ok, now my interest is piqued. Can CA: Civil War be watched as a stand-alone movie? With all of the new Black Panther movie and casting news I want to see the CA:CW. Would I need to watch any other films prior to going to the cinema?

Hi anon! I would say that watching the prior films IS necessary. Civil War does NOT work as a stand-alone. There is too much info you need to know going in. I know that sounds scary because we’re at movie #13 now, but the MCU is a universe that builds on itself. What happens in previous movies is absolutely relevant to the plot. That said, you don’t have to watch EVERY single MCU film that’s come along in order to watch CACW. Here’s what I would say are the directly relevant/essential films: Captain America: The First Avenger (you have to meet Steve, Bucky, and Peggy and understand who Steve Rogers is at his core and see how he became Captain America. There’s also a call-back scene/line in CACW from CATFA)The Avengers (Essential team relationship dynamics info AND what happened in New York is directly relevant to the plot in CACW)Captain America: The Winter Soldier (you have to see how the Capfam crew forms and understand Steve’s relationships with Sam and Nat. You also need to find out what happened to Bucky. Events of CATWS are used as a justification for actions in CACW. Something huge that changes the entire MCU world happens in this one.)The Avengers: Age of Ultron (Events from this film set the stage for Civil War. This film also introduces several important characters. You won’t get Civil War w/o this one)Iron Man 1 (Who is Tony Stark, who are his people, what’s his story)Iron Man 2 and 3 (Deeper into Tony Stark, who his people are-especially Rhodey-and what his issues are. First introduction of Black Widow in IM2. Essential to understanding his reactions/motivations/fears)The Incredible Hulk (a lot of people would probably say that you don’t need to see this one, but I think it is important because of General/secretary Ross. He was one of the villains of the movie and his actions in Civil War will make a LOT of sense after watching this one)Optional: Ant-Man (A very fun film and the MCU origin story for one of the Team Cap people. You’ll see how Ant-Man gets on Team Cap’s radar)I only put half of these in release order. You can watch the Cap films and the Iron Man films back-to-back if you want. Or in release order. The Avengers has to be watched before AoU. Cap 2 has to be watched before AoU as well. The Incredible Hulk can be watched at any point. I hope I didn’t just scare you away! If I have, I get it. It’s a big commitment. But a mostly satisfying one.

MCU: *Makes The Incredible Hulk*
MCU: *Directly references events and characters from The Incredible Hulk in other Marvel movies (as well as Agents of SHIELD), clearly indicating that it's canon regardless of the change in the actor playing Bruce Banner*
MCU: *brings William Hurt into Civil War to reprise his role of General Ross from The Incredible Hulk*
MCU: Betty Ross? Who the fuck is that?

Why do you think people forgot that the Incredible Hulk is actually an MCU Movie? Most aren't aware of the after-ending scene in it.

Marvel considers it canon-ish even if fandom pretends to be none the wiser. It was included in the Phase One archives and it’s on their official timeline. It was also the subject of one of their one-shots. So, I think the vast majority of fandom don’t have a leg to stand on with their erasure of actual leading lady, Betty Fucking Ross.

*coughs* Most people forget it because it was a sloppy, badly-paced, badly-plotted film which only had one redeeming feature, and that was Betty Ross.

That aside, the film could be pushed off a cliff.

It wasn’t worse than Iron Man 2,

come on. People still regard that one as canon.

it doesn’t matter how good or bad you think the film is.  The Incredible Hulk is MCU canon.  Marvel continually refers back to it.  and to disregard it entirely is to disregard important things in the MCU and for Bruce/Hulk and erases Betty Ross.  And the last one is unacceptable.

and yes, good point with IM2. a movie a lot of Marvel fans consider to be a trainwreck but yet the canon of IM2 is still considered canon of MCU and all the characters involved in IM2. (except arguably how fans interpret rhodey most times at least.. which is to say they ignore the canon for their own whims)

I will never understand the Rhodey “stole” the suit mentality bullshit. Pepper, Natasha and Rhodey were the shining beacons in an otherwise shitastic movie.

As for The Incredible Hulk, I think the recasting plays a big part on it, like, they sometimes act like it means a blank slate for Bruce as a character, yet canon/fanon constantly borrows plot points and development that took place in TIH.

You can have your cake and eat it too. Liking Fluffalo’s version of Banner better does not equal TIH erasure.

I would like to see them redo The Incredible Hulk. I would like to see them redo it better and with actual decent pacing and story-telling and some emotional resonance. Also, with Rick Jones, because srsly, Rick is the reason Bruce is the Hulk. I mean for goodness sake, Bruce got gammad trying to save the kid.

In TIH, I didn’t care about Bruce and why he was running at all, not until Betty encountered the Hulk, and even then, I cared more about her than about him. They didn’t give any incentive or reason to care about him in the first hour of the film. It made it very hard to like it.

And I would very much like to make sure Ang Lee didn’t get anywhere near it, because good god the cinematography in The Hulk makes me want to throw large heavy things at my TV screen.

Incidentally, random point: the MCU also refers back to The Hulk film as well. Bruce pretty much almost directly quotes Betty Ross from The Hulk. Which makes things confusing when it comes to which one is canon.

Ugh as much as I would *love* to have Betty Ross back, I don’t want Hulk to get a

third shot at a franchise after two financial flops when they’re still using the failure of Elektra as to why we can’t have a female led film.
