Ajay’s Google image search

I’ve been spending a bit of time with The Six Thatchers this week, and one thing that caught my eye is these photos that come up when Ajay does his image search for Sherlock:

Some of these could come up as images in a search in the Sherlock universe, but I don’t think they all can. If we number the shots, starting at the top left, we get this pattern:

1 - 2 - 3 - 4

5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9

10 - 11 - 12 - 13

14 - 15 - 16 - 17

Images 3 and 14 are “Hat-man and Robin” press photos. Not sure about 16, but it probably belongs in this category.

Images 5 and 12 are from the Ricoletti press conference. 12 can’t be a screenshot, because we don’t see the ceiling from that angle, so these are presumably photographs taken by the press:

Images 8 and 15 appear to be from John and Mary’s wedding. I’ve added 7 here, although I think that’s a different suit.

Image 9 appears in only one place. You know, in case we needed reminding during The Six Thatchers that this blog post exists. Which, actually, we do. Really nice to get this confirmation, the more that I think about it.

That leaves images 1, 2, 4, 6, 10, 11, 13, and 17.

I’ve given up on image 1 (too washed out) and 6, 13, and 17 (too generic).

Image 10 has Sherlock showing rather a lot of neck, and although I first thought it must be from ASIB, it’s not. I can’t find it in Hounds, either:

Likewise, image 4 is a puzzle because of the colour scheme. It looks like either an office scene (Sherlock exiting an office, and a desk with a chair and monitor behind him) or like an outdoor scene (boxy vehicle behind him). I think that’s a sunlit cityscape in the background:

I’m not skilled enough to make a tumblr-sized version of this that represents the colours faithfully, but assuming that the object behind him is a desk, the only one I can find with legs that could match it is in the governor’s office in TFP:

Too much of a longshot, I think. Still, I wish we had a better version of that orangey image.

Images 2 and 11 are from the Bloody Guardsman case in TSOT. The most interesting of this set is 2. In TSOT, the transition from 221B to the barracks has interlaced shots of John and Sherlock walking left to right and the soldiers parading left to right and right to left, never sharing the same shot:

After Sherlock steals the bearskin hat, we get this:

But, Sherlock is being stealthy here. There’s not an opportunity for a laugh with the soldiers (and it would have been in poor taste after finding Bainbridge). So, how can the following photo (image 2) exist in the Sherlock universe?

In fact, this is not from the Sherlock universe at all. It’s one of Arwel’s production shots (see it on his website). This is a picture of Ben, not Sherlock.

Image 11 is similar; here’s the Ajay photo (L) next to Arwel’s shot (R ), which doesn’t exist in TSOT:

I’m guessing these are from the same shoot.

That was time-consuming, but I think worth it for an addition to S4′s Adventures in Breaking the Fourth Wall, and especially for the Six Thatchers case reference.

THEY  DIDN’T  DO  IT  …..

There are some characters in Sherlock BBC who, at one point, become suspects in a murder investigation. And in each of those cases it turns out in the end that someone else had been the perpetrator. 

Lady Louisa Carmichael

It is Mycroft Holmes who sends the lady with the otherworldly case to his brother. A remarkable woman, thinks John Watson and even Sherlock Holmes is impressed and defends the lady against the disparaging comment of her husband.

“She’s a highly intelligent woman of rare perception. Your wife can see worlds where no-one else can see anything of value.”

Nevertheless, Lady Carmichael soon becomes the main suspect in this case.

ok, i really have to get to bed, another early morning & busy day tomorrow, but i realized there is another possible "case" in this group, in TST. The discussion about six busts belonging to five people reminded me. I only watched it twice, so correct me if i'm wrong: the person who owned two busts was killed, by a person wearing black gloves, that's all we see of the killer, as they break open the busts. We are sort of led to think it's ajay, because he's the one searching for his memory stick, and he's the one sherlock interrupts at the other house, with the pool. BUT, he is never shown with gloves, while "mary" is, and when you think about it, if she suspected another AGRA memory stick was out there, she would want to get it herself. I know i read meta about this shortly after s4 aired, this isn't something i noticed in only two viewings! So it's another "not ajay, but "mary"/moriarty" case.

This is a summary of all the characters who are seen drinking alcohol (whisky, wine, port) alone. Either ….

  • drinking completely alone
  • most likely already drinking before another charachter appears
  • most likely continue drinking after another character leaves

All of the pics in this post are full screen shots. I haven’t enlarged any of them. The ‘big’ glasses are really that big. :)  More under the cut ….

@ebaeschnbliah: This is a very good post, and the list of lonely drinkers is quite impressive. If I understand correctly, there are basically two groups: 

  • the lonely drinkers who are sad, heartbroken, confused, traumatised - Sherlock, John, Ajay
  • the villains/manipulators: Mycroft, Magnussen, Norbury

Quite a nice symmetry, right?

in drinks code, whiskey="liquid courage", while various wines are associated with sentimental/romantic feelings. It seems fitting then that john drinks to gather the fortitude to watch sherlock's dvd, and to get through a difficult, lonely night; and that mycroft needs to quell his fears around moriarty and his brother's safety. The port wine in TAB seems more in keeping with the food=sentiment metaphor, part of his dangerous overindulgence in caring. It's interesting that ajay appears to be drinking out of a wine bottle, and norbury seems to drink wine alone too. So not to do with fear/courage, but maybe something like loneliness, the sadness of loss of a loved one? norbury is widowed, iirc, and perhaps ajay was especially close to another member of AGRA that "mary" betrayed to death.

Found a messy draft from after T6T aired (but before TLD). I was struck by how Ajay did the classic trope-y villain thing of reeling off his whole story, and how odd it seemed. No one really does that, right? 

I haven’t rewatched T6T so I don’t really know where to go with it… but it does ping in my brain as something that a person would write to describe what happened, vs a thing that would actually happen.

yeah, that "writer-y" thing of trying to put the exposition into dialog instead of just narration but it still comes out sounding like narration. I haven't re watched either, so... :)

5 busts or 6?

just clearing up some confusion im seeing re: busts in 6 thatchers. We see all 6

BUST NUMBER 1: HAVE SOME FUN

The first bust is the bust sherlock notices missing in the welsborough’s house. After leaving the house, he stops on the porch and examines the surroundings, checking for damage, and noting the disabled security camera. This bust was hastily smashed outside. 

~24 minutes, we see AJ’s fevered flashback, throwing this bust to the ground. BUST NUMBER 1 ACCOUNTED FOR. 

BUSTS  2 AND 3: LOOK AT MEEE

Just before this, we get another of AJ’s flashbacks:

This bust was smashed indoors. 

Lestrade comes to sherlock with this bust, bust number 2, and elaborates:

another TWO busts have been smashed. this gives us bust number 3. 

bust 1 - welsboroughs, and according to greg, bust 2 - hassan, and bust 3 - barnicot

BLOOD???

Sherlock notices something important about bust #2 - theres BLOOD on it. 

whoever broke this bust, cut themselves in the process. 

BUST 4 AND 5: MURDER THIS TIME??

Sherlock texts mary to join he, john, and toby on the case, and run around for a bit, before we get the next bust smashing:

TWO busts are smashed here. And the perpetrator is wearing… gloves? That’s strange. I thought they cut themselves while breaking these things. That’s a pretty distinct pattern though. But they don’t seem to quite FIT that well, do they….

distinct stitching, but clearly don’t fit well. curious.

Lestrade calls in from this crime scene the next day - MURDER THIS TIME, the soundtrack confirms.

to add to this, when sherlock finally meets up with AJ, lo and behold - 

no gloves, and a bandaged hand.

a few things:

1. AJ has successfully broken 3 other busts, all without injuring the home’s inhabitants. When presented an opportunity to get rid of sherlock, he backs off. Only when facing Mary does he nearly, NEARLY kill someone. AJ is not a murderer. 

2. AJ does not wear gloves. The mystery we are presented specifically tells us someone cut their hands on the busts, and AJ’s bandage confirms that. The 4th and 5th thatchers were not broken by AJ. 

3. The gloves we see are startlingly similar to Sherlock’s, but ill-fitting. Our only 2 options are John or Mary, but considering MURDER THIS TIME, and john avoids that kind of collateral damage, compared to his literally-a-psychopath wife, I think the answer here is obvious. Oh, right, and - 

Funny how right after sherlock put MARY - er, i mean toby - on the SCENT of this case, these two busts got hella smashed by someone who definitely isnt AJ……….. weird………….. so weird huh………..

BUST NUMBER 6: ME THUMBS GET PRICKS 

So the 6th bust is right where it should be, going down the list

the agra drive at the sandefords!! yay! 

conclusion: all 6 busts were shown, mary broke the 4th and 5th thatchers, someone else was pulling everyones strings here
