imagine thinking you can explain why turkey banned gay pride to a gay turkish person who has lived in turkey for 25 years. the laws against homosexuality aren’t “horrifyingly strict” in turkey and they never were. because there are no laws. it’s not illegal nor is it criminalized or punishable in any way and it never has been (just like your second LONG list of muslim countries ranging from albania to mali that don’t have laws against LGBT people). i’m sorry if that conflicts with your “all muslim countries hate and kill gay people” narrative but i imagine that’s your islamophobia jumping out. unsurprising. as you’re exactly the type of person i was talking about in my original post and you can’t seem to read your own screenshots. again, unsurprising.
pride as we know it has been held in istanbul annually since 2003, though LGBT organizations & events in the country go as far back as the early 90s (an earlier version of this post mixed the dates up whoops). this all continued relatively undisturbed up until 2015. (pride is actually still being held even after 2015 because turkish gay people are fucking warriors but that’s beside the point). prior to the ban, istanbul pride was a party, the biggest pride event in the middle east. i know this because i attended most of them. the reason erdogan began cracking down on us is because we protested his corrupt fucking government in gezi park in 2013. most of the people who protested in gezi showed up to pride in 2014 and 2015 in solidarity with lgbt people, because lgbt presence in gezi was so visible. as a result, pride 2014 and 2015 were HUGE events, much larger than they had been before, and much more wide reaching than they had ever been before. now not only were we gay but we were also anti-government and we were holding hands with other minorities, with other muslims, with everyone else that disagreed with erdogan’s policies and wanted him out of power.
that is why erdogan banned pride. because he is a fascist and we dared to call him what he fucking is and we dared to support each other while doing it. have you connected the dots? want me to draw you a picture? turkey has been muslim since FOREVER and also SECULAR since 1923. which you would know if you had done any ACTUAL research. for this reason the previously left leaning & centrist governments didn’t target gay people on religious grounds. erdogan’s opposition parties (CHP and HDP) actually support us even now; they marched with us in gezi and in pride. it goes without saying that all of these people are muslims too. almost every single person who voted for chp and hdp and all the other moderate parties are muslims too. 50% of turks who don’t vote for erdogan and want a more liberal government in power are muslims too.
but erdogan (who is a fascist) felt threatened by the liberal (and mostly young) people of gezi park and pride. THAT is why homophobic state practices are on the rise. those are the facts, not some random graphs you pulled from god knows what website or your dumbass conclusions that have no basis in turkey’s history or reality, contemporary or otherwise. erdogan sells his fascism to his voter base through religious conservatism, which is (coincidentally!!!!!!) super close to what trump and putin and bolsonaro do.
the biggest indicator of this kind of covert fascism is the fact that pride has to be banned every YEAR in turkey–it didn’t get a broad-scale lifetime ban like you seem to imagine it did. since 2015 the government has just been making up “disturbing the peace” excuses year after year instead of saying “we hate gay people.” because, again, the problem isn’t that we’re gay, the problem is that we vocally hate the fucking government. the problem is that pride is actually a protest not a party. the problem is that we’re not silent and the problem is that other groups of people who erdogan ALSO oppresses and silences come out to pride to support us on a whole range of issues. not to mention that turkey has been in a state of emergency since 2016 due to the almost-coup (which, again, was likely done by erdogan himself but whatever) which was an incredibly convenient excuse to ban all protests, not just gay pride. erdogan took full advantage of this excuse to crush all dissent against him. because there WAS dissent against him, and we were beginning to organize in a way that was tremendously threatening to his power. and he didn’t like that at all. because he is what? a fascist. these things didn’t happen because he is a muslim and they didn’t happen because the country is muslim, either.
as for erdogan being a conservative fascist, if you had done any research at all this would be clear to you. he jails journalists and civilians for criticizing him, uses his police force to enact violence onto dissenters, has privatized half the country and wont stop selling our shit, controls the media almost completely, has laundered hundreds of millions of dollars to build his personal fortune, his policies hate women, hate gay people, hate ethnic minorities—does that sound familiar to you? i bet it does to everyone else not living in trump’s ass. this post was not a platform for you to complain about your conservative sensibilities being hurt or for you to air your own GLARING ignorance about turkey. frankly it’s embarrassing that you think you can explain my own country’s situation to me when i doubt you could even point to turkey on a map prior to this conversation. and since you seem so terribly confused, let me clarify: all trump supporters and putin supporters as well as all erdogan and bolsonaro supporters ARE fascists. i’m sorry if i only “implied” this when i actually meant to state it outright. y’all are fascists because the men you support are fascists. but i’m not gonna talk about that either.
as for islam not being a race–yes it’s not a race, but islamophobia is used to justify inordinate amounts of violence against a group of people who are OVERWHELMINGLY brown and black, especially where western foreign policy is concerned. that makes islamophobia racist. goodbye i hope you learned something though i very much doubt it!
