THE DYING DETECTIVE - part 3 - part 1 - part 2 - "to the last gasp he would always be the master" - there is at least one panel that made me laugh while drawing it so I hope it makes you laugh, too. It's the least I could do.

This will most likely be the last update for a few weeks - going to England on a trip (where Sherlock Holmes lives!!! omg!) - when I return it will be for a cozy early Christmas special, THE BLUE CARBUNCLE.

later that night

Lineart of my second 2024 Fandom Trumps Hate piece: @thetimemoves bid on my services to create art for the fantastic Sherlock fic The Pillar upon Which England Rests by @discordantwords

In case you haven’t read the story, it’s a brilliant exploration of how Sherlock met Mrs Hudson and what exactly happened in Florida.

May 10: "Choice"

What had that busybody old neighbor of hers called this? May December romance; that was it – with Martha decidedly in the winter category, grey tips and all. Oh, it certainly wasn’t anything actually romantic. At her age! And not with one, who’d scarcely looked out of short pants, the first time Martha had spotted him outside the club with that awful Jefferies person. She’d seen far too many, like him, given her husband’s line of business. She had nearly sighed and looked past this one, as well, except...

It was those eyes that had done it. Not stirring her to passion, goodness no. But that way he'd looked through her skin, all young and ancient, and saw the self she'd hidden under bright scarves and foundation; thick enough to hide the darkest bruise.

William, he'd called himself. Too skinny. That had been her first thought followed by “too young”... to be on his own and sleeping rough and buying drugs from those terrible dealers, who hadn't even the decency to offer clean needles, much less clean product. She'd, quite quickly, made the choice that he couldn't stay there and had arranged to provide a room above the club. It wasn't very quiet, sadly, but it was clean, off the street, and relatively safe. Little chance of harassment, from dangerous types, with David and Brass standing watch outside the doors below.

And maybe... maybe it was that posh voice... reminding her so much of the home that she hadn't seen in sixteen years.

also I'm a terrible liar with tears streaking down my face

THE COPPER BEECHES part two (pt 1 here), the conclusion. According to Watson: "As to Miss Violet Hunter, my friend Holmes, rather to my disappointment, manifested no further interest in her when once she had ceased to be the centre of one of his problems, and she is now the head of a private school at Walsall, where I believe that she has met with considerable success."

I think of myself as a practical woman. I am proud to say that I have always been able to manage my household in the most efficient manner, purchasing only what is of good quality without requiring any unnecessary expenses. I have one possession, however, that is an exception to that rule. This is the story of how not only one but two of my tenants returned to Baker Street, and how I came to own one of London’s finest tea services as a result.

Mr Holmes returns. Dr Watson leaves. Mrs Hudson realises that London’s greatest detective might require a little assistance with winning the good doctor back.

An Apology.... regarding Storeys

I should know better than to post something in the middle of the night and not check it. I confused a lot of readers royally by mixing my US and UK versions of Baker Street. To set the record straight, here it is corrected!!!

So, Baker Street is a five-storey building even though one of those is a basement level (that's 221c). The 221b door opens to the first floor ground floor; the living room, kitchen, bathroom and Sherlock's bedroom are on the second first floor and John's is on the second floor above, one assumes (although this begs the question of where it is because the building in the broadcast series has a third second and a fourth third floor, both of which have large rooms at the front of the house, which most fic writers don't want; they continually refer to John's room as being smaller than the living room)

So, please accept my apologies for the confusion, especially @geometry4, @andromeda4004, and @kabubsmagga.

Mrs Hudson’s flat, 221a, was on the ground floor. The boys were her only tenants in both the series and the original books. Mycroft must have made up the difference with the rent?

Another popular theory has Mrs Hudson occupying additional rooms on the third floor (i.e. above John's bedroom), at least a bedroom for herself, seeing how most of the ground floor would be taken up by Speedy’s, so Mrs Hudson would literally be sleeping in the coal shed if she restricted herself to the ground floor. I personally find it easy to picture Speedy’s occupying most of the area below Sherlock & John's sitting room and kitchen (minus the downstairs front door/hallway, obviously) while Mrs Hudson's kitchen is in the extension of the ground floor (i. e. below Sherlock's bedroom & adjacent bathroom). If you don’t want to picture too much empty space on the upper floors, you can also assume that the extension only exists on the ground and first floor (UK terminology!), not on the second and third. (Stranger alterations have been made to 19th century townhouses in London and elsewhere in the UK.) Although I believe the original North Gower St property's extension does extend (d'uh) to all three main floors.

i like that theory, i was surprised when we were first shown mrs hudson's kitchen behind speedy's. i had expected speedy's to use the whole ground floor, big front room for the customer area, and smaller back rooms for the kitchen/storage and sandwich counter. no way is there more room back there! if she wants a bedroom, sitting room, bathroom, maybe a guest room or heck, a place for winter clothes, she's got to be using the upper floors.

doylist thought, her kitchen is through that door because then they only had to build a small extension off the main set, and still not go up the next flight of stairs. and it had to be her kitchen so they could have that little gag with sherlock helping himself to her fridge. incidentally also denying us any glimpse of john's room.

Also originally in ACD, Mrs Hudson is always downstairs, opening the front door and announcing visitors, bringing the tea or meals up to our boys' rooms etc… Back in 1895, literally the only kitchen in the whole house would have been located at the back of the ground floor or even in the basement.

So while the BBC Mrs Hudson of course doesn’t technically do all the housekeeping any more, she still occasionally brings up food or lets in Sherlock & John's visitors… which would have been very odd if she’d done it from her 2nd or 3rd floor flat. So my two cents are on that being the true reason for the ground floor kitchen (possibly together with keeping the indoor set technically simple). In most Sherlock Holmes aficionados' minds, Mrs Hudson comes up to do things, not down, period. Anything else would just have felt like an affront to the laws of nature, even in a modern adaptation. Like defying gravity, literally.

excellent points!

One of my most beloved moments; John all protective of and worried for Mrs H, who is lapping it up. In comes Sherlock, obviously feeling very at home in Mrs Hudson’s flat, opening up her fridge and helping himself without asking, knowing well he is allowed. Sherlock knowing exactly how Mrs H handled herself, and why she was presenting so vulnerable. Her first instinct was to help and protect Sherlock, she was never afraid of the men. And John, sitting there in their comfortable presence, feeling a nice warmth inside his chest watching Sherlock hug her, witnessing their obvious affection, and confirming what he already knew. Sherlock might be a madman, but he is no psychopath, and his heart is alive and well, right there, where it should be. John’s little smile at the end of this scene says it all. (How can I not miss them?)

After being invalided home from Afghanistan, John takes up baking to keep busy when his therapist suggests that he find a hobby and blog about it.  He’s completely gobsmacked when he is accepted onto the show.

Sherlock takes up baking to keep his mind off the drugs (so many white powders!) Lestrade submits his name for the show and Sherlock is completely nonplussed when he is accepted, but why not, he’s bored.

Sparks fly immediately when the boys meet.

Mrs. Hudson wins the final Bake-off, but everyone’s okay with that because everybody likes her.  During the final celebration, she lets the boys know that there’s an empty flat in her building (upstairs from Speedy’s Bakery) They never do need that second bedroom, and they bake and solve crimes and live happily ever after.

And if they ever get too full of themselves, Mrs. Hudson bakes them a cake and serves it on her trophy cake platter, just to remind them who came in first.
