"what's bombadil even doing in lotr" he's a transition between the hobbit and lotr! as the hobbits leave the shire they're still having hobbit-like adventures, and the stakes get higher very gradually! bombadil is as ancient as the wide world they're about to face and as full of joy and cheer as the home they're heading out of! he's a big part of the bridge between the two books! fuck!

There are 2 things about Thorin that I think about constantly

1. The fact that he's nearsighted. I believe it's canon in the Tolkien universe that dwarves just can't see that good far away. But Thorin especially. In the book, Fili and Kili have good eyesight because theyre young. In the movie Thorin lost his way to Bilbo's house TWICE because he couldn't see the symbol on the door. This man is blind as fuck, give his man a prescription

2. The harp. The fucking harp dude. They should've kept the instruments in the movie. The music is what made Bilbo want to join them. Thorin playing the harp especially makes me feel things. Man is a rugged dwarf king, but he plays THE HARP??? An elegant gentle instrument that takes a light hand to play. We should've seen him play the harp in the film. Pleaseee

yeah, there shoulda been more music in the hobbit films. that's what makes it real, having these characters express their varied culture through their music.

Here is just "The Misty Mountains Cold"/The Song of the Lonely Mountain, from Chapter 16 of my webcomic adaptation of The Hobbit! I noticed I had never posted the song in isolation. You can find my full webcomic adaptation of the Hobbit on Tumblr here, Ao3 here, and Webtoon here. You can also support my art in general/see things early on Patreon here.

gorgeous. Deco, celtic, stained glass effects…

Crying shaking throwing up over the fact that the only reason the One Ring was destroyed in the end was because Bilbo spared Smeagol’s life out of mercy and pity and the goodness of his heart and that goodness saved everyone in Middle Earth and I know probably everyone already knows that and there’s a million posts like this but Tolkien just said love and kindness and mercy is the only way we are ever going to accomplish anything

I don't know if this was obvious to everyone else, but I just realised that one of the reasons why the Hobbit is so effective as a children's book is that while Bilbo is an adult, the skills that make him a hero are all those of a child.

By human standards he's child-sized, which makes him unobtrusive and light on his feet. He can slip by unnoticed where bigger people can't.

He's good at playing games, and even cheats (successfully!) in a way that - let's face it - is not so different to how children try to cheat at games. He's polite in a way that's fully comprehensible to children (rather than, say, being able to perform courtly manners). He's quick-witted, but the trick of keeping the trolls talking is also one that would be achievable for a child.

He doesn't have magic powers, he's not a great fighter, and he's not some kind of Chosen One. There's not much that he does that couldn't be done by a ten-year-old, but the story shows just how valuable all those skills and traits are. It's very empowering.

His other major skill is throwing rocks.

Round 1

This is my favorite book in all the world, though I have never read it.

-The Princess Bride, William Goldman

Over the open plain, beneath a starless sky as dark and thick as ink, a man walked alone along the highway from Marchiennes to Montsou, a straight paved road ten kilometres in length, intersecting the beetroot fields.

-Germinal, Emile Zola

In a hole in the ground lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet hole, filled with the rnds of worms and an oozy smell, nor yet a sandy, bare hole with nothing in it to sit down on or to eat: it was a hobbit hole, and that means comfort.

-The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien

aauugghh why these two against each other in round one!!! hard to choose. it came down to, which one would i be more likely to recognize if the book and author had been hidden behind a readmore. SIGH
