Absolutely love it when fics have Holmes trying to play off an injury as less serious than it actually is, but let's be real - that man is dramatic. If he was a dog, he'd be the type to fake a paw injury for extra treats and attention but forget which foot he used.

tags from @skyriderwednesday (thank you because I was too lazy to do this.)

very good point from @amypihcs

“Oh, I have to stay in bed all day? I’m fine, Watson. You’re overreacting.”

vs.

“Watson, I stubbed my toe and it is absolutely necessary for you to allow me to hold your arm wherever we go for the next week.”

Thought about this again and I believe we deserve both. So consider: This changing through the years!

1881 Holmes who wants to be all aloof and ✨️mysterious✨️ (because he knows Watson loves a mystery so the best way to secure his interest is to be one) - not allowing Watson to check his injuries/withdrawing when he's not well, and only allowing Watson to intervene when he really really cannot manage alone.

Vs. Holmes a few years in who is absolutely sure of Watson's unwavering friendship and affection, and will just allow himself to whine about everything because he's a drama queen, and although he has 100% of Watson's attention anyway, he doesn't mind having 120.

I think of myself as a practical woman. I am proud to say that I have always been able to manage my household in the most efficient manner, purchasing only what is of good quality without requiring any unnecessary expenses. I have one possession, however, that is an exception to that rule. This is the story of how not only one but two of my tenants returned to Baker Street, and how I came to own one of London’s finest tea services as a result.

Mr Holmes returns. Dr Watson leaves. Mrs Hudson realises that London’s greatest detective might require a little assistance with winning the good doctor back.

Annie hesitated, nervously turning the apple in her hands, lowering her gaze. “I must tell you first,” she mumbled, “that I can’t pay your fee, Mr Holmes, b-but I can help in the garden, or –“

„Oh, but lost animal cases are always free of charge,” Holmes said casually, folding the newspaper and throwing it onto the floor next to his armchair. He is, as I have often stated, really a rather brilliant man.

After the Great War, Holmes and Watson are living a quiet life somewhere in Sussex. The days of great detective work lie in the past, but when a distressed young client asks them for help with finding her lost cat, Holmes and Watson have to solve a case that might turn out to be just beyond their limits.

I can't believe that happened. I am so very happy. I walked on stage and got to play Watson in front of a real audience and they all said what a nice job I did.

And Holmes told me I was the Perfect Watson. If it weren't for this sinus infection I'd be on cloud nine.

Maybe even with this sinus infection.

Good Omens Victorian headcanon I came up with today:

Sometime between 1881 and 1886 (several decades after leaving Crowley in St James Park and a few years before his instruction in the Gavotte), Aziraphale goes on a daytrip to Southsea in Portsmouth to intercede in the case of a young doctor whose practice is failing and stop him abandoning his calling.

After his mission goes unintentionally and dramatically (and probably hilariously) awry, Aziraphale uses too many miracles in front of the doctor, giving him reason to confide in his new friend, Alfred Wilks Drayson, the president of the Portsmouth Literary and Scientific Society, and, at his suggestion, begin a series of investigations into the possibility of psychic phenomena and a lifelong belief in the supernatural and spiritualism.

Aziraphale is however successful in his mission: Dr Arthur Conan Doyle sells his first Sherlock Holmes mystery, A Study In Scarlet, to Ward Lock &Co. in November 1886, having used his mysterious intervenor as the basis for the character of… Dr Watson.

Also: Part of their meeting involves Conan Doyle blushing my brining up a new genre he’s interested in writing, detective fiction, and Aziraphale immediately gushing about Edgar Allen Poe and ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue’ and how great the character of C. Auguste Dupin is, which annoys Conan Doyle so much that he adds a bit to A Study in Scarlet where Holmes describes Dupin as “a very inferior fellow”.

Also: the mission goes so wrong it’s the reason Aziraphale later gets a gun licence.

Additional Fun Fact: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s son, Adrian, later wrote an additional Sherlock Holmes mystery called ‘The Adventure of the Dark Angels’… 🤔

The Two Fixed Points in a Changing Age’?! That’s somehow a Good Omens fanfic title right there.

(No it’s not a real Strand Magazine I know, but that title was too good!)

This headcanon partially inspired by @gargoyle-doyle ‘s posts about Neil Gaiman’s family having had a grocers in Portsmouth - (which for some reason I can’t link because paste isn’t working) and because I used to live round the corner from where Conan Doyle’s practice had been, and up the road from the Portsmouth Museum which has half an entire floor dedicated to Conan Doyle and Holmes.

Here is the interior of 221b Baker Street rooms that was constructed inside the film studio for new Russian Sherlock Holmes series

The famous fire place in the sitting-room (as you may notice - they took the screen from the Livanov & Solomin series).

The Devil's Foot

This moment is so heartbreaking ... Holmes's sudden pained "Oh G-" and the way Watson immediately hurries to steady him, but Holmes refusing help and just breathing against the pain and taking a few steps away with this little thankful and embarrassed nod ... And Watson is so clearly worried and Holmes does his best to appear cheerful, but he needs to be alone because he can't say "Thank You" or "Help". I think this scene shows so well how complicated how their relationship really is because Holmes is a very proud man and he cannot appear vulnerable, not even in front of Watson. While Watson is clearly so worried and presumably just wants Holmes to go home and lie down.

I love how even after Holmes raises his 'nope' hand, Watson doesn't ever actually lose physical contact with him until Holmes gives him that little thankful smile, and Watson is presumably satisfied that he's not suffering anymore.

He'll obey Holmes' wishes, but not as far as leaving him totally alone while he's in pain.

And finally we see what HOLMES is up to!

Oh, a day in the country, how nice, what could EVER go wr-

-ONG, HOLMES WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO YOURSELF!! (watson told me this was more or less his and mrs hudson’s reaction.).

HOLMES. EXERCISE DOESN’T MEAN GETTING BEATEN UP! -sigh- you’re hopeless. NOW. Tell your husband what happened as her he fixes you again.

Ah very well, you meet mr woodley himself!

And of course, a straight left against the slogging ruffian. Very, very good, Mr Holmes. Maybe i watched the Granada episode too many times, but you can HEAR how proud he is of his straight left.

The Five Orange Pips

The opening to this one is just *chef's kiss*. It's classic Watson. Slipping in complements about Holmes every other word. Apologising that the story doesn't have a satisfying conclusion right out the gate. Rattling off a bunch of cases with fascinating names that he will never ever refer to ever again. Overwrought description of the weather.

"My wife was on a visit to her mother's,"

Watson you wrote an entire novel making it very clear that your wife does not have a mother, you adorable goose.
