Bahaha yeah, I made that post a while ago on a whim and I guess it resonates with a lot of people which pleases me!
Honestly, I think fluff is fine and dandy and has it’s place, but I also think it’s extremely important to be aware of what their relationship entails. It really doesn’t have a happy ending, and it’s one borne from manipulation, desperation, and weakness.
It’s codependence, and it’s super unhealthy. Obviously out of the two, Rick is much more unhealthy for Morty than visa versa, but we’re really seeing Morty fire back at Rick this season. Makes me think back to season one when Rick warned Morty not to get too cocky.
I think the show’s writers know their audience very well. They know a lot of people ship them, hell, they bait it often and I’ll fight anyone who says otherwise.
But one thing they always make sure to point out is that shit is toxic, and unsustainable. I’m honestly curious to see where their relationship will go (in the show), because honestly it seems to be traveling downhill fast. What’s it all leading to?
I’m personally hoping for a nice, primal instincts brawl between them both. Purge, mother fuckers, purge.
But yeah, I really love all of the options we have with this season, all the different forms of dependence and unhealthy coping (from everyone in the Smith family). It’s a psychologists playground.

Rick pauses, turns to look at his grandson. His mouth's already open with some half hearted insult hanging at the tip of his tongue until he catches the look on Morty's face. He's stern, determined, and shaking. Like he's worked up the courage to ask this all day. Maybe longer. And Rick doesn't know what it is that makes him answer honestly, but he does.
"Sometimes," he admits, eyes hardening. He's not sure if he's reassuring Morty or himself at this point, because it's terrifying to think that Rick doesn't love him since they've been fucking for months. "When my control slips."
Morty smiles, and it's bittersweet because he knows this is all they'll ever be, yet somehow... "Sometimes is enough."
Justin in reference to the post credits scene of S2 E3: "By the way, [Rick's] naked from the waist down in that shot. No one knows that but Rick's naked with a hard on, from the waist down. And that's canon."
Potentially Unpopular Opinion: I’m honestly getting pretty tired of people pretending that our ship isn’t problamatic.
News flash: it is.
It’s problamatic as all hell. It’s downright disgusting. We know this. We need to own this shit. I want to read more fics that explore the problamatic aspects of the ship. I want to feel Rick’s utter self loathing as he jerks off at night, tipping back bottle after bottle hoping he can forget his fucked up desires.
I want Morty worrying why the hell he can’t be a normal teenager and just get off to regular porn like any other fourteen year old with free reign of the internet. I want Morty hating himself for imagining Rick’s voice as he sneakily looks up guy on guy on YouPorn.
I want Rick unable to look Beth in the eye after him and Morty fuck, and him pulling away as Beth leans in to give him a hug because, “Dad I’m just so glad you’re home.”
Please, I’m putting out an official request. Can we stop pretending that when they fuck it’ll be sunshine and roses? It’s not. It’ll be hands clamped over mouths to keep quiet, sneaking downstairs into Rick’s room at night and doing laundry while Beth and Jerry aren’t home so they don’t have to explain the stains on Rick’s bedsheets.
We need to explore what makes this ship so complex. The dynamic has so many possibilities that can be touched upon, it’s really a shame to abandon it in favor of a good romp fic (even though I do understand why people write them).
