worms in the Peinaleopolynoe genus of scale worms, which includes two other known species — one found off the coast of Spain, the other off California.

A new genetic analysis of the deep-sea creatures nicknamed “Elvis worms” reveals that that these iridescent creatures include four separate species. The Elvis worms seen in this video belong to the species Peinaleopolynoe orphanae, which mostly sport glittery blue scales, but also come in other colors, like black and red. These worms may look dainty, but they fight dirty, chomping at each other’s scales when they get into skirmishes.

The four newly identified Elvis worm species are scattered across the Pacific, from P. elvisi and P. goffrediae in Monterey Canyon off California to P. orphanae in the Gulf of California by Mexico and P. mineoi near Costa Rica.

These deep-sea Elvis impersonators share some common traits, such as nine pairs of scales. But each species has its own distinct flare. P. elvisi’s gold and pink iridescent color scheme earned it the honor of keeping the worms’ namesake in its official title. P. orphanae, on the other hand, mostly sports rainbow-sparkled scales of a bluish hue.

The researchers don’t know why Elvis worms have evolved such eye-catching scales, since the animals live in the dark, deep sea. It could just be a side effect of developing thicker scales over time, which happen to refract more light, Rouse says. Thicker scales could come in handy in a fight, since Elvis worms are apparently biters, a behavior discovered while watching a worm skirmish. “Suddenly, they started doing this amazing jitterbugging — wiggling, and then fighting and biting each other” on their scales, Rouse says. “No one’s ever seen any behavior like this in scale worms.”

Shout out to acclaimed horror mangaka Junji Ito for writing a cute slice of life comedy about competing with his wife for the affection of his two cats and REFUSING to change his eerie, body-horror-filled, vertigo-inducing art style at all for its entire duration

Assorted thoughts about Godzilla movies and such.

-Godzilla 1998/GINO/Zilla is often alleged to be a mutated marine iguana, as implied by the opening of the film, but another candidate could be a Hydrosaurus pustulatus, or sailfin lizard. Much like a marine iguanas it is aquatic but it’s also partially carnivorous and is native to a location that is about as far from French Polynesia as the marine iguana is, for what it’s worth. Also they can have a coloration very similar to Godzilla 1998.

Hmm…

They also are semi-bipedal (like the basilisk lizard) and omnivorous.

A bit more dynamic and active than marine iguana’s as well.

However, marine iguana’s may still have played a role in design since I’m aware a video of one swimming underwater was popular to creature designers in hollywood for a while. The swimming alien in Alien Ressurection was also inpired by that apparently

I wonder if they used the same ‘swimming creature’ animation rig for both movies.

seems that Chrome has around 60-65% market share, so it’s not totally dominating the market yet but it’s worrying that we’re basically reliant on Apple and Microsoft to hold the line.

Does Firefox not count for anything?

about 10% and falling, but perhaps that can change, I just don’t see how.

Chrome edging towards 70% on desktop, Microsoft has thrown in the towel, Safari obviously rules iOS, Firefox exists only as insurance for Chrome.

Please, please I’m begging you, use firefox.

PLEASE install firefox as a mobile browser and then run adblock on your mobile browser it’s so good I promise.

Look.

Look.

I know I’m a total grind about open source stuff but browsers are the PERFECT place to learn to love open source software and for so long FireFox was a major part of the browser market and sometimes if you want to see what kind of fuckery google is up to it helps to see the kinds of things they block in firefox and just

There’s an organization that makes free, excellent, safe software that doesn’t collect and market your data but for some reason two thirds of the world uses a google product and most of the leftover population uses apple and just

I promise, firefox is so good - the extensions are incredible look - I can use lightbeam to see what sites I use and how they connect to other sites (bottom right should give you an idea how much time I spend on tumblr)

or I can look at ublock origin and see that it’s blocked over 2 million requests since I installed it or I can run the facebook container extension and stop facebook from tracking me and you know what I bet you can do a lot of that on chrome too but you’re doing that while chrome itself is tracking you and gobbling up your activity for google and

firefox is so fuckin great and it’s such a great ambassador for other open source projects please be a big old fuckin nerd with me and use firefox and run a bunch of funky extensions and customize the fuck out of your web experience.

FIREFOX.

I just love firefox okay.

This is really long and I can’t focus enough to read and understand the whole thing, can somebody summarize??

Firefox used to have a big part of the browser market but it has been by FAR surpassed by Chrome, which is a bummer. Firefox is free and open source and has been since 2003, they don’t track or sell your data and have built in privacy protections as well as many excellent extensions to customize your browser. Additionally you can install firefox on android devices and use extensions like ublock origin to block ads on your cellphone, which is great!

Curran and Heinwald’s hideous misadventures continue. I’m excited to take them on the Fortune from Afar raid rerun! Ieyasu and Botan make up the rest of my dark team so it’s a real embarrassing double date situation.

PLEASE DON’T THINK ABOUT WHAT IT WOULD EVEN MEAN TO INTRODUCE NYARLATHOTEP INTO THE BEDROOM but the fact that Curran canonically calls Nyarlathotep “Nyar” is probably one of my top 5 favorite facts about Accursed Archives. NEVER FORGET

Terrea

Terrea, a mix between a role play site, a pet site, a breeding game and a semi-open species, has just launched and is having its Welcome Event! During this event, new players will get a free starter blobling (that's your character) and will be able to participate in the making of the first of many land masses to exist on the on-site planet. At its core, Terrea is a role play site that revolves around player choice and freedom of expression, so much so that it's baked right into the plot. The plot is a bit on the more adult side of things, focusing on Order vs Chaos, as well as touching on what it means to be a person and at what point you acquire rights. Right now, we're working on a magic system and combat system, so there are lots of things on horizon. Come take a look! We'd love to have you. Site link: terrea.freeforums.net

this is so blessed, thank you for my life... i really like the way you set the atmosphere for the setting. It feels so timeless, somehow.
