when i was 8-9, i was playing hide and seek with my sisters (i am the b e s t at that game) at my grandma’s house, and as a last minute decision i decided to hide inside the giant pussywillow in the backyard. i hid in there for at least an hour and only heard my sisters nearby once. another hour or two passed, and i was wondering how they hadnt found me yet, because im not that good, and so i climbed out and went looking for them. it was starting to get dark and when i went inside my grandma was super suprised to see me. she said “how did you get here?” and i said, “ive been hiding in the pussywillow since we started playing hide and seek” and she said “really? because i saw you leave with your sisters.” and i got a wicked chill. she called my mom and she said “she came home with us, how did she get there?” and i told her that i’d been hiding and she said “then who came home with us?” and went to check on me. i wasnt there so she asked my sister “wheres (my name)?” and she said “she was just telling me to come outside with her because she had something to show me but i said no because its dark. she was really mad at me.” and my mom told me after i got home that after my sister had said that she had looked out the window and saw me staring at her with big pale blue eyes.
my eyes are green.

WHAT IS GOING ON?
so women are supposed to grin and bear the books, the comics, the movies, the plays, the tv shows, the stories, the sci-fi, the translated ancient poems, the fucking millennia of men writing about their self inserts torturing women and it being declared as High Art by other men, we’re supposed to read it in our free time, study it in classrooms, include their styles in our own writing, accept their cultural influence as natural, watch it in the cinema, write about it, talk about it, accept it, aspire it, but men can’t tolerate three seconds of female wish fulfilment of a woman snapping the wrist of a creep without feeling personally kicked in the balls.
This reminds me of something I observed in college while I was doing my honors thesis on women in modern horror films. I watched a LOT of horror during that time as part of my research, and sometimes that was done with my family around.
And my dad and brothers? Were deeply disturbed by the movie Jennifer’s Body. I was flabbergasted. It’s not scary! It’s not even that gory. But they were horrified by it. These men who grew up on 70s slashers were legitimately shook by 90 minutes of Megan Fox eating a few teenage boys, mostly off-screen.
Similarly, my all-male reading panel for my thesis? Were so disturbed by my synopsis of the film Teeth that they couldn’t even talk about it. One of them said he couldn’t look at his wife for a week after reading it.
Again, grown-ass men who study and teach media for a living. Who definitely watch and enjoy horror movies. One of whom was a huge Tarantino buff. We watched and read worse in his intro to mass media class! But one movie about a girl whose vag could bite was enough to haunt him.
Then of course you have things like the Gone Girl backlash–men yelling that Amy Dunne is evil and women clamoring to assure everyone that they know she is not someone to emulate–the backlash against Carol Danvers, and, more recently, the griping from MRAs against the upcoming film Hustlers, which is about strippers scamming their Wall Street clients.
My conclusion? Most men–at least most straight, cisgender men, who are both my sample population and most of the ones whining that Carol is a “villain”–are perfectly fine with, and desensitized to, media where men do violence to women (horror movies), or men do violence to men (horror and action movies). They’re even sort of fine when women do violence to women (“ooooo cat fight!”).
But they get intensely uncomfortable when women are depicted doing any kind of violence to men, especially in films that tilt the balance of power to the other side of the m/f gender binary beyond a single moment or scene.
So woman as flesh-eating monster with men as her preferred cuisine? Woman who responds to unwanted sexual contact by biting it off? Woman who frames her cheating husband for murder? Woman whose response to harassment–behavior that many of the loudest whiners know is both creepy and reflective of their own thoughts/actions–is to break something?
Too scary. Unacceptable. Disturbing. These men hate being presented with the idea, even in fiction, that their position of power is socially constructed, that it could easily be flipped the other way. It terrifies them.
In feeling that terror, they experience a tiny modicum of what living, existing, moving, being perceived as a woman in the world is like.
And they flinch every time.
Here have a newspaper comic from 1993
I thought this was worthy enough to post because my clowncore bracelet broke like 3 times and I was livid
I just had a guy proudly unfollow me because I said mean things about Nazis.
I took a quick scan of his page and he’s an underweight, single dude that’s obsessed with guns and violence and openly and proudly a pedophile.
Damn, Nazis, you just love comforting to stereotypes don’t you?
I just realized that any Nazis reading this won’t be smart enough to parse that comment so I’ll dumb it down for you.
Nazis are only Nazis because they’re too stupid and pathetic to get anywhere in life so they blame others for their own failure and resort to fantasies of violence because they’re impotent, weak children that are desperate to be strong.
They’re also all pedophiles.
The best part about posting anti-Nazi posts is that you get to find all the Nazis following you and either they leave or you get to block them!
#yes all nazis

being told i dont understand how fiction works is so funny thank you 32 year old who reads nothing but smut fanfiction i will take that into consideration and maybe drop out of my degree
“its fiction it isnt real nothing that is fictional matters” is genuinely the stupidest lowest brain take and so plainly shows you dont understand the role of the arts in human society like morality aside it genuinely makes u look like an ignorant moron. because you are.
Suuuuure I'm pretty positive the obscure french writer who was outshined by Gustave Flaubert cause he couldn't network as well is the reason my tits are so big. Direct influence, direct consequence.
But hey go off i guess.
It’s particularly disturbing to see folks in fandom scream: “Fiction doesn’t impact reality!” after having recently read some of the more extreme cases of fiction doing just that. Did you know that the movie Scream inspired no less than 3 cases of copycat killings and attempted murders? Because I sure didn’t.
And then you have those two girls who tried to murder their friend because of Slenderman. Honestly, read and research things before uttering things like: “Fiction doesn’t impact reality!” with such certainty. To say you look foolish is an understatement.
Ok, you see, this? This right here? This exact comment is why people think y'all have no idea how fiction actually works--or, hell, how reality works, nevermind the way the two actually intersect and influence each other. Because you’ve circled right back around to ‘violent video games turned my otherwise perfectly lovely and normal child into a violent felon!!!!’ rhetoric, without the slightest trace of irony. And it’s... kind of alarming?
Like, do you honestly think that several perfectly normal individuals watched Scream and, completely out of nowhere, with no other factor than the fact that they watched Scream, decided to kill people? Because of the movie? Do you also think that Tom Clancy is at fault for 9/11 because he ‘predicted’ the plane hijacking terrorist attack in a novel? Did Viktor Nabokov turn otherwise perfectly normal and mentally healthy people into pedophiles because they read his book and decided it was normal and ok to be attracted to children, actually? Does all of this mean it really is Jodie Foster’s fault that John Hinkley shot Reagan???? Are the rest of us who managed to do things like watch slasher films and action flicks and play games where the only goal is to kill lots of people and not go out and murder actual real living people just... lucky?
Do you understand, yet, how the idea that ‘if you watch or read this bad thing, you’re going to want to go out and do that thing, because fiction directly impacts reality’ is a) a ludicrous statement, and b) something that real live people are actually saying?
Dark, taboo, or otherwise despicable topics had always existed and been explored in fiction. Always. No one became a murderer because they read a book where someone got murdered. No one became a pedophile because they read a book about one. (Certainly no one became a pedophile because they read a story about a 17-year-old dating a twenty-something.) Scream did not turn a bunch of people into murderers--some people who already wanted to do murder watched Scream and decided to use it for inspiration. Those girls didn’t decide to murder their friend ‘because of Slenderman’--there were clearly issues already present which that sort of stimulation may have adversely triggered, but there are plenty of people who played/watched Slenderman shit who didn’t try to murder their friends!!!!!
Dangerous and sick people often gravitate towards media which reinforces their own disgusting beliefs. That doesn’t make it any given bit of fiction’s fault if they go out and hurt people--they would have hurt people anyway, if possibly in different ways. Fiction can be used for the purposes of grooming, but so can literally anything else. Someone with skewed ideas of consent who believes that some sick rape fantasy is something to Emulate would have violated someone else’s consent eventually anyway, because those sort of thoughts do not spring up out of thin air because someone read a bodice ripper once.
And you can absolutely (and probably should!) have discussions about the nuances here--the ways a given work might be problematic in its depiction of something horrific, or how an abusive relationship has been dangerously romanticized (see: Fifty Shades of Grey, which hey, still exists! was published! many people enjoy it for whatever reason, but the criticism exists too, as does similar criticisms of the source material it was originally fanfic of, and that’s good and healthy and those discussions should also exist!). But those discussions are actively hampered when people have to beat you over the head with FICTION! IS! NOT! REALITY!!! because you don’t seem to understand that while they influence each other, the impact is not one-to-one and it’s important to remember that reality affects fiction to a far greater degree than the other way around!
“Fiction is not reality” does not mean that fiction has no affect on reality whatsoever--obviously it does, or shit like representation in the mass media wouldn’t be the issue it is today. But it does mean that someone isn’t gonna become a sex offender or murderer because they read one too many darkfics, and it also means that there is a marked difference in the affect a piece of fiction with a few thousand hits will have, in the grand scheme of things, compared to a multi-million-dollar fucking blockbuster.
