This demon is unlike any other that you’ve faced before.

Kyoujurou, pressure the left flank and drive it towards the middle! We’ll corner it with a pincer attack!” You call out as you leap through the treetops, relying on the meagre light of the half moon to see where you’re putting your feet. Beneath you on the ground, Kyoujurou calls his affirmation, keeping tight on the demon’s tail. “Remember to keep an eye out for his Blood Demon Art!”

It’s the first time either of you have seen a Blood Demon Art like this one. Instead of the usual ability to hurt or deal damage in the most unexpected ways possible, this demon’s ability makes you deeply besotted with the first thing you lay eyes on. The spell had not been limited to animate creatures, and both you and Kyoujurou had solemnly promised to never speak of this night ever again.

After a while, however, you and Kyoujurou had gotten much better at avoiding the bright pink smoke that the demon released — although the spell was potent, it was short lived. Darting forward, you leap down from the trees as Kyoujurou thrusts forward with his blade, forcing the demon to jump out of reach and right into your path.

With a shout, you grip your sword tight and swing. “Breath of Snow, First Form, Snowflake Slash!”

The demon, unable to dodge your attack, screams as your blade cuts through his neck as easily as slicing running water. In that moment, familiar fuchsia clouds erupt from his body, enveloping you in them completely. You gasp in surprise, throwing your hand over your mouth, and leap away urgently to avoid breathing it in, but you’re a little too late. A few meters away, you can hear Kyoujurou calling for you, panicked.

You stumble towards his voice and out of the dissipating smoke, feeling a little lightheaded. “I’m fine.” You reassure Kyoujurou the second he dashes over to you, concern written all over his face. “I just didn’t expect the demon to make a last ditch effort like that, so I was taken by surprise. I won’t let that happen again.”

Kyoujurou waves the remainder of the pink smoke away from your face before glancing behind you. “It seems that the demon has been slain indeed!” The body has already started to disintegrate into ash. He turns back to you, carefully looking over your form for any injuries. “Are you sure that you are alright? You must have inhaled a lot of the smoke just now. Do you feel anything off?”

A little confused as well, you simply shrug. You had expected yourself to have already been trying to kiss the life out of a rock on the ground, or perhaps be in a passionate embrace with a tree. “Maybe it’s because I’ve already slayed the demon that its spell has no effect? I’m just a little hot and sweaty from the battle and I really want a shower…” You clap Kyoujurou on the shoulder lightly with a reassuring smile before sheathing your sword. “Come on, our work here is done. Let’s head back to the town for the night.”

He nods, but then fixes his gaze sternly on you. “If you feel anything strange, tell me immediately!” His golden eyes are filled with worry for you, and warmth blossoms in your chest in response. “Understood?”

You hum in agreement. “Of course.”

As if the two of you had already used up all the luck you had on defeating that demon, the first inn both of you had come across only had one available room. Too exhausted from the fight earlier to search for another inn, you haul Kyoujurou with you to your designated room, good naturedly ignoring the man’s protests that you should get the room.

“You can sleep over there, and I’ll sleep over here.” You tell the Flame Pillar after pushing him into the room with you. He stands rigidly in the doorway, still hesitant, and you laugh at the conflicted expression on his face. “Come on, Kyoujurou. It’s the middle of the night and the two of us need to set off early tomorrow morning, so we should get as much rest as possible.”

“Yes, but it is not proper for me to sleep in the same room as you!” Kyoujurou tries to protest, looking at you helplessly. “I could sleep outside while you take the room, and-” You put one hand over his mouth, cutting off his words.

“As if I’d allow you to sleep outside when we have two perfectly good futons in the room.” You scold as he looks down at you seriously, golden eyes bright even in the dim light of the room. “Really, Kyoujurou, you’re so sweet and honorable that it’s a little annoying. You’re a man of principle and a precious friend. I’d trust my life with you, Kyo.”

You feel Kyoujurou swallow under your palm at the weight of your words before he reaches up to pull your hand away from his mouth. His gaze doesn’t leave yours. “Then I will not break the trust you have in me.” He says earnestly, squeezing your hand. Satisfied with his acceptance, you smile at him and hold out your hand playfully. “So, janken to decide who gets to shower first?”

Kyoujurou pulls a rock, while you put out a paper. You suspect he lost on purpose, but he admits nothing with that unflappable smile of his, shooing you to head to the baths first while he lays out the futons for both of you.

As you gather the robes the inn has provided you, you fan yourself with one hand, staring out of the window in confusion.

Why is tonight so unbearably warm?

The cawing of a crow wakes you in the middle of the night.

Blearily, you sit up and rub your eyes, confused as to what has disturbed your rest so late, when you see a familiar kasugai crow perched at your windowsill. Even though you’ve barely awoken, the sight is enough to make your heart skip a beat in anticipation. What message will it deliver to you? Is Kyoujurou fine? Injured? Clicking its beak, it looks at you with bright, beady eyes and caws its message once more clearly.

“Rengoku Kyoujurou is returning home soon, caw!

As soon as you hear those words, you’re throwing the covers off you, grabbing your haori and throwing it over your sleeping robes before you run out of your room. You almost stumble on the engawa once in the darkness of the room but manage to catch yourself in time, too excited to stop and find a lantern for light. Barefoot, you make your way over the courtyard to the main doors of the house, pulling them open as quickly as you can.

You’ve missed him so much.

In the gentle light of the full moon hanging in the sky overhead, you see Kyoujurou making his way up the road to your house. The second you open the door, he glances up at you - and your eyes meet.

Your heart wells up with happiness, so full you can hardly contain it. Your feet fly across the path before you know what you’re doing, and in the next second you’re crashing into Kyoujurou’s chest, his arms wrapping around you tightly and lifting you clean off the ground with ease.

Your lips capture his, and everything around fades away in an instant except for him him, in your arms, safe and alive. Part of you feels as if you’re still asleep, but you’ve dreamed of seeing him so many times in your time apart, and none of them had felt so full of raw emotion like the moment you’re experiencing now. The sweet taste of his mouth overtakes your senses as he lifts you a little higher so he can angle his lips better against yours, a low, pleased hum filling his chest. He’s here. He’s really home.

You finally break away from air unwillingly to press your forehead against his, your fingers weaving themselves in the soft strands of his hair. The tender smile he gives you is weary, but his eyes almost glow with affection as they meet yours.

“I’m home, my dear flame.” He says, voice slightly hoarse, and your happiness overflows.in the form of tears

“It’s been a long time.” You bury your face in the crook of his neck to hide the embarrassingly large smile on your face, kissing the underside of his jaw softly. You hear his gentle laugh, feel the kisses he adorns your unbound hair with. “I apologise. I woke you up, didn’t I?”

“There’s nothing to apologise for, I wanted to see you as soon as possible anyway.” You reach up to wipe at a smudge of soot on his cheek and he scrunches up his face adorably for you. “You’re all dirty, Kyo. Come on, put me down and let’s go back. You need a bath or I’m not giving you any more kisses.”

Kyoujurou puffs out his cheeks as he looks down at your lips longingly. “I wanted to see you, so I rushed straight home after my mission was over.” He explains himself as he begins walking once more, with you still cradled carefully in his arms. “Also, you ran all the way out here without any footwear and a thicker coat.” He picks up one of your hands, pressing it to his lips so that he can blow on them. “It’s late at night and the wind is chilly. Next time, you can just stay at the door. I’ll be the one to run to your side instead.”

Your cheeks warm.

“Okay.” You whisper softly as the two of you cross over the threshold into your home. For some reason, even though the fires are still not lit, it feels infinitely warmer with Kyoujurou by your side.

>>>

After his bath, a clean and freshly washed Kyoujurou joins you in the bedroom, dressed in his sleeping robes. With a smile, you gesture for him to sit in front of you and he does, settling onto the bedding comfortably. You pick up a wooden comb and begin to run it through the damp strands of his hair, untangling the knots you find and pausing occasionally to press kisses to the back of his neck. In the dim candlelight, his hair glows in a way akin to flames, and the sight is enough to warm your heart.

It’s so easy to fall back into the rhythm of a simple, domestic lifestyle. In this home, it’s almost as if there’s just the two of you - no demons, no swords, only the warmth of the love shared between you and him.

“It’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed the feeling of your fingers in my hair.” Kyoujurou murmurs after a while, and you let out a small sigh of resignation, resting your forehead on his shoulder. “Well, there’s nothing to be done about it. We’re both Pillars, and Oyakata-sama already does his best to arrange our missions so that we have time to spend together.”

The Master tries, he really does, but there’s always a demon somewhere, a village under attack, training to attend to and someone to save. While you’ve willingly dedicated everything to eradicating the world of man eating demons, you can’t help but wish for a peaceful life with the man before you.

Kyoujurou turns around before you so that the two of you are facing each other, before he holds out his arms to you in an invitation. It’s one you take without hesitation, moving forward so that you’re seated in his lap. The two of you remain that way for a while in each other’s embrace, simply enjoying being together.

“Then let’s make the most of the time together.” Kyoujurou says, his lips brushing the shell of your ear gently. You hum, leaning back against his chest. “Come now, let’s rest. It’s been a long time since I’ve held you in my arms.”

The candles are blown out and the two of you settle into bed together, Kyoujurou drawing the blankets over the two of you before he wraps his arms around you, nuzzling the back of your neck. His body temperature has always run hotter than yours, so you feel as if you’re enveloped in warmth. “I missed this.”

You lace your fingers with his. “I missed this too.” You murmur. As much as you want to continue enjoying the feeling of his arms holding you close, your eyelids are already beginning to feel heavy. “Goodnight, Kyoujurou.”

The last thing you feel is his breath against your pulse, the whisper of his smile on your skin.

“Goodnight, darling.”

hands.

Kyoujurou has been staring at you for an awfully long time now.

Sneaking a furtive glance at him as you reach for more potato starch, you wonder what exactly is so interesting about what you’re doing: kneading mochi dough with your hands. It’s a simple, repetitive and frankly, quite boring task, so you have absolutely no clue as to why Kyoujurou has been kneeling at the entrance to the kitchen for the last half an hour just to watch you pound dough.

Kyou,” you call out softly, and instantly Kyoujurou’s back straightens, his usual smile brightening to rival the afternoon sun outside.

“Yes!”

“Is there…” you gesture to the kitchen around you with flour dusted fingers, brows furrowed in confusion. “Something you need from the kitchen?”

“No!”

You raise an eyebrow, chewing your bottom lip between your teeth as you try to figure out what exactly he wants. “… Something to eat?”

“No!” His bright eyes sparkle like rubies caught in the sunlight. “Carry on, please! I shan’t disturb you!”

Hesitantly, you go back to kneading at the dough, trying to remain calm while your mind fumbles through a hundred and one possibilities in its panic. What does he want? Is he perhaps hungry? Are you kneading the mochi wrong?

Five minutes of intense staring later, you finally give up on trying to focus on your task and turn around to face Kyoujurou sternly. “Kyoujurou.”

He springs to attention the second you call his name. “Yes! What do you need!”

Kyou, I don’t know why you’ve been here the entire time, but I can’t concentrate if you keep staring at me like that.” You chide softly, and Kyoujurou blinks up at you owlishly with those honest amber eyes. Then his shoulders slump forward ever so slightly, and you start to panic. “Was I… a disturbance?”

“No, no!” You try to rectify your mistake as quickly as possible, kneeling in front of him so that you are eye to eye with the Flame Pillar. “I just want to know what you’re doing here, that’s all.”

“Oh! That!” His smile turns a hint more awkward, and his fingers grip the fabric of his pants tightly. “I simply wanted to watch you make mochi! Kochou said that it is a relaxing activity, and would be a good thing to do when I am not hunting demons!”

“Ahh… so that’s why.” You say, but can’t help the little twinge of disappointment in you. Turning around, you reach for the bowl of potato starch once more to hide the expression on your face. “Well, I suppose you could shift a little closer to watch-”

“You also have very beautiful hands!”

At his words, you fumble with the bowl and very nearly drop it on the ground, wheeling around to stare at Kyoujurou with wide eyes. His expression hasn’t changed the least, but the only difference is that his cheeks are now a bright shade of fuchsia. “Umm… what did you just say?”

“I said, you have very beautiful hands!” Kyoujurou repeats himself, his words almost a shout - and you hear a tiny quaver in his voice. His eyes are decidedly focused on the wall behind you. “If you would allow, I would like to hold them!”

You stare at him a few moments more, mouth moving soundlessly as you try to find the right words to answer him. “You… want to hold… my hands?”

Kyoujurou’s so red you’re afraid steam might start escaping his ears. “Uzui said that it would be more prudent to confess in a roundabout way, in case you did not feel the same!”

At the mention of the Sound Pillar’s name, you finally let out a tiny laugh and Kyoujurou looks at you in surprise. You’re going to kill that big idiot the next time you see him. “This is all Uzui’s fault, isn’t it?” You reach out to take Kyoujurou’s hands directly in yours, wrapping your fingers gently around his. The Flame Pillar shivers, and you hear the slight hitch in his breath. “Then, I’ll trouble you to keep holding them for me, Kyo.”

At your words, Kyoujurou looks at you in surprise for a moment, before his smile widens to the point where he shines so bright it almost hurts your eyes. His bigger hands cradle yours gently, as if you’re the most precious thing in the world. “Yes! I surely will!”

He beams at you for a few moments more before you look down at your conjoined hands and let out a soft noise of surprise. “Ahh… I got starch all over your hands. Let me get a cloth, I’ll wipe it off-”

Before you can pull away from him, however, he tugs you back to him with a bright smile.

“I’m never letting this hand go!”

stranded.

pairing: rengoku kyoujurou x reader

genre: fluff

The mission was a success.

Although it is more common for Pillars to work alone to make full use of their manpower, Oyakata-sama had assigned you and Kyoujurou on a joint mission. There was a disturbance in a remote village in the far west, rumored to one of the Twelve Moons devouring people. Luckily, the two of you had managed to subdue and slay it before it could kill and feast on even more victims before proceeding to clear the surrounding forests of any more demons.

However, the both of you had gotten snowed in due to an avalanche blocking off the mountain pass, and hence are to be stranded there for the next three days.

The second you wave off the last villager come to thank you for saving her child, you promptly make your way into your room, slide the door shut and proceed to collapse onto the tatami on the spot. Every bone in your body is aching as if you’ve been run over by a train and all its carriages; you have no idea how Kyoujurou still has the energy to help the villagers bury the rest of the bodies. You had tried to insist on helping as well, but your fellow Pillar had cheerily shooed you off to rest, reassuring you that’d they’d be done in no time.

Rolling over into a more comfortable position, you wince when fresh pain blooms across your shoulder blade and immediately scramble to your knees to take stock of your injury. The adrenaline from the battle earlier must be wearing off, because the moment you try to look over your own shoulder, about ten different muscles howl at you in protest. You groan.

“That’s just wonderful.”

Shrugging the haori off your shoulders, you study the dark red stain on the fabric contemplatively and consider if this is an injury you can simply shrug off. Common sense and your desire to actually live beyond thirty tells you no, so you sigh and drag yourself to your feet.

You could do with another pair of eyes.

Stepping out barefoot onto the engawa, you tip toe your way to the room next to yours. The candles aren’t lit, and you briefly wonder if Kyoujurou is still not back or if he’s already retired for the night. While you’re pondering this outside, the door slides open all of a sudden, startling you.

Kyoujurou! You scared me!” You tell him, one hand over your chest. Your friend smiles at you brightly from the doorway.

“My apologies! I was wondering why you were dawdling about outside instead of entering!” He’s in a slight state of undress, his Flame Pillar haori absent and two buttons on his uniform undone. He must have been in the middle of changing out of his clothes and getting ready for bed. “Do you need something from me?”

“Sorry for disturbing you, I just wanted to know if you made it back safely.” You shake your head, intent on just checking out your injury tomorrow. It’s not like you’ll die overnight, will you? “I’ll leave you to your rest now.”

With a wave you turn to leave, but before you can, Kyoujurou’s voice stops you in your tracks.

“I wish that you would be more forward with me!” Kyoujurou declarers loudly out of the blue, and you whirl around to look at him with wide eyes. He’s smiling at you, hopeful and genuine. “As fellow Pillars, we should help and rely on each other! Furthermore, you’re a precious friend of mine. I’d love to help you out, if you need me!”

Red colors your cheeks, and you glance to the side, embarrassed. “Of course. My apologies.” You mumble, “It’s just been so long that we’ve met that it feels a little awkward. You’re a precious friend to me too, Kyo.

At your words, Kyoujurou practically radiates happiness in the dim hallway. “That makes me happy to hear! Come on in!” He ushers you inside quickly, sliding the door shut behind you. You take a seat on the floor and make yourself comfortable, watching him move around the room to light the lamps. Soft candlelight springs to life, bathing the room in a dim orange glow, and he turns back to you once he’s done. “What is it that you need?”

“Well, I might have gotten an injury on my back, but I can’t see how severe it is. I need you to help me take a look.” You explain, and his eyes narrow in concern. In a few quick steps he’s by your side, kneeling behind you to examine your injury.

“Your uniform appears to have been slashed, but I am unable to take a closer look as your clothes are in the way.” Kyoujurou says, and you frown. This is going to be a pain… “Perhaps you should…” His words trail off, suddenly hesitant, and you laugh quietly under your breath. It’s been awhile since you’ve seen him being flustered. “I can call one of the women from the village to help you instead-”

“No need to, it’s late and they’ve had a long night. Besides, I trust you.” You say, a little amused as you reach up to undo the buttons of your top. “Turn away for a bit.”

“Of course!” His voice quavers just so slightly, and you can’t help the soft laughter that escapes you. Rengoku Kyoujurou, Flame Pillar of the Demon Slayer Corps, is endearing cute in your eyes, you think. Pulling off your top and wincing when the dried blood tugs at your injury, you use it to cover your front before calling to him.

“You can look now.”

You hear him shift to face you, and then there’s a little intake of breath as he sees your back. “There’s a cut on your left shoulder blade, about the length of my palm.” He explains seriously as he checks over your injury. “It doesn’t appear to be bleeding very much, but you should get it treated as soon as possible before infection sets in.”

“Ahh, got it. I’ll go to the village tomorrow morning and ask for some medicine.” You turn around to smile at him. “Thanks for your help, Kyoujurou.”

“I have medicine!” Kyoujurou announces enthusiastically before you can so much as think about leaving. “I visited Kochou’s estate before this mission, so I happen to have some ointment from her. I’m sure it’ll make you feel better! Give me a moment.” He rummages through his belongings and pulls out a distinctively lacquered container proudly. “Here it is!”

“Shouldn’t you keep that for something more important, Kyoujurou?” You ask him, worried. He’s headed out for another mission right after this one, after all. “I could always just get patched up at the village tomorrow. It doesn’t hurt much.”

“Nonsense!” Kyoujurou insists. “You are a precious friend, it would not be wasted on you.” When he sees your hesitance, his voice softens slightly. “Please, let me take care of you.”

Cheeks heating up slightly, you nod and turn around to hide your face from his gaze. “If you want to, then go ahead.” You say softly under your breath, and you can feel Kyoujurou’s smile behind you.

Demon Slayers are no stranger to injuries, and Kyoujurou has certainly faced his fair share of them before. He prepares the gauze and disinfectant liquid with practiced movements, raising them to your back with cautious hands. He’s clearly mindful of your injury.

“This might hurt a little,” he warns you, and you hum in acknowledgement.

“I trust you.” The words leave you easily. Kyoujurou’s fingers are warm against your skin.

When the disinfectant touches your gash, you bite back your wince at the sting, but of course Kyoujurou hears it. “Does it hurt?” He asks, clearly upset at the thought of causing you any pain, but you shake your head.

“No, I’m fine. I honestly didn’t think I was going to get injured, but today’s demon was really quite interesting.” You think aloud as Kyoujurou wipes down the area around your wound carefully. “I can’t believe I let myself get hurt by a Lower Moon. Embarrassing, don’t you think?”

“You’re not weak at all!” Kyoujurou pauses in treating your wound to scold you, and you turn around to see him smiling encouragingly at you. “You sustained it saving a little boy, did you not? It is not something to be embarrassed of!”

You laugh, turning back so that he can tend to your injury. “Thanks, Kyoujurou.”

“It’s not a problem! I simply spoke the truth.” He tells you as his fingers resume work once more, dabbing ointment on your wound. The faint smell of antiseptic tickles your nose. “It’s been a while since I’ve last seen you.” Kyoujurou’s voice is a hint softer than usual. “You’re just as selfless as I remember.”

His words make you smile, a light fluttering in your chest. “I’m glad I got to come on this mission with you too, Kyo. Since you became a Pillar, I rarely get to see you aside from Hashira meetings. Maybe getting snowed in was a blessing in disguise for me.” You laugh a little at your own words.

“I feel the same.” Kyoujurou’s breath dances across the back of your neck as he leans over to reach some of the smaller cuts on your shoulder. Content and safe with him, the exhaustion from today starts to catch up with you and you feel your eyelids getting heavier with each second that passes.

“I’m done.” Kyoujurou announces after a few minutes as he secures the knot on your dressing. “Although the wound is not severe, but it’d be good for you to get it changed daily to prevent infection. You should head back to your room now and rest properly-” Your head tilts forward and Kyoujurou pauses mid-sentence to realise you’ve already fallen asleep.

He briefly wonders if he should wake you, but his hand hovers over your shoulder when he catches sight of your sleeping face. Letting out a soft sigh, he murmurs to himself. “Falling asleep in a man’s room like this, you’re truly are cruel for making me suffer in this way.”

Instead, he averts his gaze and slips his arms beneath your knees and back, careful to avoid your injury, and carries you to the bedding he’d set out earlier for himself. Gently laying you out on it, he makes sure to cover you with the thick blanket so that you don’t catch a cold, and then brushes the hair out of your eyes with a tender hand as he looks down at you with a pained smile.

“You’re so defenseless around me.” He says softly into the quiet of the room, silent except for the sound of the winter wind outside. “I wonder if it’s because you trust me, or because you don’t see me that way at all…”

With a slightly self deprecating sigh, he makes to get up, intent on heading over to your room to sleep instead. Before he can leave, however, a smaller hand wraps around his wrist, holding him in place.

Kyo…” Kyoujurou looks down to see you pressing his hand to your cheek, a content smile on your face as you sleep. “Warm…”

His heart stumbles in his chest. Despite the winter chill in the air, Kyoujurou feels unbearably warm.

He settles back onto the ground, back against the wall as he looks at you with a resigned smile. “What am I to do with you, really…” His own eyes slide shut, but his hand remains tightly held in yours throughout the entire night.

The two of you fall asleep together, each dreaming of the other even as the sun begins to rise over the mountaintops.

summary. Between steam and giggles, he promised you to always come back to you and you knew it was a promise Kyojuro would keep.

Carefully, you dumped the bucket of relatively hot water over Kyojuro's head and back, the man in question laughing as loudly as ever when his bangs blocked his view. Sore muscles visibly relaxed as warmth seeped into every small fiber and seemingly made Kyojuro's skin glow.

You stood behind the Flame Hashira as you sank your fingers into the depths of his hair, rubbing the soap into his scalp and simultaneously giving the man in question a massage. "Your hands feel as good as always, [Name]!" Kyojuro praised and leaned into your gentle, though firm touch. A pleased hum left his lips as your blunt fingernails scraped against his scalp and even untangled some knots. You were dedicated to getting all the grease and dirt out of Kyojuro's hair, whatever the cost may be. "Oh please, you're making me blush."

Inuyasha was an anime series based off of a long running shonen manga and ended up being a long running anime series with 100+ episodes.

Yashahime is an anime original sequel series that, as far as we know, is slanted for roughly 24 episodes and has no long running source material to be based off of.

The fact that Yashahime's pacing is reflective of Inuyasha's pacing isn't a good thing. Especially because we don't know how, exactly, long the series is going to be. The closest episode count we have right now is 24 episodes. And the current pacing doesn't fit a lower episode count like that.

It's making fans, rightfully, worry about a possible rushed ending. It has also made these past few episodes, where we have been given teeny, tiny drops of plot, *feel like* filler, even though there is "technically" no filler because of a lack of a source material to draw from.
