Global Peace Index, 2023

Map of the Global Peace Index (GPI)! In assessing peacefulness, the GPI investigates the extent to which countries are involved in ongoing domestic and international conflicts and seeks to evaluate the level of harmony or discord within a nation. Ten indicators broadly assess what might be described as safety and security in society. Their assertion is that low crime rates, minimal incidences of terrorist acts and violent demonstrations, harmonious relations with neighbouring countries, a stable political scene, and a small proportion of the population being internally displaced or refugees can be suggestive of peacefulness. This includes number/duration of international conflicts, number of deaths from internal and external conflicts, number/duration of role in external conflicts, relations with neighboring countries, level of perceived criminality in a country, number of refugees/displaced peoples are percentage of population, political instability, impact of terrorism, political turmoil, number of homicides per 100,000 people, level of violent crime, likelihood of violent demonstrations, incarceration rates, military expenditure as % of gdp, number of police per 100,000 people, volume of global weapon transport, military personnel per 100,000 people, financial contribution to UN peace keeping, nuclear and wmd capability, and ease of access to small arms are all factors that are taken into account when analyzing the world’s nations for the GPI.

Another Antarctica Map - but this is the best map of Antarctica currently available “BedMachine Antartica”, published on 12 Dec. 2019. With a new technique, the team was able to deduce the Denman trough reached 3.5 kilometers below sea level—the deepest point on land.

Since summer school ended, I'm gonna make longer posts like this rehashing what I've learned.

Cree Dialect Continuum Map

Or more accurately, the Cree-Naskapi-Montagnais dialect continuum map

A dialect continuum is considered a chain of languages with "blurry" borders of legibility, where the "rough" areas of languages aren't clear, and as such are grouped together as a continuum--forming a "chain" of speakers that can understand adjacent speakers, but often not speakers of the "dialect" opposite of them. An example is how an Eastern Montagnais speaker might be able to understand adjacent languages clearly, but not Plains Cree (and vice versa). The variability of languages is often concentrated near the urheimat or "point of origin" before a common ancestor language split.

To add, North America has a few dialect continuums of other families that are often legally at least considered as "languages" (such as Inuktitut or the various Dene clusters of the (Sub-)Arctic).

Yupik (an Inuyunangan language), as far as I know are several distinct languages but lumped into one language by the US government census; I don't think they'd count here.

ps. Ojibwe Dialect Continuum Map

including Algonquin, Oji-Cree, Odawa, and Saulteaux (which linguistically are considered Ojibwe)

excluding the sister-ish language Potawatomi.

Note that these boundaries shown on the map are often based around communities and nations, and may not be representative of the exact placement or variation of the dialects; as I've said, things get really blurry.
