Ukraine Links

A lovely individual from the Ukraine has messaged me and asked to help spread some useful links for Ukraine aid.

  1. Fundraising for Humanitarian Assistance to Ukrainians
  2. Unicef Ukraine Emergency
  3. Humanitarian and Medical Aid to Ukraine

The person who messaged me said: "Now Ukraine has already liberated several regions from rashist troops: Kyiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, and recently Kharkov. My friends from Bucha come back home. Ukraine have some win. But it's very big tragedy for civilization country. Our economic in hell."

If you’d like to directly support Ukrainian artists and crafters right now, here’s a suggestion: get on Etsy, search for digital sewing, knitting, and needlework patterns, and filter your search to shops located in Ukraine.

I’m going to list shop names rather than linking directly, so this post won’t get filtered out of tumblr search results. Just add dot etsy dot com to see their shops.

I’ve seen a lot of posts going around that sort of…mock the idea that you, an individual person, can make any sort of difference by donating to Ukraine. And I find that sentiment really unhelpful. Look, I understand that those of us who don’t have a ton of money (myself included) probably feel like giving money to Ukraine won’t make as much of a difference as we’d like it to make (I wish I had thousands or millions of dollars to donate, but I don’t.) But every bit DOES help. And I feel like some people are being needlessly cynical right now. Obviously, you should do research on charities before giving to them. But that’s not what this post is about. It’s about the fact that some people are really saying, “Donating to Ukraine won’t solve anything/it won’t change anything.” But whether it will “solve” anything on a large scale is beside the point… People are being displaced, their homes are being bombed, their lives are completely in chaos. They need food, they need basic supplies, they need everything they can get. I saw a photo of a pile of boots that people in one neighborhood in the UK were donating to Ukraine. Sure, it was only about 30 pairs of boots, but every pair of those boots will go on somebody’s feet. That matters! Will donating money/supplies stop the war? No, of course not. But it WILL make a measurable difference in the lives of people who are suffering right now. And I know that not everybody is even in a position to donate right now. But please, please, stop saying that donations don’t achieve anything.  (Here are some charities recommended by NPR)

The EU has 450 million inhabitants. If a quarter of us gave 1 Euro each, that’s still over 100 million Euros. That money buys a lot of food and basic supplies. And only because the situation is bad now doesn’t mean it couldn’t get even worse if we stood by and shrugged our shoulders.

And more generally, caring is what makes us human. I’ve seen the same argument, that it doesn’t help, about protests. Sure, Putin won’t look at some “Stop Putin” protest signs in random foreign countries and go “I guess they have a point”. But peace and democracy and human values are things that need constant work, by everyone. We need to assure each other of our common values and that we are willing to stand up for them, and right now we also need to show our leaders that we are willing to support their decisions even if they will inconvenience us personally.

Apathy is one of our biggest enemies. A lot of atrocities, a lot of failures in democratic processes happen because too many people don’t care and look away until it is too late. Hell, it’s exactly what Putin speculated on, that the rest of the world wouldn’t care enough about Ukraine to make much of a fuss. We cannot undo what happened, but we should pretty damn well work on being better in the future.
