but 12 year old dean coming back from the store with bread and sammy’s favorite cereal and a cheap bouquet of fake flowers that he puts in an old beer bottle in the middle of the flimsy coffee table of their motel room to make the place feel more like a home for sam 

and maybe it’s just to see the smile on sam’s face when they sit down and share peanut butter & jelly sandwiches on a wednesday afternoon when john is out on a hunt or maybe it’s because the closest to home sam’s ever known is a tangle of arms and legs in the backseat of the impala but dean knows as well as sam, no matter where they are, cheap plastic flowers or not, home is where his brother is

The first time Sam gets seriously hurt on a hunt Dean almost loses his mind. He yells at their Dad when he tells him to calm down, he yells at the doctors when they tell him they’re not sure whether Sam will make it, he yells at God for cursing them with this life. He yells until his voice becomes hoarse and then cries for hours. He prays to God to take him instead, to leave Sammy out of it he’s just a kid, please, and then spends the whole night by Sam’s side just staring at  him and willing his little brother to wake up. It’s while he’s watching Sam’s chest rise and fall softly that he vows that nothing this bad will ever happen to Sam again. Not while he’s around. And Dean Winchester keeps his promises.
