Art stuff I’m working on at the moment:

  • a watercolour inspired by Tolkien’s translation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight for next year’s Beyond Bree Tolkien Calendar
  • a drawing inspired by the wonderful Johnlock fic Ravelling by @calaisreno
  • my first Dead Boy Detectives fanart (had to happen eventually ...): “Reading by lamplight”
  • another Fandom Trumps Hate piece, this time Tolkien-inspired and showing Celebrimbor in Eregion
  • and one more FTH-piece for @chriscalledmesweetie: a cover for their lovely fic Sleeping Irene (no sketch yet)
  • oh, and there’s a commission for a book cover, too
  • and if that weren’t enough, there are still plenty of ink and watercolour drawings to do for my Sherlock & London graphic novel ...

The summer holidays can’t come soon enough ...

Lineart of my second 2024 Fandom Trumps Hate piece: @thetimemoves bid on my services to create art for the fantastic Sherlock fic The Pillar upon Which England Rests by @discordantwords

In case you haven’t read the story, it’s a brilliant exploration of how Sherlock met Mrs Hudson and what exactly happened in Florida.

Just received a shiny 7-year-veteran Fandom Trumps Hate pin in the mail 😊

A big thank you to the mods! I will of course participate in this year’s FTH as well.

Khorazir does Fandom Trumps Hate

As in previous years, I’ll be offering BBC Sherlock and Tolkien inspired art (books only) in two auctions. If it’s possible again this year, I’ll also create artworks for the second highest bidders, meaning four people should get the chance to acquire some art from me.

The browsing period has started. Here’s the link to my two auctions:

For some reason, neither of my two auctions are listed in the fandoms I signed up for (Tolkien and BBC Sherlock). I hope this glitch can be fixed still, because like this, people browsing the fandom tags won’t see my offers. If you have any questions about what I will draw (and read beforehand if you’d like art based on a fic), please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Bidding is now open until 9th March. Do have a look at all the other fabulous offers, too.

Please don't break containment

Yes, we saw! Neil Gaiman posted about us!

That is going to make a LOT more people on Tumblr aware of the auction. The prospect of reading a wider swath of fandom is great, and we appreciate the good intentions in asking Mr. Gaiman to boost us.

However.

That's on Tumblr. People following Neil Gaiman on Tumblr. Which is going to be mostly fandom people to start with.

Please do not contact celebrities or media creators about FTH on Twitter/X or any other social media.

Why? Don't we want all the publicity we can get?

Well, within fandom spaces, yes. The problem is that if we get too much attention outside of fandom spaces, that's going to attract trolls. People who think it's hilarious that anyone writes fic in the first place, people who look at some of our listings for explicit content and pass judgment, possibly people who are bigoted and just look at the fact that we have so many people offering queer ships and pass judgment.

That could result in abuse of our system and harassment of our creators and mods.

So please, please. Keep your FTH love within fandom spaces. Yes, there are fandom communities on other social media - that's why we have Twitter and Bluesky accounts! But there are also comparatively more non-fandom communities in those spaces as well, and a tweet that gets a celebrity's attention can spread so, so quickly to people whose attention we'd rather not have.

We super appreciate Mr. Gaiman's support for the amazing non-profits we feature, who are doing great work! And thank you to the greater FTH community for caring so passionately about our causes.

But our main priority — yes, even more important to us than raising money for good causes — is connecting and supporting the folks who are already participating. That’s all of you who are already here, and the fandom friends whom you recruit. And when someone very famous starts boosting us, there is the real potential for the scope of the auction to expand well beyond that circle of care very quickly.

I'm going to throw a little gardening metaphor at this.

We want FTH to grow organically. You found us because you're in a fandom where someone reblogged their auction. You had a look. Maybe you bid on someone. Maybe you won. The next year you signed up to be a creator and made a post about your offer that another handful of people saw. And they came. And they stayed. And FTH grew.

We do want it to grow. We want to build community and get new fanworks into the world and support good causes. We want to be here for a long time.

But if we aren't careful in managing our growth —if we dump a vat of chemical fertilizer on the sapling that is FTH— we can burn it. We can make the growth fast, but weak, which encourages pests and disease.

Slower is better and more sustainable.

All love and respect to Mr Gaiman, but in this instance, he's a truckload of miracle-gro.

... which is not a thing I ever thought I'd be typing.

Anyone interested in some numbers?

Signups have been open for roughly 29 hours. In that time, 223 creators have signed up to offer 312 auctions in 88 listed fandoms, and 76 write-in fandoms.

And? 42 creators are willing to work in ANY fandom!

Our creators are once again tending to leave the choice for where to donate up to their bidders. Among those who selected specific nonprofits to support, the top spots went to:

77 Middle East Children's Alliance 65 Sherlock's Homes Foundation 54 Never Again Action 51 In Our Own Voice 49 National Network to End Domestic Violence 48 Civil Rights Education and Enforcement Center

We so far have 34 offers for fan labor, including 6 folks offering translation (in various combinations of English/French/German/Spanish/Vietnamese, and limited help in Russian)

Top of the rankings for listed fandoms:

41 K-Pop * 28 Good Omens 22 Red, White, & Royal Blue 18 Sherlock Holmes * 16 Marvel *

And over in the unlisted fandoms? The leaderboard looks like this …

5 Yu Yu Hakusho 3 Ace Attorney 3 Bungou Stray Dogs 3 Dragon Ball 3 For All Mankind 3 Realm of the Elderlings - Robin Hobb 3 The Goblin Emperor Series - Katherine Addison

... so far.

Stay tuned for a more in-depth dive into the listed and unlisted fandoms in a post coming soon to a screen near you!

And jsyk, I've had to revise this post 3 times during the drafting as new signups come in. It's a good problem to have :)
