Everyone says that reading fanfiction is a useless pastime, but let’s not forget that I learned how to cook grilled cheese from a kiribaku fic
OH MY GOD YOU’RE THE ONE WHO TAUGHT ME HOW TO MAKE GRILLED CHEESE

OH MY GOD YOU’RE THE ONE WHO TAUGHT ME HOW TO MAKE GRILLED CHEESE
A touching reunion
A woman came into my work a little while ago loudly complaining about her (perfectly well-behaved) son, saying how he was ten years old and didn't know how to listen, and I nodded along like "yeah I totally remember being that age", and she looks at me and goes, "no, seriously, he's Autistic," and I spread my arms and go, "Hey, same! Twinsies!"
And this woman's eyes. My God, it was beautiful. She goes, "Really? And they let you WORK here?"
And then she turns back to her kid to nag at him and over her shoulder little dude and and I make what I can only describe as the purest form of eye contact I have ever experienced in my life
She snapped at him to stop running around and hold still so I froze in place like a terrified statue and he copied me and we both grinned and he's my favourite customer now
One experience that has not changed my whole life is the joyous vindication that comes from an adult communicating to a kid that yeah, you're not stupid, this other adult just needs to untwist their pants
this post just made a full trip back to my dash and reading it over again two years later I feel the need to add that when this happened I was working as uniformed security personnel
and I really really hope that the memory of "person in position of authority thinks that you're doing great and your mom is wrong about you" sticks in their head for when they need it most
Protect trans kids at all costs 💜
so the other day a castmate of mine was talking about having once been a little girl (at this point, i all but short-circuited because said castmate is a man in his mid-sixties and my brain had its little moment of “!!!!! trans person!!! and he’s OLD!!!!”) and being asked if there was a famous person he looked up to or wanted to look or be more like. and he said— again, as a little girl at this point— “santa claus!” and everyone thought he was weird for it.
and this story doesn’t read as well over text because you really have to see the guy. but he looks just like santa claus. he’s got the long white hair and the beard and the belly and everything. and i just. the amount of secondhand trans joy i experienced is truly insane. i’m gonna get old! i’m gonna get old the way i wanna get old! hey everybody you’re gonna get old; we’ve been doing it for years!
anyway shoutout to the santa claus of my cast and to every older trans person we love you so fucking much
for my friend's birthday :3
nothing has been more important to my being queer than when i went to my first pride parade, got seperated from my group, had a panic attack about it and was sitting on the side of the road holding a tiny genderfluid flag and freaking out. then this six foot five drag queen in four inch heels appeared from literally nowhere and sat down next to me. i, this scared-shitless trans bi kid at pride for the first time, very nervously told her she looked pretty and i told her my name and that i got lost and didn't feel like i should be at pride and she held my hand and said "oh, honey, everybody deserves to be here, especially you. pride is for everybody who's ever gotten lost, who's been scared of who they are or where they are. you think we never been scared before? pride's for you, honey, because you're scared. you don't have to be proud right now, but you're gonna be one day, honey, i'm sure of it."
i found my group soon after that and i never saw that queen again but to this day i am convinced i met an angel.
so yeah. pride is for you. pride is for all of us.
Not lesbians this time but equally funny…
Parent: “Just to make sure I didn’t– I didn’t mishear what you said, what did you say I look like?”
Child: “A douche in that hat.”
Parent: [holding back laughter] “I– you said I look like a douche in this hat?”
Child: “Uh-huh.”
Parent: “A– a douche? You’re saying a douche?”
Child: “Yep.”
Parent: “Adley, what is a douche? What is– what are you talking about?”
Child: “It’s kind of– it’s– it’s kinda like a– a king, or something. He’s a king.”
Parent: “Like a king?”
Child: “Uh-huh.”
Parent: “You’re saying a king? A douche is like a king?”
Child: “Uh-huh.”
[long, bewildered silence]
Parent: “Do you mean a duke?”
Child: “Yep!”
Parent: “Okay. Thank you so much for the compliment, sweetie, um– but it is a duke. Look– look– look– look at me. A duke. Not a douche. Alright?”
Child: “A douche?”
Parent: [laughing] “No, no, not a douche. A duke!”
What i love about these videos, what is right and good about these videos, is that it shares this kid being cute AF - but at NO POINT is the child on screen. At no point is that baby’s face exposed to the internet. Dad wants to share this experience but he only shares HIS piece of the experience because his kid is not old enough to consent to that kind of exposure and bless him, its the right thing to do.
you’re doing god’s work here
I’m crying like a baby
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s credits have almost exclusively Japanese people in them; but one name sticks out:
By searching around, people have found this forum post from 2007:

Like the guy said. Sometimes the things you need to do to heal might feel silly, but don’t let that stop you.
Heal yourself.
This is so beautiful and affirming.
One very important note on the immense value of the Internet Archive that I haven't seen mentioned yet:
It crawls major newspapers like the New York Times multiple times per day.
For anything other than one of those scrolling updates breaking news pages, you can access it from the Archive usually within an hour or two of it being published. No paywall. You want international news? You got it. Opinion? That too. Recipes? It's all here. Page not yet archived? There's a button for that and now you got it.
There are various paywall-evading extensions and tricks out there, but they don't always work. This does.
Go forth and read the newspaper.

Barnes and Noble booksellers are working on forming a union as well!
Their flagship store and New York has unionized along with 3-4 other stores! This is happening! People are tired of being seen as dollar signs and being made to work just to get to work more, to survive instead of thrive. Keep it UP.
Yellowstone National Park just voted to unionize General Schedule employees (most park rangers, folks in admin, resource management). It's not in the news but I'm pretty excited about it.
man sometimes i really want to get back into welding but then i remember that the guys from the first course i took won’t be there and change my mind
comprehensive list of things that happened to me in my welding course with The Guys:
- was the only one to get an A the first grading period. had to stop them from putting me on their shoulders
- became the official classroom mascot on account of i was the only girl. this meant i was an integral stop on any and all workshop tours. was referred to as “Our Lady Helena” on these occasions
- almost set myself on fire once bc my prof stood behind me watching me try a skill he’d just demonstrated and he shouted very suddenly very loudly. restarted my heart and asked WTF WAS THAT FOR JOHN and he called me a “goddamn wonder”. i almost got third degree burned over a compliment
- mentioned offhand ONE TIME that swords were cool. also mentioned my birthday offhand ONE TIME. one of The Guys remembered both instances and also happened to find a sword in a dumpster so he gave it to me for my birthday
- came in fifth in an arm wrestling competition
- french braided my hair in class bc i didn’t have time to do it beforehand. ended up with an audience of like 5+ guys trying to figure out how tf i was doing it
- told The Guys my college friends call me barbie. Mistake. suddenly had all 12 of them calling me Barbarian
- had some down time and made a silly little sculpture with some scraps. The Guys were endlessly intrigued by this and demanded to see some of my art school stuff. had a small crowd around my phone cheering loudly every time i swiped to a new picture
- accidentally mentioned the cafe i worked at. Mistake. several days later all 12 of them came in to bother me
- offered someone a haircut. Mistake. had to retract the offer bc suddenly Everyone wanted a haircut and it would Not Be Fair if i only did one
