The fact that you can’t raise taxes on billionaires even slightly without them pouring money into fascist political movements is, of itself, evidence that billionaires as a class shouldn’t be allowed to exist in the first place.
I’d just like to point out that every single thing that has happened in the 6 years since I created this post has only reinscribed its absolute moral correctness in my mind.
When I remember the toplock and bottomlock discourse... like okay I do understand why people were not willing to take us seriously. And plenty of things about tjlc itself were far fetched + unhealthy. But every 3-4 months or so I'll just take a moment to remember the show as it was and it's like. Damn I really can't believe they tried to play it like we were insane for thinking canon Johnlock was a possibility. Like we all watched the scene where Sherlock reimagines Mary in her wedding dress shooting him in the heart. And we were nuts for thinking that maybe just maybe they were going somewhere with that???? John Watson spends all of A Scandal in Belgravia unable to form meaningful romantic relationships because of Sherlock + is absolutely burning with jealousy at the thought Sherlock is forming a meaningful romantic relationship with Irene and it was so unbelievable for us to think that they were writing it that way with intentionality??? That was a fringe unhinged assumption to make? On Tumblr, of all places???? Like I can look back reflectively on 2014-Jan 2017 and recognize there was a lot to criticize about TJLC. But we were so normal for entertaining the premise that a queer man wouldn't queerbait us like that, you cannot convince me different.
you kind of do have to let multiple layers of meaning and metaphor coexist rather than claiming one is the true reading if you want to get fucking anything out of art
the way sherlock tosses a phone around in asib… he’s definitely playing with SOMEONE’S heart
they made BBC Irene Adler have that stuffy pin up curl hairstyle for so long solely bc she's Sherlock's lesbian mirror lol like if she wasn't then they would have let those locks flow downnnm. That one scene is so sexy and important to me
My point is that he's gay
Crowley's confession-
...was in 33 AD, yes? Or even earlier, honestly, as the below could have just been some bonus romance by then... Is that what we're doing here? 😜 When everyone says 'Crowley's confession', I don't think of 2.06. I think of the Golgotha scene.
In it, Aziraphale is expressing some jealousy over Crowley's reputation as Asmodeus, the Demonic Prince of Lust. By telling Aziraphale what her true name is now, Crowley is saying how much she's Aziraphale's. The name, as we saw in S2, only means something to the two of them and refers to an important moment between them. Crowley saying their name in response to Aziraphale's query here is saying no, I'm yours. You all are missing out on the top shelf smolder of the passion of the Crowley at The Passion of The Christ if you think Crowley is just getting around to telling Aziraphale how he feels in 2.06.
The flashbacks weren't just put here to twinkle, ya know?
Here’s my take on the whole audio books vs. reading:
Oral tradition of storytelling predates written ones by millennias, and honestly, which one you like is just a personal preference.
The actual difference is
- when listening, you have no idea how to write characters’ names
- when reading, you have no idea how to pronounce characters’ names
hope this helps!
Broke (2016): BBC Sherlock is a phenomenal piece of media and anything that seems like a flaw just hasn't been fully explored yet
Woke (2020): BBC Sherlock is an incredibly flawed series run by an egotistical writer, it never deserved the hype and is actively bad on so many fronts (especially representation)
Bespoke (2024): BBC Sherlock is flawed and bogged down by increasingly poor writing, which many fans refused to see while it was airing, leading to hugely misplaced expectations (particularly for the final series), AND it has the seeds of some compelling characterizations and portrayals, some genuinely solid performances, and touches--albeit imperfectly--on complexities that are still being discussed today (particularly as it relates to the relationship between Sherlock and John). The huge cultural impact of the show has created a massive pendulum effect in its public perception, leading to most people today remembering a caricature of the show (whether positive or negative) rather than appreciating its nuanced merits and failings...that being said Season 4 sucked
One thought - maybe obvious, but alas not for all scriptwriters. About "strong female characters".
I have a feeling that many approach the topic of creating such characters quite superficially.
So, for me, a "strong female character" is not the one who dominates everything that moves (she can, but this is not what makes her strong for me), not the one who fights coolly (this is possible, but not essential) and not the one who steadfastly withstands the blows of fate.
For me, the fundamental quality of a strong female character is the presence of her own life goal (going beyond meeting other people's expectations and desires) and the will and courage to make her own independent choice on the way to this goal.
A strong female character can be physically weak, have fears, emotional vulnerability. But she must have some power, first of all, not over other characters, but over the plot of the story itself.
She must be felt as a character who has her own voice of choice in the direction of the author's plot development.
I just started BBC Sherlock and, r u kidding me?? Like, they are SO clearly canon. I only watched the first season and my mind was already working almost as fast as Sherlock's thinking about how many fanfics can be done with those two (it was effortless work I'm telling you).
John 'I was a military doctor at war but I very much know how to use a gun, you breathe near him once, and you'll get perfectly acquainted with the bullet' Watson and Sherlock 'I never cared about anyone's wellbeing but yours, god have mercy with the people that hurt you because I won't' Holmes in a fic where Sherlock is being threatened with some kind of weapon or something and John is the one that ends up being hurt.
John saying out loud his usual 'amazing' 'that was incredible' 'fantastic' to Sherlock and him being like 'I swear to god if you say that again one more time I won't be able to control myself' before he kisses him
Them kissing for the first time and John asking Sherlock to try and make observations and deductions about the apartment or himself and Sherlock starting to gradually find it more and more complicated until he has nothing to say cause John is 'kissing him senseless' LITERALLY
I. NEED. FICS. FOR. THESE. TWO. ASAP. I don't think I'll live in peace otherwise 😭
P.D. BBC, my friend, honestly, ANOTHER masterpiece?? At this point just write me my life, hand me the script and I'll happily follow (make the queer part canon tho :))
good omens mentioned🗣
"People get really affected by it"
Somehow still an understatement.
have we considered the possibility of an unrequited love affair with a man with the same initials? JHW / John Hamish Watson could be some guy James Harry Willington who he knew at school and never got over 👀 anyways pls go back to your serious work I''ll just be here. imagining stuff
While we're considering situations Doyle may or may not have gotten himself into at school, can we also consider this part of The Firm of Girdlestone where two men have secret knocks to signal to one another that they are ready for "boxing practice?"
"Oh, my darling, knock three times On the ceiling if you want me Twice on the pipe If the answer is no"
- Tony Orlando and Dawn.
For those not loving the Utah section, you just have to consider the absolutely bonkers fact that Dr. John H. Watson stops the story to go "So listen. There's this guy. His name is John, not me for the record, definitely a different John, anyway for some reason he just won't get married, like absolutely refuses to marry, would rather risk death than marry a woman actually even though it is expected of him by his society and the church. And also there's this other guy with the initials JH, also definitely not me, and he's an adventurer and charming storyteller back from a long campaign and meets this person and immediately falls head over heels and swears he will do anything to be with this person even though their marriage is forbidden by society and by the church, and if he can't be with the person he loves then his quest for vengeance is just and God sides with him, actually."
Starting Sherlock today guys when do they get freaky
Ahh there it is
