Word had gotten around that there was a live mermaid at Aether, which started to cause trouble left and right. Gladion knew it was Lillie who had told Hau, who then had been running his mouth to whoever that managed to hear it.
Doing his best to keep people away from his office, it became too much at the end, which ended up with a few attempts at sneaking inside to catch a glimpse of the creature. One night, there was an attempt on breaking in again, or so they thought.
The entire building being closed, thieves had managed to shut off the alarm, breaking into the facility, and over to Gladion’s office. They had heard about the mermaid, and the creature was their target, planning to sell her off to someone who wanted to give off a lot of money.
It didn’t go well, as Gladion was around, doing some late night work in a different office. Noticing some ruckus outside, he decided to give it a quick look, as there shouldn’t be anyone around. Not being able to see anything outside, he didn’t think much of it, figuring it was his imagination playing tricks on him since it was late.
As he were about to get back at the desk, he heard his name being screamed, which startled him. Not thinking twice, he hurried out of the room. While running down the hallway, he started to think of who might have screamed his name, since no one should be around.
It then dawned on him, running as quickly as possible down to his office, finding the door pried open, and the lock destroyed. Cautiously going into his own office, he noticed that the massive aquatic tank were broken. Seawater covering the floors, but no mermaid in sight. Taking in the sight of the broken tank, he could hear someone give off a rather painful grunt, as well as a slapping sound in the distance.
Hurrying out to the front, he noticed a group of men struggling to carry the mermaid, as she was flailing and wriggling so much, occasionally slapping the one holding her tail. Once she noticed Gladion in the distance, she stopped and just looked surprised at him, which made the men carrying her suspicious, looking into her direction.
They were all cursing and started to work even quicker. Gladion didn’t have time to think as she sprinted towards them, planting a firm fist in the face of the guy holding her tail. He let go of her, and she got dropped onto the flooring with a loud thud. The guy got knocked out, and the other dropped the creature instantly, starting to throw punches left and right at the blonde.
The fight didn’t take on for too long, as once she had been dropped, and the guy who had been knocked out woke up, the men fled in a hurry. Having received a few blows, Gladion looked around finding a small trail of blood, leading to the railings. Following the blood trail, he found the mermaid with the railing, looking down at the seawater several meters below them. Gladion started to panic. Not because she would escape, but that she were hurt.
Calling for her, he started to approach her. Only for her to drag herself under the railings. As quickly as she did, he hurried over and heard the water surface break. Leaning over the railings and looking down at the water, seeing her just beneath the surface for a few seconds before she got up, inhaling a few times. He could barely see her face, but could tell that she were in pain from whatever injury she had gotten.
He just stood there, staring at her as she dived and disappeared. The injury she had gotten, leaving a few spots of blood on the surface. He sighed and hung his head, lightly shaking. Looking over his shoulder, he decided to go back to his office, seeing if he could find anything else that those thieves might have been after.
He didn’t find anything, other than a few scales from her, and some glass shards with blood on it. The sight made it clear that they had broken the glass, and forcefully dragged her out, making her injure herself. At least nothing else were taken from his office regarding his research.
Cleaning up the mess took a week, and Gladion started to feel rather lonely in his office, which ended up with him not spending any time there at all. He would, at most days, stay at a seaside cafè, just staring out at the sea, fiddling with the few scales he had found from her, wondering what she were doing and if she were doing fine.
